=== diceLibrarian2 is now known as liceDibrarian [00:36] Welp... [00:37] With such a setup, and the password provided during the boot, it results in: https://imgur.com/a/LX5dwia [00:38] I've never had issues with KDE neon, and suddenly, with the new year, I am trying to switch onto more stable environment... [00:38] Is Kubuntu actually more stable than neon? [00:40] Hi! Could anyone help me or point me to a resource on the following issue: keyboard layouts resets to just US after rebooting. I am usng Kubuntu 22.04 LTS and wayland [00:41] diego: hey! [00:41] How did you set it to not be US? [00:42] Or, what should it be set otherwise? [00:43] I added spanish and english intl keyboard layouts in System Settings -> Input Devices -> Keyboard -> Layouts [00:44] Colors: I've never had an issue with my LUKS device. Is this a fresh install? [00:44] It works during the current session. But once I reboot it goes back to just English US [00:45] Yes, it's a fresh install. I did add wayland and I'm using it [00:46] diego: Is your preferred layout at the top of the list (I don't know how it determines default)? [00:47] Not after reboot. My two choices are gone and only English US shows up [00:48] There's also the Input Method menu under Regional Settings, but Ive left that as Default, Keyboard - English US [00:50] diego: This is Kubuntu, correct? [00:50] diego: This claims to have solved it; didn't read the entire thread. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=284058 [00:50] diego: for further reading https://www.google.com/search?q=kde+does+not+keep+keyboard+layout+between+boots [00:51] pedahzur: yes, as mentioned above, I've just tried installing the latest Kubuntu x64 on an SSH drive with reset partition table (GPT) manually set to: https://i.imgur.com/EeBSplw.jpeg (which looks now like: https://i.imgur.com/4jzUStS.png) [00:51] I'm currently trying to have all the partitions the same password. [00:51] Yes, Kubuntu. Thanks, I'll take a look [00:52] Colors: Does it prompt you for the password for each partition? [00:53] With the new OS installed on the above paritition table, and a reboot, a single prompt apperas during the boot, and ater - the error above. Though, I'm sure the password is valid (if it supports key Shift for upper-case). [00:53] pedahzur: a single prompt appears. I guess it tries the same password for every partition after. [00:54] The "timeout" may be because you aren't entering all the passwords in time. It will prompt for each password. A better thing to do is to create an encrypted device, created an LVM physical volume on top of that, and then create logical volumes. I walk through the entire process here: https://joshuakugler.com/installing-kde-with-lvm-and-luks.html [00:54] I enetered the passwords in 4 seconds [00:54] The password* [00:55] All 3 partitions have the same password since I just try it only. [00:55] Colors: Yes, but each partition requires an entry of the password, unless it's reading an on-disk key for the other passwords. Are you prompted for each partition? [00:55] I am not. [00:55] That's odd. [00:56] I say the third time - a single prompt appears, and then it tries to tboot. [00:56] I don't find it odd. [00:56] KDE neon does not require multiple prompts, too. === diego897x is now known as diego [00:57] If multiple partitions have the same password, a setup with KDE neon won't request multiple prompts, too, but a single one. [00:57] When I've done multiple devices in the past, I always had to enter passwords for each device, unless I did an on-disk key which was read off the first device for the other devices. [00:57] (even if the passwords were the same) [00:57] The above partition table is identical to the one I had on neon. [00:57] Same passwords. [00:57] Single prompt - everything works. [00:58] Interesting. [00:58] Kubuntu, though, times out. [00:58] Thank you pedahzur, the archlinux post solved it [00:58] diego: Excellent! [01:00] pedahzur: I guess you mean the keys: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_an_entire_system#Avoiding_having_to_enter_the_passphrase_twice [01:00] Yet, I hadn't those on neon. [01:03] Colors: Yes, those keys. :) I found great success with LUKS + LVM method in my blog post, if you're looking for something new to try. :) [01:22] pedahzur, I've checked your post. It should work. I will try. Thank you very much for the awesome share and effort! [01:36] For some unknown reason, LUKS2 is missing in the KDE Partition Manager. [01:36] I mean https://joshuakugler.com/static/neon_luk2_lvm_install_5.png [01:37] Which is from the post of pedahzur. [01:37] There's no