canurabus | hi all. I'm on a fairly new installation of Kubuntu. When I logged in today, I saw in the task bar that updates were available. Despite me not starting these updates or taking any action, Kubuntu went ahead and updated on its own -- now when I check Discovery I see that I am up to date. I also got several notices to restart my computer to complete | 00:57 |
canurabus | the updates, again without actually doing anything. 1) How can I disable automatic updates? In KDE System Settings > Software Update, Manually is already selected. 2) Being spammed with multiple restart notices post update has been happening for a long time. Is there a bug tracker for this? | 00:57 |
sarnold | try sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades -- my guess is the security updates were automatically installed by unattended-upgrades and I think it's got a debconf interface to do simple configuration changes | 00:59 |
canurabus | Thanks, I disabled the setting that pops up when running dpkg-reconfigure. Its a little unintuitive that there's an update indication from discovery if said updates are going to be installed automatically. I can't think of a better way to show it, but there is some strangeness there | 01:01 |
sarnold | the unattended-upgrades tool doesn't know about the gui thingy; the gui thingy may or may not know about the unattended-upgrades | 01:03 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> try | 01:48 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> sudo software-properties-qt | 01:48 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> By default on a fresh new installation, the system will automatically install security updates shortly after the kubuntu installation is complete, which can be adjusted via software-properties-qt. | 01:53 |

IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> I need some help giving my laptop access to all the folders in my phone using kde connect | 07:09 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <RikMills> The inability to do that is the fault of Google. They started rejecting any kdeconnect updates that allow the app to do that, so kdeconnect developers were forced to remove/restrict that ability in the app. (re @Omarvx211: I need some help giving my laptop access to all the folders in my phone using kde connect) | 07:30 |
skramer | Rather strange question: I noticed few days ago that on my laptop transparency in Konsole, etc. stopped working (GeForce 1650 Mobile). It says the system does not seem to support it. On the other hand, I have a much older system running a Quadro 770M where transparency is still working fine. So how do I get back transparency on the first system? | 07:46 |
skramer | Btw., transparrency used to work before | 07:46 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> Isn't there a way around currently? | 07:57 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> I really need this feature (re @RikMills: The inability to do that is the fault of Google. They started rejecting any kdeconnect updates that allow the app to do that, so kdeconnect developers were forced to remove/restrict that ability in the app.) | 07:57 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <RikMills> The version on f-droid may not have the restriction? (re @Omarvx211: Isn't there a way around currently? | 08:26 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <RikMills> I really need this feature) | 08:26 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <RikMills> Yes, looks like it works if installed from there | 08:28 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> F-droid? | 08:33 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> I was thinking if i could install it from uptodown or any other store will this work? (re @RikMills: The version on f-droid may not have the restriction?) | 08:33 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <RikMills> Those will likely just be the same as the play store apk. f-droid builds are done from KDE source and recognised by KDE devs | 08:35 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> Great I've just installed it from f-droid and i will try it out | 08:44 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Omarvx211> It's working now thank you so much | 08:50 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> Applications published on F-Droid require that the application code must be open source, built through the F-Droid platform and signed with the F-Droid certificate, and there is no requirement to prohibit the use of certain system permissions. | 08:52 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> Applications published on Google Play must comply with the restrictive requirements of the Google Play platform. | 08:52 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> Nvidia drivers version | 08:56 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> dpkg -l | grep nvidia (re @IrcsomeBot: <skramer> Rather strange question: I noticed few days ago that on my laptop transparency in Konsole, etc. stopped working (GeForce 1650 Mobile). It says the system does not seem to support it. On the other hand, I have a much older system running a Quadro 770M where transparency is still working fine. So how do I get back transparency on the first system?) | 08:56 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> If you have a GTX1650 Mobile on your laptop, theoretically your laptop should have dual gpu. | 08:58 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> In this case, the rendering of these common software should be done by the core gpu instead of discrete gpu. | 09:01 |
skramer | maoyum: It seems to be -535 | 09:05 |
skramer | And yes, it has dual GPU, Intel + Nvidia | 09:06 |
skramer | Still wondering why it does not work any longer since I had working transparency since few days ago | 09:10 |
skramer | *until few days ago* | 09:13 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> It may be a problem related to x11. Can you please tell us your kubuntu version? | 09:38 |
skramer | maoyum: It's 22.04: "6.5.0-28-generic #29~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Apr 4 14:39:20 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux" | 09:40 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> 1. The compositor might have crashed or been disabled. You can try restarting it: | 09:44 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> - Open a terminal and run: | 09:44 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> bash | 09:44 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> kwin_x11 --replace & | 09:44 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> | 09:44 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> 2. If you're using Kvantum for theming, make sure the transparency settings are correctly configured. Check if the theme is applied properly and that transparency is enabled in the Kvantum Manager. | 09:44 |
