mgedminyes07:04
rfmomega_doom, yeah, I think it's the sum of all the .deb files it will get07:04

ropedUbuntu 24.04.1. When creating a VM in VirtualBox 7.0.16-dfsg-2ubuntu1.1, which I installed through App Center, I can't choose a physical hard drive. Is that not possible anymore? I am noticning in extension pack manager that there's no extension pack installed by default (due to licensing issues perhaps?), could this be the reason for not being able to attach a physical hard disk to a VM?07:18
mgedminI'm not familiar with virtualbox (I prever qemu-based VMs, e.g. Boxes or libvirt+virt-manager), I think it's more likely a permission issue07:23
mgedminas a regular user you don't normally have permissions to access raw hard disks07:23
mgedminyou can give yourself permissions with 'sudo chown yourusername /dev/sdX', but it will last only until the next reboot07:26
rfmroped, noth‌ing to do with extension packs. you need to create a raw vmdk as root, then chmod it to be readable by vbox, read the vbox docs. in general it's not worth the trouble..07:29
Guest45Hi07:31
ropedmgedmin, will the VirtualBox GUI detect I have permissions after I do it and offer to attach the physical drive, or would I need to resort to the CLI VBoxManage tool to create the raw vmdk?07:35
ropedoh I just saw what you wrote above07:35
ropedI guess I can just try07:35
Guest45How do you get account suspension lifter when suspended for too many password resets wrt ubuntu one?07:36
Guest45there appears to be no login support unless you have a technical issue07:36
ropednot being able to log is a technical issue :D07:38
Guest45How do you proceed with unsuspending account07:39
ropedI would just contact support and say I can't log07:40
ropedlikely they shall be able to figure out the reason and offer a password reset07:41

crorafHey. I updated from 22.04 to 24.04.1 and I have big issues with the system. Graphics issues, slow response when opening apps, slow search, cannot adjust screen brightness...08:04
crorafI get this immediately after startup https://paste.pics/84df7ce67d44348ad23440a3797815cc08:05
hid3Greetings. Are the any rumours on what kernel will be available in 24.04.2 which is about to roll out within 12 days?08:11
crorafHi. I updated from 22.04 to 24.04.1 and I have big issues with the system. Graphics issues, slow response when opening apps, slow search, cannot adjust screen brightness... Please help.10:16
pickanickThis sounds like a troubling error, is it? 22.04 apt update reports: "Skipping the installation of the AppArmor profile as this version of AppArmor does not seem to support the bundled profile"10:18
jellypickanick, that does not look lkike it would happen in a literal "apt update" command; you probably had some package upgrades running and one or more of them have slightly incompatible (too new?) profiles.  Context is important, figure out _which_ package upgrade said that10:25
=== mateus-morais0 is now known as mateus-morais
tomreyncroraf: how did you upgrade? which graphics card / iGPU do you have there, which driver (if you know). do you use 3rd party software via apt (then place share your apt sources). what's the output of  journalctl -kb0 -p4 |& nc termbin.com 999911:42
crorafHi tomreyn. Nice to see you, I always got great help from you :). I upgrade using Software Updater built in app.11:43
crorafI think that during upgrade it said something about graphics card driver. Like that it is not supported any more or smth.11:44
crorafhttps://paste.pics/5d14b40529bf8e8ed153588b6a23b94a tomreyn11:45
tomreyncroraf: regarding the error message you posted a screenshot of ( https://paste.pics/84df7ce67d44348ad23440a3797815cc ) - that's apparently a third party software called "Signer", and this forum thread may have a workaround: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/signer-error-unable-to-register-application-to-system-tray/15193511:45
crorafAlso the GRUB parameters look strange after upgrade, and I tried to add pci=nommconf that I had before, but didnt change much. Not sure if I added properly11:46
croraftomreyn, yea I also concluded it's some minor software that I use for something11:46
fury999iodon't leave irc 😭11:47
ravageJust don't type /quit11:47