checkbox "Enable LUKS2" [01:39] Found a similar post: https://askubuntu.com/q/1513571 [01:44] What the heck is?: https://github.com/KDE/partitionmanager/commit/a66b50232f4e16f246383970bde7abbb11dcef16#diff-337a23add1a23dc4dc180c8cf594aeba7fe9800d7ee7111590f52e537e7fcb7dR179 [01:44] -ubottu:#kubuntu- Commit a66b502 in KDE/partitionmanager "Add LUKS2 option when creating LUKS partition" [01:45] They literally unconditionally hid the checkbox for LUKS2 and then added a condition that LUKS2 gets created ONLY when the checkbox is show? [15:08] I am currently trying to setup a system according to the page: https://joshuakugler.com/installing-kde-with-lvm-and-luks.html [15:08] I've followed and the current state of the disk is: https://dpaste.com/3M29TK2QB [15:38] Yet, when I launch the PC, I get a blinking cursor only on black screen. [15:39] What could it be? How would you try investigating it? [15:40] With an additional reboot, I see Grub asking what option to boot and with "Kubuntu" chosen: the blinking cursor. [15:41] Yes, I get the decryption prompt. [18:27] Gracious... [18:27] So, I've connected from another device. [18:27] Apparently, Kubuntu is a heck of a headache to install. [18:28] Finally, I'm able to boot into the OS, but... [18:28] When I enter the user password, the whole PC freeze. [18:28] Even Ctrl+Alt+F3 doesn't work. [18:29] I'll ask again, is Kubuntu stable to focus on? [18:29] I had NO such issues on KDE neon, like... at all. [18:30] I chose Kubuntu since it's advertized as the most stable of KDE distribution and KDE neon - experimental. [18:32] I am sorry, but from my experience of 2-3 days installing it on that laptop, Kubuntu is a fucking mess. [18:34] I changed nothing, I've just rebooted the machine, tried to log in with X11 chosen, and now it shows an empty desktop with "Add widget" on the taskbar only on the bottom. Nothing else on the screen. [18:34] Is that expected? What widgets is required to be added? [18:36] That is atypical. Which version did you try to install? Did you change any defaults, or just keep clicking Next? [18:37] This is the latest Kubuntu ISO stable downloaded from the official website. [18:37] Just clicked next, normally. The install is "Normal install" [18:38] It's probably the 18th time I try to install this OS in those 2-3 days... [18:38] The ISO sha256 checksum matches the published. [19:04] on what hardware, Colors ? [19:04] we only support kubuntu, not neon [19:05] As mentioned, I had no issues on Neon, but the feel that it's experimental and is normally not for daily basis, made it nkt an option. I thought Kubuntu is its stable version, but dear these differ so much... [19:05] oerheks: Lenovo X201 [19:05] how much memory/what GPU ? [19:07] 8 GB RAM, CPU i7 620m, GPU is integrated (the CPU is in APU) - Intel Graphics [19:08] Look, it's sure not the first distro, and I've tried plenty. Debian with KDE plasma is the next what I'll go next if Kubuntu is such a mess. [19:09] Before neon it was Debian with AwesomeWM, and I should probably return to it at this point even. [19:10] I have no fucking idea why those automations of Kubuntu result in bugs over bugs [19:11] please keep the language family friendly, thanks [19:11] I literally do nothing so custom, but it's either bliking cursor on boot, frozen machine on login, no taskbar when logged in etx. [19:11] i have no idea what bugs you point to, with such system kubuntu should run properly [19:12] Thanks, oerheks, thanks indeed. [19:12] i only run LTS, 24.04 [19:12] stable [19:16] oerheks: these are my notes how I install it right now: https://paste.gg/p/anonymous/50836a7524d840bf8461ff7b5cae10c9 [19:17] The funny thing is that I do literally exactly the same each time, and EVERY SINGLE TIME something new happens, as mentioned above. [19:17] I literally boot again to that Live env, do the same steps, an dreboot. [19:19] Then if that blinking cursos appears on BIOS, I do the same knstalltion steps with new GPT table on that Kingston SSD (so, it's all clean), and, surprize, no blinking cursor. [19:20] Then, whem I do another reinstall, the blinking cursos may or may not happen, and if it does, only an additional EXACT SAME freaking WHOLE reinstallhelps. [19:21] It's been freakimg 3 day of this hell hapenning in this freaking Kubuntu. [19:21] Is it possible to have that Kubuntu installed completely in 2024?! [19:22] Regardless, you won't help, since you have better things to do. [19:22] Thanks everyone. Stay safe. === diceLibrarian2 is now known as liceDibrarian [21:04] I've installed kubuntu 24.10 and in Wayland my icons since times loses their position.