skramer | maoyum: It assues that "Compositing is not possible" | 09:49 |
skramer | No Kvantum or any other software installed | 09:50 |
skramer | maoyum: What really makes me wondering is the fact that it used to work before and only stopped working suddenly few days ago | 09:52 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> You may need to check dmesg or xorg log | 09:53 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> logs can solve many doubts | 09:54 |
skramer | It says dmesg is not allowed & evivarfs uses 100% of /sys/firmware/efi/efivarfs | 09:58 |
skramer | Never read something like this before | 09:58 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> https://apps.kde.org/zh-cn/ksystemlog/ | 09:59 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> try this | 09:59 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> https://apps.kde.org/ksystemlog/ | 10:00 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> try this | 10:00 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> Then how to use GPU m820 . (re @IrcsomeBot: <tomreyn> Akshatsoft: hmm, actually this states that your gpu no longer receives support, too https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4779/related/1) | 11:17 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> We use Linux because Linux support old hardware, so I think also new kubuntu 24 support older hardware | 11:41 |
skramer | How does that in any way answer my question?? | 11:45 |
BluesKaj | Hi all | 11:47 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> Hi (re @IrcsomeBot: <BluesKaj> Hi all) | 11:47 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> I also want anyhow GPU work (re @IrcsomeBot: <skramer> How does that in any way answer my question??) | 11:48 |
skramer | Akshatsoft: Do you have any idea how to fix that issue | 11:49 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> I am asking same question as you asked my GPU is M820 not working in kubuntu 24. I am not able to use aero themes glassey effects (re @IrcsomeBot: <skramer> Akshatsoft: Do you have any idea how to fix that issue) | 11:51 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> 820m not m820 | 11:52 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> There is no gpu called m820 | 11:53 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> GeForce 820M is actually based on the GF117B | 11:57 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> So | 11:57 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> It can only use nvidia-390 driver | 11:58 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> This driver is currently unsupported | 12:00 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> Kubuntu 24 not support (re @maoyum: It can only use nvidia-390 driver) | 12:00 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> Then what we do I need solution to see my GPU in action (re @maoyum: This driver is currently unsupported) | 12:00 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> Anyhow | 12:01 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> dmesg | grep -i nvidia | 12:03 |
skramer | So how to finally fix that transparency issue for the GeForce 1650 Mobile? | 12:04 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> https://irc-attachments.kde.org/bc2e7cbc/file_78609.jpg | 12:06 |
skramer | maoyum: There is no error log, it just stopped working without any logs... :-/ | 12:10 |
skramer | maoyum: At least, I do not know where to look for the log while I am using Linux since '94 and never exerienced such issue before... | 12:11 |
tomreyn | Akshatsoft: you chose to acquire a laptop which comes with nvidia hardware. nvidia has not released open source drivers or documentation for their hardware (not until recently, anyways, and that only works with their latest hardware), so no one other than them can write and maintain proper drivers. and they decided to stop supporting their proprietary drivers for this hardware. that means it can no longer be supported. | 12:22 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> I don't think it has anything to do with NVIDIA, because by default the laptop uses the core graphics card to render these common applications. He just deliberately emphasized NVIDIA, but his laptop actually has dual graphics cards. | 12:24 |
skramer | Yes, it has dual graphics & I just don't know why transparency is not working any longer | 12:26 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> I know what I have, just I want solution so my GPU starts working (re @IrcsomeBot: <tomreyn> Akshatsoft: you chose to acquire a laptop which comes with nvidia hardware. nvidia has not released open source drivers or documentation for their hardware (not until recently, anyways, and that only works with their latest hardware), so no one other than them can write and maintain proper drivers. and they decided to stop supporting their proprie | 12:40 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <Akshatsoft> I think new kernel not support 820m because novenau driver also not support 820m | 12:43 |
IrcsomeBot_ | <maoyum> Why not use 22.04? It provides 10 years of security updates. | 12:51 |

IrcsomeBot | <maoyum> I will work on it | 17:15 |
IrcsomeBot | <maoyum> Please type this in your terminal | 17:16 |
IrcsomeBot | <maoyum> sudo ubuntu-drivers list (re @Akshatsoft: 22 also use new kernel which not support 820m) | 17:16 |
IrcsomeBot | <maoyum> If nothing goes wrong, I was able to get this card working on kubuntu 22.04, but nothing on 24.04. | 17:20 |
=== lutz is now known as outa | ||
tomreyn | Akshatsoft: LTS releases support at least two kernel versions: GA and HWE: https://gist.github.com/tomreyn/8d7675840d7bc7389b32e4d8887ca449 | 22:50 |
tomreyn | Akshatsoft: i.e. you should be able to use an older kernel on 22.04 than the lowest that is available (and supported) on 24.04. | 22:51 |
tomreyn | and that may work with the 470 or 390 series proprietary driver | 22:51 |
tomreyn | other than that you may also have in integrated intel graphics chipset, which you could use instead of the nvidia one. | 22:52 |
tomreyn | it would probably be slower, but still faster than the vesa fallback graphics driver | 22:53 |
tomreyn | or you could do what nvidia wants you to do: buy new hardware (with hardware components from whom you think best supports you) | 22:54 |
eruditehermit | hi, I just bound an extra mouse button to something using the mouse settings. There doesn't seem to be an option to get rid of extra mouse button bindings in 6.1.5. Is there some config file I can change to reset the behaviour? | 23:43 |
eruditehermit | ah hitting defaults got rid of all the bindings but it only works sometimes. It's a bit buggy and you can't remove a single binding without resetting all of them. | 23:45 |
