Bashing-omeelstrebor: Now deb822-sources - https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/spec-apt-deb822-sources-by-default/29333 - does this link help ?00:17
ravagealso the parser of the GUI seems to be very picky00:18
ravagei never used that before. most 3rd party repos use the command line to add a repo00:18
eelstreborBashing-om, yep, that info helped - i just need a faster way to add the repository without having to manually add it03:12
Bashing-omeelstrebor: Got me there - to this time I have not messed about with deb822.03:20

wuzamarineIs there ANY compatible virtualizarion software out there for Ubuntu that isn't completely broken/crash the VPS every 10 min with absolutely zero log record? Do not say VMWare or Virtualbox.05:43
Guest6024i miss linux mint05:43

Please give more detailed information; for example, we might need errors, steps, relevant configuration files, Ubuntu version, and hardware information. Use a !pastebin to avoid flooding the channel.05:44
wuzamarinetoddc do you know what a crash is?05:45
wuzamarineO already said that the stupid developers at VMWare and Virtualbox can't code verbos logging05:46

toddcwhat software have you tried? logs? ect  I assume a ubuntu host?   virtualbox qemu many many other options that all work well05:46
wuzamarinetoddc do they not crash and have verbos logging? If not, I'm not interested. Sorry.05:47
toddcI am currently on 22.04 host and virtualbox 24.04.105:47
PheralSparkythis page makes no sense https://github.com/linuxwacom/xf86-input-wacom/wiki/Configuring-X05:48
PheralSparkydoes it even apply to ubuntu?05:48
wuzamarineI have 3 24.04 boxes (freshly reinstalled for this) that are ALL doing the exact same crashing. Dell compters also05:48
toddcwuzamarine: I have 7 ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 hosts with both 22.04 and 24.04 guests 4 are dell hosts are using the ubuntu repo version of virtualbox or the repo from virtualbox its self?05:51
wuzamarinetoddc you are not me not do you have my computers05:51
wuzamarineEither Ubuntu is completely jacked or just about every virtualization app out there is.05:52
toddcwhat version of virtualbox? is the host or the guest crashing?   asking for details   that I can verify test or reproduce on working computers05:53
wuzamarineFresh apt install. It's long deleted now.05:53
wuzamarineWhat ever the currect/stable is05:53
wuzamarinetoddc both host and VM lock completely. A hard reboot is the only solution05:54
wuzamarinea crash05:55
wuzamarineWindows is a lot more stable than this garbage. Bill Gates is getting really close to earning a return customer. ANYTHING is better than this.05:59

g80hello all, i'm a linux noob. i recently installed ubuntu and have a question about software. Can snap & flatpak coexist or is it one or the other?10:50
g80can ihave flathub and snap together in the software app?11:01
tomreyng80: i think you can install gnome-software and its plugins for snap snf flatpak, which would provide you with a single application to manage both. The default software store is, however, Canonicals' snap-store, and I don't think it supports flatpak. Other than that, generally speaking, I'm not aware of why you should not be able to have both snaps and flatpaks side by side with apt/debs.11:19
g80on linux mint, the software store there gives you options of whther you want to install system software or flatpak. I dont see the same option on Ubuntu. Is there a way to enable that?11:23
lotuspsychjeg80: mint has its own built packages11:26
g80ok, so that kind of display of choices is not possible in ubuntu software store app?11:28
g80i ran a terminal command to install flatpak, now i only see flatpak option in software store. Snap seems to have disappeared or replaced by flatpak11:29
lotuspsychjeg80: the software managers for ubuntu, also differ for different ubuntu releases, wich ubuntu release are you asking for?11:30
g80ubuntu cinnamon11:30
loloklast i tried ubuntu software store it couldnt update itself wihout manual intervention; i kinda hate to say it, but yeah especially if youre using cinnamon anyway definitely consider mint11:31
lotuspsychjeg80: thats the flavour, wich release(number) ?11:31
g80the latest version 24 i think11:32
g80how do i find out what version i have?11:32
lotuspsychjeg80: lsb_release -a11:32