tomreyncroraf: so you have an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Mobile (TU104BM). https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ lists what nvidia currently supports, and you could check whether one of the newer driver series (550 specifically) also supports your hardware.11:50
crorafShould I try to use this latest Nvidia driver, topmost on the image. 550?11:50
tomreyn"Mobile" = "Notebooks"11:51
tomreyncroraf: does this answer your question on whether you should try 550?11:51
crorafI'll just try it :)11:51
crorafGot a strange error. Just popup with X11:52
tomreynwhen you do what, and what does it say?11:52
crorafI checked nvidia-driver-550 (propriatery, tested) - and Apply Changes11:53
crorafhttps://paste.pics/56b481a9010764ae3eeef65a6594a71111:53
tomreyni think giving the 550 series driver a try can be a good idea.11:53
tomreyni see, this error message is not exactly helpful :)11:54
crorafyea :|11:54
tomreyni assume this was meant to report an installation error for the 550 driver11:55
tomreynat least the icon should indicate that an error occurred11:55
crorafI searched now through Nvidia webpage https://paste.pics/927b4c986e9fbe0bdad7629f23ccda2f11:55
crorafI can try the latest one suggested there?11:55
tomreyndon't download those, i just linked to nvidia.com to explain how you can check for compatibilitxy between driver series and your hardware11:56
tomreynit's much better to use the drivers ubuntu provides11:56
crorafThis link that you shared does not have a mention of the GPU model https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/11:58
crorafWait I started this session with pci=nommconf11:58
crorafShould I try to restart and install this 55011:59
tomreyncroraf: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ lists nvidia supported driver series. you can compare those to those listted by the ubuntu 'additional drivers' application / tab, make notre of which ones ubuntu provides and then click that version on the nvidia site to check whether ti supports your hardware.12:02
tomreyni.e., on https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ you would clixk on " Latest Production Branch Version: 550.144.03 ", because "550" is the latest and tested ubuntu provides12:03
tomreynthere, you click on "Supported Products", and look for your graphics card12:03
tomreynyes, i suggest that you boot without "pci=nommconf" if you can, and then try to install the 550 driver from additional drivers, and reboot again12:04
tomreynthen, if there are still issues, run    journalctl -kb0 -p4 |& nc termbin.com 9999    and post the url it printed12:05
crorafhey tomreyn , now i restarted (which means pci=nommconf was not applied this time) and it switched me to Nouveau. It seems to work a bit better, but still no display ligthing feature12:07
tomreynhmm, not sure why it would use nouveau rather than the proprietary driver if that's installed.12:08
crorafBut now I was able to switch to 55012:08
tomreynwith this somewhat recent hardware, you probably should use one of the nvidia drivers, no nouveau12:09
crorafIt says I need to restart, so wish me good luck if I'm not able to boot :|12:09
tomreyngood luck12:09
tomreynif you want this to be easier and more reliable in the future, buy amd or intel gpus next time12:09
croraftomreyn, it works now.12:10
crorafI have display lightning bar.12:11
croraf550 is marked as used.12:11
crorafThey say Nvidia are more performant12:12
tomreynthey are once you got them working12:13
crorafIt has 5y already, but was top tier when I bought it12:13
tomreyn(and while they are supported)12:13
tomreyndo you rmeember why you had pci=nommconf ?12:14
crorafBecause of the similar issue I guess12:15
croraf2-3 years ago, or maybe even 5 years ago, when I first bought this laptop12:15

hid3Hello. Has anyone installed 6.11 kernel into 24.04 LTS release via the APT? I'm in need for it, and yet it's still 10-11 days until 24.04.2 release which is supposed to have it available...14:54
pragmaticenigmahid3: kernel versions are not usually updated mid-release cycle. is there something someone can help troubleshoot for you?14:59
hid3pragmaticenigma: it's been announced that 24.04.2 in fact will have 6.11 kernel. And I really need AMD p-state core performance boost which 6.11 supports. Not doable on 6.8.015:00
