tuna_lord237948 | hello i'm having some issues with xubuntu version 22. i'm trying to use this icon pack: https://www.gnome-look.org/p/2091068 but the issue is that it has symbolic links in the file structure and it's not working correctly. on my desktop (which was accidnetally updated to ubuntu version 24 but it's still mostly xubuntu) the theme works as intended. can someone help me figure out the issue? | 15:01 |
PeGaSuS | I assume that other packages are needed. especially since that seems to be GNOME specific and Xubuntu uses XFCE4 | 15:39 |
oerheks | gnome plasma compatible, indeed. maybe there is a simular one for xfce | 15:40 |
tuna_lord237948 | so then it looks like when my system bugged out and recommended the ubuntu upgrade (i didn't know better) it made changes that allowed that theme to work. | 15:43 |
tuna_lord237948 | well crap. i'll poke around and see if i can find another one that is compatible. i liked that theme. | 15:44 |
tuna_lord237948 | ok new issue. i have a test install on an external hard drive. yesterday i learned the hard way that when i installed it, my internal ssd bootloader got overridden so i repaired that and i also did what i THOUGHT would make the external drive a truly portable install. this did not work and now it no longer reads as bootable. | 16:34 |
oerheks | seems like it was never bootable. some bios version can disable internal hdd controllers. the only way to true booting external | 16:36 |
tuna_lord237948 | it booted just fine. in fact the laptop would not boot without the external drive because the onboard drive's grub install was removed during setup for some reason that baffles me. | 16:37 |
tuna_lord237948 | now the laptop is bootable, but the external is not. | 16:38 |
tuna_lord237948 | yeah doesn't look like grub is working on the external anymore | 16:40 |
tuna_lord237948 | i'm booting up the install media now | 16:41 |
tuna_lord237948 | still no luck. it says that grub was installed but it's still not detecting the drive | 17:00 |
Guest8910 | Hey all, just installed xubuntu on my T420 | 18:48 |

andrew__ | can someone help me set up a portable xubuntu install on an external sata hard drive? i have it set up in a usb 2.0 caddy. | 21:44 |
andrew__ | i had it booting before, but the setup removed the grub bootloader from my onboard ssd. then after i fixed that it stopped detecting the hard drive as bootable. i've reinstalled grub on it twice now. | 21:45 |
andrew__ | i repaired the onboard ssd with the graphical boot repair tool. then i did the same with the external, no effect. | 21:46 |
tomreyn | andrew__: in case you cannot get a response here, for such questions which are not specific to xubuntu, you can also ask in #ubuntu | 21:54 |
andrew__ | and i got it fixed. the setup did NOT put an efi partition on the external, it just repurposed the efi partition on the onboard ssd. | 22:31 |
andrew__ | why in the CRAP would it assume you would want that? | 22:31 |
tomreyn | andrew__: i think that's because it assumes that every system only has one ESP, or that you always want to install o the one it considers to be the primary. one of the two, i guess. it's a long standing bug, i'm afraid. | 22:51 |
tomreyn | you can prevent it by using a VM to do the installation on removable media | 22:51 |
andrew__ | never used a virtual machine for that purpose before | 23:26 |