g80Lotus, i have flatpak installed but i think its replaced snap11:37
g80is flatpak faster than snap on ubuntu?11:37
lotuspsychjedont think thats the case g80 , as tomreyn stated they surely can co-exist on a system11:37
g80lotus, i guess my question is that, i dont see the snap option for download when i'm searching for apps on the software store11:38
g80are there alteratives to the default software store on ubuntu?11:40

bizmatetomreyn, intel i915 ARC compatibility is still an issue as i described here ... https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2500132 I just tried to boot again without the xe options. I feel this should be at list in a known issues list for future drivers updates on kernel or somewhere else. Any suggestions?11:54
tomreynbizmate: i'd say the 'list of known issues' is also known as "launchpad" or the various kernel bug reporting venues11:57
tomreyni don't think i realized last time we talked that you have a dedicated Arc GPU, nor that those now exist for laptops11:58
bizmatetomreyn, it is built in, anyhow where can "launchpad" be accessed? Is it maintained in a git repo? https://git.kernel.org/ this is a strange git place. I cannot quite understand what is what12:00
ravage!bug | bizmate12:01
ubottubizmate: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its official !flavors, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.12:01
ravagefor a bug in the kernel that is "ubuntu-bug linux"12:01
tomreynlaunchpad.net is Canonicals (maker of Ubuntu) source code hosting, management, building and bug tracking platform. but instead of visiting this site, better read what ubottu said.12:02
ravagebut i dont think missing hardware support counts as a bug if the upstream kernel does not support it12:02
tomreynbizmate: are you the same person as "gebbione" on ubuntuforums.org?12:04
bizmatetomreyn, yep12:05
bizmateravage, i need to double check but as far as I know there is no option to add an extra set of drivers for ARC 915 same as Nvidia and currently a lot of UX related features are showing problems. The screen flickers when i interact with the desktop items12:07
ravagesounds like a problem Intel has to solve then?12:09
lotuspsychjebizmate: wich ubuntu release/kernel version are you on?12:14
bizmateI am not sure who owns this but it makes ubuntu on these machines difficult, in some posts it shows HWE might help  but latest ubuntu does not seem to have HWE -> https://community.intel.com/t5/Graphics/Intel-Arc-drivers-in-Ubuntu-help/m-p/159086112:14
bizmatehttps://ubuntu.com/kernel/lifecycle HWE maybe is not needed on latest ubuntu. I am on 24.04.112:15

PeGaSuShey folks. I want to upgrade my machine but I'm planning on make a fresh install to "clean up" the system. but I'd like to backup my *entire* system  to an external disk in case I don't like 24.04. which tool do you advise?12:18
lotuspsychje!backup | PeGaSuS12:19
ubottuPeGaSuS: There are many ways to back your system up. Here's a few: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DuplicityBackupHowto , https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HomeUserBackup , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MondoMindi - See also !sbackup, !borg, and !cloning12:19