hid3I think those "introduced mid-release cycle" kernels are called HWE but I might be confusing something...15:01
sixwheeledbeastit's simply not available via apt yet15:02
hid3yeah, checked that already :)15:03
hid3point release means that all the ISOs will be packed at that day. So one can expect actual packages be available in repositories a bit earlier, right?15:03
pragmaticenigmano15:04
hid3all gets released the same day?15:04
pragmaticenigmahid3: Honestly, this channel is run by volunteers, the release order or operations is determined by Canonical. What would not make sense is pre-releasing packages before the scheduled release date.15:07
hid3well, from my previous experience with Ubuntu, point releases are no magic. Just a collection of freshly updated packages (which have already been available via APT) included in a refreshed ISO. So that if you do a fresh installation, you won't have to spend significant time downloading/upgrading gigabytes of packages... Not sure how that's done with kernels, introduced mid-release15:09
leftyfb!hwe | hid315:10
ubottuhid3: The Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack15:10
pragmaticenigmahid3: https://ubuntu.com/kernel/lifecycle15:12
pragmaticenigmahid3: as leftyfb notes, if you want the updated kernel, you will probably want to install the HWE option.15:13
hid3yeah, I'm aware of that15:13
pragmaticenigmathe link I posted shows you that kernel versions do not change... 18.04 only received the 5.4 kernel via HWE, otherwise it remained on 4.15 through its entire lifecycle.15:15
leftyfbUbuntu 24.04.2 will have the 6.11 kernel, likely before Feb 13th15:16
pragmaticenigmabut is that only if HWE in installed?15:17
hid3on 22.04 (LTS) I also managed to install 6.8.0 HWE15:17
leftyfbpragmaticenigma: yes, you'll need to be running the HWE kernel15:18

tomreynarch wiki probably has a configuration for doing that in software, too18:24
tomreynhow to do it will depend on whether you're using "nouveau" or one of the "nvidia" drivers for the nvidia gpu18:24
tomreynwhen your issue is likely related to graphics, then "dont want to explain, but I have a special gpu setup" isn't very likely to put us into a position that'll be of much use to you.18:27

bpromptgordonjcp: all the "squiggle"?   I mean, you can just remove the fonts that you don't want from the system using the font installer22:43
leftyfbgordonjcp: https://askubuntu.com/questions/371213/how-to-delete-fonts-in-ubuntu     first result on google searching for "ubuntu remove fonts"22:43
gordonjcpmy language only uses 18 of them, albeit the vowels have accents over22:43
enigma9o7I've always thought c and q were useless.22:43
gordonjcpleftyfb: did that, still have masses of fonts in languages more useful for countries with poor human rights records22:43
enigma9o7all their occurances could be replaced with k and s in some way22:43
bpromptgordonjcp: why the beef anyway? I mean, are they on your view at all times?   ohhh you mean as in an Office app like WPS22:44
gordonjcpbprompt: in graphics packages, video editing packages...22:44
leftyfbgordonjcp: that might be application specific then and you'll need to seek documentation for that application22:44
gordonjcpenigma9o7: well, we don't use j, k, q, v, w, x, or z22:44
gordonjcpin English I guess I do, but I'm not too fussed about second languages22:45
pragmaticenigmagordonjcp: is there a specific application where this is a problem?22:45
bprompthmmm22:45
gordonjcppragmaticenigma: Gimp, inkscape, and DaVinci Resolve22:45
gordonjcppragmaticenigma: it's not a showstopper, it's just annoying having roughly 2/3 of the font selector taken up by squiggle fonts22:46
pragmaticenigmaI can understand the frustration22:46
bpromptgordonjcp: it can be a "necessary" hassle, yes I get it in hmm LibreOffice apps like Calc or Draw or Write, however instead of all that scrolling,  you can just type the 1st letter of what you're looking for, most "dialog boxes" have a way to filter the entries, unless your app dialog doesn't22:47
gordonjcpI found the same link that leftyfb suggested, and while that has tamed it a little22:47
gordonjcpa bunch of them still reappear after updating, and most of the Noto ones have never left22:47
