Luna_UKHappy 20 years to Ubuntu07:36
zxmpihave been using it since first launched but i suspect when i get my next pc or laptop i might try a different distro as i hate snap that much07:37
Luna_UKi have used it since 7.04 or 7.1007:42
Luna_UKgot a CD from Shipit from an old classmate when i had problems with ATI drivers on openSUSE as i changed from an NVIDIA to an Ati GPU card07:42
zxmpii will probably scurry back after trying other distros but might be time to have a proper look and try of other distros07:43
zxmpii found a case for 5 while clearing out last year :-)07:43
davefzxmpi: if you want kinda a ubuntu experience without snap, Pop!_OS works very nicely. it's been my go to for desktop use.13:41
zxmpikinda have slackware on my radar with the intention to give it a spin when i have some new hardware to linux up. but will add popos to the list.13:41
davefpop is maintained by the System76 laptop people13:42
davefi've not touched slackware in forever13:43
davefi remember it in the 90s, installing from floppy disk 13:43
penguin42yeh same here13:43
zxmpifloppy disk... singular? :-P13:46
davefprobably 2 or 3 floppies.. i forget13:47
davefby the late 90s i found Coral Linux .. i ran that until it was discontinued13:47
davefaround that time Coral Linux was the one that "just worked" for me, but it sucked that most 3rd party binary software wouldn't run. If all you needed was a browser, email and productivity, it was fine (and that's all I needed then) 13:50
* penguin42 thought he bought slackware home on a few boxes of floppies13:50
davefoh, you just unlocked a memory. yes.. i remember seeing a boxed copy of slack. it contained something like 20 floppies13:51
davefmore than Windows 95 on floppy if I recall lol13:51
davefand you haven't lived until you've installed Windows 95 from floppy disk13:52
zxmpidid that twice. i've lived life to the fullest :-D14:10
zxmpiwin95 was 26 floppies iirc. and once the disks were used once they were unreadable. they used a wacky >1.44mb format that made them twitchy14:11
zxmpithe experience thought me to install cd roms anywhere. my ultimate install was a peer to peer install from dos sharing a cd-rom from a different system on the system installing windows :-)14:12
davefi remember the horrible format, it registered as 1.7MB or something if I recall. making copies of the disks was difficult, but not impossible.14:22
zxmpiit was the last time i installed an os from floppy14:48
zxmpicd then dvd then usb drives. some of those early cd drives were very slow mind14:49
