[00:44] My Dolphin file manager keeps freezing when I go into specific directories for some reason. It has been happening for a while and I think it sometimes switches which ones freeze it. I am running version 4:23.08.5 but I noticed that the Dolphin page says there have been many more updates and yet I can not seem to update to them. I am running Kubuntu [00:44] 24.04.1 LTS [00:45] I have tried sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade, but it says I am up to date [00:45] The Discover software has an Ubuntu and Snap install option but they both show the latest being 23.08.4 [00:52] running sudo apt install dolphin responds with dolphin is already the newest version (4:23.08.5-0ubuntu4). [01:05] It is looking like each version is tied to an OS version? But is there a more modern KDE version? [01:05] Kubuntu* [01:51] !latest | JustDoom [01:51] JustDoom: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. Post-release updates are only considered if they are fixes for security vulnerabilities, high impact bug fixes, or unintrusive bug fixes with substantial benefit. See also !backports, !sru, and !ppa. [01:51] !ppa [01:51] A Personal Package Archive (PPA) can provide alternate software not normally available in the offical Ubuntu repositories - Looking for a PPA? See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas - WARNING: PPAs are unsupported third-party packages, and you use them at your own risk. See also !addppa and !ppa-purge [01:52] yes, each version is tied to a Kubuntu release (when it comes to apt / .deb packages), not so for snaps [01:52] The snap was telling me 23.08.4 was also the latest though [01:53] snaps need to be packaged, too. if no one packages them then there won't be a newer version, there can be different release channels for snaps, as listed on snapcraft.io and in your software "store" application === zul is now known as wakkarto [01:55] Ah yeah, Candidate has one that is slightly newer. But still very outdated compared to the latest [01:56] Also why is it that 23.08.4 is tied to Kubuntu 24.04 then and not one that was released later? Because I keep having it freeze on me [02:02] Happens on multiple devices too [02:19] see what ubottu said about !latest [02:19] versions for a Kubuntu release are frozen by the time a release is being prepared, some weeks before release [02:20] then bug and security fixes are backported to this version for the lifetime of the release [02:20] this means things don't break druing the release, which provides a stable experience. this can be great to have. [02:23] there are somewhat rare exceptions to this approach, see !sru - and 'workarounds' such as !backports (which is a different thing than backported bugfixes) and !ppa 's (and sometimes third party apt repositories), and snaps. [02:23] bbl [02:27] !backports [02:27] If new updated packages are built for an application, they may go into Kubuntu Backports, which is one of the official Kubuntu PPAs. See https://community.kde.org/Kubuntu/PPAs for more information. [02:28] I guess that makes sense now [02:29] !sru [02:29] Stable Release Update information is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates [03:34] Hi I am install kubuntu 24 on my laptop with m820 GPU, device manager talls I use either nvidia driver 340 or nouveau.