ubottuborg is a fast backup tool with incremental backups: https://www.borgbackup.org/ (Ubuntu packages: borgbackup, borgbackup-doc, and borgmatic)12:20
ravageFor the entire system try clonezilla12:20
PeGaSuScan't. local disk is 1Tb, target disk is 500Gb12:21
lotuspsychjebizmate: if your graphics dont work on 24.04, try filing a new !bug as ravage already adviced12:21
bizmatelotuspsychje, I thought he suggested it was an intel problem but i ll try a new bug and point to my forum post12:23
lotuspsychjebizmate: feel free to share the bug ID here aswell after you created it12:24
tomreynbizmate: generally, new hardware should usually be supported (by means of developing suitable linux drivers) by the manufacturer. whether or not this is already the case for Meteor Lake-P (Intel Arc on Laptops), and if so, which kernel version + mesa + dri (the open source graphics stack) introduces full support for it would be relevant to know, since then you can know which kernel (and mesa) version you need to be running at least to get it to12:34
tomreynwork.12:34
tomreynbizmate: can you post   lspci -nnvs 0000:00:02.012:38
tomreynto a pastebin or termbin.com12:38
bizmatetomreyn, https://termbin.com/7eic12:56
tomreynokay, so there is the xe driver which is separate from i915 and your system is using it.12:56
bizmateit is indeed by means of forcing it with the kernel options as described in the post, someone suggested here and it is much better but it is not stable12:58
bizmatethese are the options chained in the boot sequence xe.force_probe=7d55 i915.force_probe=!7d5513:00
mio1969ciao !13:00
tomreynbizmate: https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci%3A8086-7d55-1043-1a63 lists other users of computers with this very intel gpu13:01
tomreynit would seem that support is still limited. but i think you should file a bug report, and see whether you can get it to work properly in text mode, yet.13:02
tomreynthe kernel cmdline you're using tells the i915 driver not to claim this piece of hardware, and tells the xe driver to do so. this makes sense if you want to ensure the xe driver handles this hardware.13:03
bizmate do you mean a shell by text mode?13:03
tomreyni mean a tty13:04
bizmatecommand line works, i am actually running gnome but with problems13:05
bizmatethe ux flickers most times and software like cairo-dock wont start ... anyhow i ll try to understand how to provide a bug report and post it. Thank you13:06
tomreynif your screen turns black this is not caused by iwlwifi, whic is the intel wireless driver, which should have nothing to do with graphics13:07
bizmateindeed I assumed so but the kernel output does not provide any further info when it gets stuck13:07
tomreyni think i previously pointed you to an arch linux documentation on options you can apply to the i915 driver to potentially work around flickering13:08
bizmatei even tried disabling wifi and bluetooth and the messages disappear but it is stuck with blackscreen unless i use xe13:08
tomreyni imagine using the xe driver may actually be necessary with this hardware13:09
bizmatetomreyn, would you think this is an XE specific problem then ? would I still report it in launchpad or somewhere else?13:15
bizmateI hope this is fine https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/208163614:38

myrtiHi, I'm having some issues with DNS since I upgraded to 24.04. At first I had absolutely no internet. Then realized I had dnsmasq and systemd-resolved running parallel. Read I should add "DNSStubListener=no" to the /etc/systemd/resolved.conf which I did. After that it (sometimes work). Now I still have the issues that on (most, amybe not all) reboots, I have no internet. I will gain access to the internet if I do a systemctl stop20:41
myrtisystemd_resolved followed by a start, but I was wondering if this is a known issue and if there's a way I can just have the dns resolution working when I log in20:42
toddcmyrti: not a issue that I have seen but easy to test   boot a live disk several time to verify router/hardware/cables are good20:45
leftyfbmyrti: why do you have dnsmasq installed?20:46

myrtinot sure, I thought DNSmasq was the default dns resolver nowadays. If it's not 'necessary' I'll try uninstalling it and see what happens20:47
myrtiif I remove dnsmasq, I assume I also need to remove the dnsstublistener=no line in /etc/systemd/resovled.conf20:48

leftyfbwait, what? You weren't running the troubleshooting commands on the machine we're troubleshooting?20:57
myrtiI am, but the issue is intermittent and not currently happening (because I can't contact anyone when it's happening)20:58

myrtihttps://bpa.st/QU4BG20:59
leftyfbmyrti: on your fritz box, what do you have set for DNS settings?20:59
myrtiI'm sorry, I'm not being of much help. I don't seem to have the correct password to access the fritz box :/ I'll try to get it21:04
leftyfbmyrti: the problem is unlikely to be your ubuntu machine. It's either a misconfiguration of your fritz box or something wrong with it or your ISP21:05
