GudduI am facing a weird error on Ubuntu. I copied 7 GB worth of files and the file copy operation was complete but when I ry to unmount i get a message saying Writing data to USB. Device should not be unplugged. What could be the reason. It has happened in the past then after seeing the file opration complete i disconnected the USB only to find that the file was corrupt.00:21
rboxthe reason for what00:22
Guddurbox, Why would i get the message that file copy was complete when it is not.00:23
ravageThe reason is that you need to unmount the device before removing it00:23
ravageIt still copies cached data after the file operation is complete00:24
ravageSo use unmount or click the eject button for the device in your file manager00:24

mgedminwhat sort of graphics does your laptop have (intel/nvidia/amd)?08:39
mgedminI have an issue with my thinkpad not detecting the external monitor (connected via usb c/thunderbolt dock and a displayport cable I think?); usually unplugging and plugging the usb c cable fixes that08:39
mgedminxrandr is a good tool when you're using the legacy Xorg session; for wayland it'd be better to look at something else (gnome-control-center?), as IIRC Xwayland's implementation of RANDR only shows a small subset, basically reflecting the current configuration only08:40
mgedminit may be useful to run journalctl -f in a terminal when you plug in the cable and see if there are any interesting messages showing up at that time08:41

xclhi, how display image.png runing in tmux command ?13:49
leftyfbxcl: can you be more specific?13:49
younderJust a question can you 'chsh -s /usr/bin/fish' without running into trouble at bootime?13:49
mgedminboot time shouldn't be using the user's shell; where you should expect trouble is during login time13:50
CosmicDJxcl: like this? https://github.com/TheZoraiz/ascii-image-converter?tab=readme-ov-file#flags13:51
mgedminGUI login is a complicated process; at one time I had issues because my ~/.profile would source my ~/.bashrc (because I only use bash), but Debian's .xsession would source ~/.profile using /bin/sh (aka /bin/dash), and any bashisms in my .bashrc would render my unable to log in13:52
mgedminthen things swung in another direction and wayland sessions stopped using the shell at all, leaving me without my custom $PATH, making GUI sessions unusable13:52
mgedminnow wayland sessions use the shell somehow and then I think do dbus magic to transfer the environment to gnome-session somehow13:53
mgedminso, I wouldn't expect chsh -s /usr/bin/fish to break things (much), but if things did break, I wouldn't be too surprised13:53
mgedminthere are various tools that execute subcommands and assume the shell is more or less compatible with /bin/sh; I know that e.g. vim has a help topic for helping fish users cope13:54
mgedminit might be safer to set up a terminal profile to run fish insead of your login shell13:54
mgedminunless you also want fish for ssh logins13:54
mgedminand tty logins13:54
xclThank you CosmicDj,  ascii-image-converter so cool!,but i need display in tmux like kitty use icat ,true color ,not ascii,14:06

FKAShinobiDoes ubuntu plan to update the qbittorrent version in the 22.04 repo due to the CVE reported in versions < 5.0.115:27
leftyfb!latest | FKAShinobi15:27
ubottuFKAShinobi: Packages in Ubuntu may not be the latest. Ubuntu aims for stability, so "latest" may not be a good idea. yziquel__ravage ok. the vorlon said it was not building anymore. ok.19:13
leftyfbyziquel__: what's wrong with containers? I use them for everything19:15
yziquel__leftyfb: i've been unfrozen from ice since 2011. computing has changed quite a bit. I'm not comfortable with them. And I like to have (s)chroots to build packages like i did back in the old days. Spinning up a container, which tends to pollute a global namespace like it does with incus, is not quite my cup of tea, if i can avoid it.19:17
yziquel__leftyfb moreover containers do not share the same filesystem that easily, and virtiofs has proved a pain, with the missing DAX window not allowing some memory mapping. and when i fix these issues, people start behaving very annoyingly if not despicably, as it happened in #rust. so i'll stick to ebvironment variables instead of going into a whirlwind of complexity that i feel is unwarranted.19:21

JayFleftyfb: ack; I will then. Didn't know if it was considered polite to contact maintainers directly out of band :) (for my project, for instance, I'd want someone to go to IRC or the list not to my personal inbox :D)22:32
leftyfbJayF: you are unlikely to find maintainers here22:32
causativeif my laptop sound card does not work with Ubuntu, will an "external sound card" like this https://www.bestbuy.com/site/creative-sound-blasterx-external-sound-card/6470382.p?skuId=6470382 work?22:52
causativeI mean in general , assuming that particular card is compatible with Ubuntu, would it do the same job as an internal sound card?22:52

causativesome devices like that say they are "virtual sound cards." I'm guessing that means would *not* work?22:55
causativelike this https://www.ebay.com/itm/114143807052?itmmeta=01JBWP4KXM8GTEXET35A4J14BA&hash=item1a9380464c:g:SukAAOSw69BeZtsn&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAAwMxmj%2BiGvOveHXEBClPb29i5Z6fb3oCeIHrNX2kjF2SfogMcwtKqDucUSKsP23rvRHD5kB7LPcI5%2FndYgrpoCTfd%2F3PNhpRkM0RmwptgBxJZ9AgYwdWrQM4g5ku%2BHSEAkWLjwIHSAXgPPtudEkinKPeFmkv2vPLY2nOQG6490Lq2sLQdxwpGv%2FwqlMI6ojj2Lq9UiVJ2U8ngxGlGlDR91EAOhPREsyoXnC02hwKFPX5%2BK4mAxv4H26LQP5HRaOd8Wg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_C-kpbfZA22:55
causativelike I'm guessing a "virtual sound card" device would depend on an existing sound card to work?22:58

ravagevirtual is about the 7.1 sound i guess22:59
ravagedont expect anything else but stereo out of it22:59
causativewhat else would I want out of it?22:59
causativeI mean what features are you saying it wouldn't have?23:00
ravage7.1 "surround" sound23:01
ravageit says linux. so it will probably output sound23:01
ravagejust dont expect anything for under 3 dollars23:02
causativenot sure I would be able to tell the difference between 7.1 or whatever, I just want something that successfully outputs sound23:03
causativewithout depending on an existing card23:04
ravage3 dollars probably won't ruin you. buy it. test it23:04
=== seanh1 is now known as seanh
causativecould be a waste of time though, it says it's a "sound card adapter" not sure that means it actually contains a sound card23:06
ravagei can't print you a certificate for it23:09
ravagerisk it or don't23:09
