eelstreborhow can the package manager alert me to available updates but can't download and install them. doesn't make sense00:02
enigma9o7How does that not make sense?00:02
enigma9o7apt update fetches the list of avaliable packages, and compares with what you have, lets you know what's eligible for upgrade00:02
enigma9o7But you could easily have broken things so not everything is installable.00:03
enigma9o7There's also "phased updates" now too.00:03

eelstreborenigma9o7, how can it connect to the repositories to see what needs to be updated and yet apt can't download and install those packages? if it can connect to get a list of upgradable packages then it should be able to upgrade those packages. this isn't an issue with phasing03:32

MarkB2Uh oh... I've a problem.  But not sure if it belongs here or not.. Here goes.21:24
MarkB2I've an older system that dual-boots between Linux and Win10.  The systems are on two different drives.21:25
MarkB2System failed to boot into W10 last night with a 0xc00000225 error.  [more]21:25
MarkB2Booted it into Linux and ran the memory checker.21:26
MarkB2That failed at 58%.  The memory checker just crashed.  It also crashes when in "failsafe" mode.21:26
MarkB2I pull two 2GB sticks.  And the memory checker succeeds.21:27
MarkB2Bad memory?  I start swapping sticks.  If all four sticks are in then the memory checker crashes.  If any two sticks are remove, the checker succeeds.21:27
srgSounds like a bad motherboard.21:28
MarkB2Does not matter which sticks are in which sockets.  If two are in then good.  If 4 are in then bad.21:28
MarkB2And to top it off, No matter what I do, Win10 drops into its Recovery software with that 225 error.21:29
MarkB2srg: a bad motherboard.  <groan>21:29
pragmaticenigmaMarkB2: you've already ruled out bad ram by swapping the modules around, and noting a limit of 2 results in a succesfully boot. that leaves the motherboard as having a fault.21:30
MarkB2What blows my mind is that Ubuntu 20.0.4 boots up nicely.  It's what Hexchat is running on.21:30
MarkB2I was ..hoping.. someone here could have a different take on the problem.21:30
BrandonTaylorI appear to have installed Ubuntu 24.10 correctly, albeit in a roundabout fashion. I'll reboot and see what happens.21:30
MarkB2pragmaticenigma: It won't boot Win10 despite if there is 1, 2, or 4 sticks in there.21:31
MarkB2Is there anything in the Ubuntu boot process I can look at?  I'm not even sure what I would look at... at least the output of dmesg.21:32
=== nshire2 is now known as nshire
MarkB2I'm not sure how to interpret dmesg's output in the face of a failure like this.21:33
pragmaticenigmaMarkB2: Windows will continue to drop to a recovery mode until it successfully completes what it needs done there. there's nothing from the ubuntu side that will help further diagnose the problem. you completed the exact same taks that someone at a computer repair shop would happily charge you lots of money to do, to tell you, motherboard is no good.21:34
MarkB2Also... burnt a Win10 repair CD last summer.  I know its good.  But... it also drops into the 225 error.21:35
MarkB2pragmaticenigma: Yes, I think I've covered the bases... but running out and purchasing a 'puter isn't what I had in mind.  I have a backup, a Lenovo i3-class laptop, that has temporarily picked up the slack.21:36
MarkB2The Win10 HD seems to be intact.  Can connect it to the laptop.21:37
pragmaticenigmaMarkB2: I'm sorry, but I do not understand what more you are expecting. You have a hardware problem, it cannot be solved with software. You're fortunate that you can at least continue to access your data (and hopefully have made a backup of that data.)21:40
MarkB2A restore disk was created last Summer.  It just kind of gets me that Linux boots and runs, and Win10 falls flat on its face.  Well, maybe it doesn't get me that back (Linux is superior) but that Win10 can't point a finger somewhere...21:42
brandon-taylorI know what's the matter... I think my darn video card is too old. I just can't freaking believe it... I mean, I only just upgraded the thing a couple of years ago!21:43
pragmaticenigmaMarkB2: I don't know windows, and cannot offer insight on that part of your system. Yes, there are additional components that Windows validates and checks on boot that probably aren't required or leverages for a Linux environment. What has nerfed your RAM controller, may have also broke other components such as TPM chips, Disk Drive interface controllers, etc. An integral thing such as RAM controller being broken is an automatic stop21:48
pragmaticenigmausing that motherboard, type thing in my book.21:48
=== Guest32 is now known as hagonbc
rock8000you must line up the windows to pull out the cross!22:23
MarkB2pragmaticenigma: Agreed.  In the bad old days all the electronics was discrete and socketed.  Now?  No one fixes motherboards; there's just no way to do it (except maybe for Louis Rossman).22:26
MarkB2Dang.  This was a good system.  One good thing was the power draw: about 200 watts with everything turned on.22:28
pragmaticenigmaMarkB2: Most of the discrete logic you are thinking of, is now on the CPU. Your analogy is akin to comparing an Internal Combustion Engine to an Electric Car, it doesn't make sense22:29
MarkB2Lots of sockets.  And it has TWO PCI sockets.  PCIe 16, two PCIe small.22:30
MarkB2Where am I going to find a motherboard with a couple of PCI sockets...?22:30
pragmaticenigmaMarkB2: Look at motherboards designed for industrial and commerical applications. they're out there22:32

tomreyndrm is not a loadable module, it's part of the kernel23:17
tomreynradeon did initialize before amdgpu, and i suspect that's why you had no graphics.23:18
tomreyntogether with not denying radeon to drive the card, and asking amdgpu to do so23:18
brandon-taylorSo you think those modules are conflicting with one another?23:18
tomreynno, i don't think they conflict (other than whatever grabs the hardware first prevents it for the other). i think you should try to do what the arch linux wiki suggests in 2.223:20
tomreynnote that 2.2.2 won't work on ubuntu because ubuntu does not use mkinitcpio but (mkinitramfs / ) update-initramfs - which you should run after applying the changes in 2.2.2.123:22
