This is 22.04 with all updates. [03:21] Display settings only goes up to 1280 x 800. [03:25] It should be able to do 1920 x 1200 pixels. [03:27] It's worse on the windows side. [04:29] Hi all! Is 24.10 available for download? [04:33] naah :( I will try on Tuesday === deepSleep is now known as Guest4551 === itu is now known as Guest4034 === ReimuHakurei_ is now known as ReimuHakurei === Guest4034 is now known as itu === Polochon_street_ is now known as Polochon_street [07:17] I upgraded from ubuntu server 22 to 24, and if I use the version 6 kernel it can't find my raid drives. [07:50] 24.04, got slack in snap, every time I get a slack message notification the sound comes from laptop integrated speaker and Firefox loses my Jabra conference speaker. picard.gif. I need to unplug and plug in again and it works until I receive the next message. But I'd like to still be able to set caps lock with, say, Shift+Caps Lock. [10:12] it should be an option during install time [10:12] I've never actually used the new flutter-based installer; the older installer had a limitation that you were only offered FDE if you chose to use the entire disk [10:12] i.e. no encryption for dual-boot users :( [10:13] Is there a way to install it on an existing system? [10:13] no easy way [10:14] there's ecryptfs, the old still barely supported way of encrypting a single directory like ~/Private (or the entire ~) [10:14] I hesitate to recommend it; I understand that support for it is likely be dropped from one of the future releases [10:14] there's also ext4 native encryption support (fscrypt), but it doesn't seem to be integrated with the OS [10:14] and all the tutorials I've seen seemed scary [10:15] Ok I see, maybe I will have to reinstall my whole system [10:15] if you can, that will be the most simple/reliable way [10:16] -_- wow such a pain [10:18] Thanks everyone === mrbutthead10 is now known as mrbutthead1 [10:36] mgedmin: ecryptfs was soooo bad, it slowed down filesystem access [10:40] and the filename length limitations! [10:41] and you couldn't share files with a virtual machine over nfs [10:41] I am forced to do it because of compliance. [10:46] Guest80: forced to do what? [10:54] so does "full disk encryption" necessarily have to work on the "full disk"? Not even a partition? ^_^; [10:56] join #kubuntu [10:58] this recommends cryptsetup https://linuxconfig.org/partition-encryption [11:10] mari-estel: full disk encryption usually encrypts partitions [11:11] don't know what the one in ubuntu specifically does at the moment, but earlier versions used luks on partitions below zfs (or presumably other filesystems) [11:22] I wonder why Ubuntu couldn't randomize LVM volume names for the LVM-based encryption (haven't checked out newer versions but I hope it's been retired) [11:24] this deficiency becomes very apparent the moment you try to copy some data from an old Ubuntu encrypted drive to a new encrypted installation - you can't mount it because of the name collision [11:28] yeah, it's not just encryption related, any LVM usage has this quirk [11:30] could've been fixed by changing fixed vgubuntu to vgubuntu-aSdF (random name on every install), no? [13:21] Ever since I upgraded to the latest LTS in Lubuntu (24.x), Xorg has been setting DPMS for turning off my screens at only 10 minutes idle. I use xset -dpms, check that it is disabled with xset q, but ultimately it just comes back in a matter of minutes. I ideally want to use Lubuntu's Idle Watcher, which is set to 30 minutes, so I doubt it's kicking DPMS in Xorg back on. Anyone have an idea why updating from 22 LTS to 24 LTS [13:21] might start telling Xorg to use DPMS, and re-enable it even if I manually disable it? [20:10] ? [20:28] has anyone else noticed weird behavior in WorldOfWarcraft (via lutris) in 24.10? I sometimes get stuck keys, up to not being able to control my character at all via keyboard, and then the whole program freezing, not even being able to tab out. Not sure why. Using KDE Plasma Wayland and KDE Plasma X11. [20:28] noticed the same with an earlier dev release, but the behavior seems to have persisted at least in parts (so far I haven't had a full freeze, just temporary stuck keys) [21:03] hmm... seems firefox doesn't remember window sizes anymore... and neither does thunderbird, or any other program. Is that a wayland bug? [21:20] I have a 512gb drive. is there a safe way reduce the size of the drive partition without loosing data? How small can I make or how can I tell ? [21:22] GrandPa-G: you need to have a backup of any data you cannot afford to loose. this is so whether or not you are planning to resize partitions or file systems. [21:23] resizing is easier if you have LVM [21:23] but also without, it's doable, just more complicated. [21:27] depends on the filesystem :/ [21:30] it is a fat32 if that is what you mean. [21:33] that's L V S in lower case letters [21:35] nothing [21:42] GrandPa-G: okay then you'll need to repartition indeed. this will likely need to be done from a separate system, such as gparted-live [21:42] or the ubuntu installer / live system [21:44] ok, big picture question. I want to send someone a way to duplicate my system. What is easiest for both of us? [21:47] what's easy for the two of you depends much on how much each of you is into linux, i guess. if you're referring to a full disk image then, unless this is a VPS/VM you'll need to boot off a different storage and then have some place to write the same-size image to. [21:48] there is also clonezilla-live which can help you clone a full disk [21:49] or you could just do tarball backups. [21:49] !backup [21:49] There are many ways to back your system up.