gordonjcpI get that the whole point of Noto is to cover every linguistic unicode point22:47
bpromptgordonjcp: you can alleviate the scrolling by simply typing the 1st letter of the font you're after22:48
pragmaticenigmaI think the extra languages are within a single font package. Some applications are better at displaying the primary font family in the system language, while other enumerate all of them out explicately. Sort of like having 8 fonts show up for one font-family covering combinations of bold, italic, underline, etc text22:48
bpromptbut at least in Libreoffice and WPS and other apps, the font list has a filter for it22:49
gordonjcpyeah, I've never used Libreoffice22:49
gordonjcpnot sure what I'd ever use it for22:49
gordonjcpit's like some cheesy text editor thing?22:49
bpromptheheh22:49
gordonjcpoh, it's got spreadsheets too22:49
bpromptgordonjcp: is a great office package, is not cheesy, and very Microsoft Office compatible22:50
gordonjcpbprompt: not something I'd find a use for tbh22:50
bpromptgordonjcp: roger that, I do, it works very well, well, I mostly use Calc and Draw22:50
gordonjcpI do everything in plain text22:51
oerheksDooM can now be played in LibreOffice Calc22:51
gordonjcpoerheks: I am not surprised22:51
gordonjcpbprompt: if I have to deal with "spreadsheets" then 99% of the time it's because someone says "yeah we've got that in a database" but it's actually an Excel file22:52
gordonjcpbprompt: so I get them to give me a CSV export of it and put it in a real database22:52
bpromptgordonjcp: heheh, a spreadsheet is can be an "arrayed" database, cells can and are treated as members of a range or set22:53
bpromptso I can see the definition overlap22:54
gordonjcpbprompt: actually believe it or not in Google Docs you can do SQL queries on a spreadsheet22:54
gordonjcpI've never actually done this for serious use, but it's hilarious you can get that far22:55
bpromptgordonjcp: spreadsheets do DB of kind, they have some functions/formulas that return a number of cells on a query22:57
apb1963Hello :)  24.04  I want to give my machine to my neighbor.  How can I change my login so that I am no longer the sole owner, but she is.  i.e She would become root & sole user.  Is it as simple as changing my login in the passwd & shadow files?  Or is there an official method or how do I this?  I won't be around to help her later, so I need to get it right the first time.  TY!23:30
oerheksyes, in settings > users > your user23:32
leftyfbapb1963: go to settings -< users ... add a new user and make it an admin23:32
oerheksi read that OEM install is not available in 24.04, that would create an install where on first boot of the new user he/she needs to create an user name + password https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu_OEM_Installer_Overview23:33
pragmaticenigmaapb1963: would recommend a fresh install. a lot easier, and less chance you forgot to delete something23:36
apb1963OK, I should have been ready to do it, I'm not... need to boot it first.  Sounds simple enough I suppose.  We'll see.  Thank you!23:36
apb1963pragmaticenigma, Yeah, I was afraid that might be the case.  I went through the do-release process - twice!  So reinstalling is definitely not preferable and I'd have to do it with her present and it just makes it harder.23:38
pragmaticenigmawhat do you mean do-release twice?23:39
leftyfbthat's an ugly install23:39
pragmaticenigmayeah... apb1963 for sure that is something I would not give to my friend as is. A fresh install from a freshly downloaded install image is what you should be doing23:40
apb1963I upgraded from 18.04... oh wait.. I think it's only 22.04 I don't know, I stopped upgrading when it didn't offer any more releases. :)23:40
leftyfbapb1963: I would highly recommend a fresh install using the oem install which allows you to install without creating a user. On the next boot it'll ask for the user info which she can do23:40
leftyfbif it's not available in the GRUB menu while booting the desktop iso, then you can try https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-desktop-provision/blob/main/docs/oem-provisioning-24_04_1.md#using-the-flutter-installer-without-modifying-the-livecd23:41
apb1963yeah, traditionally I always put the new install on it's own clean partition.  I thought I'd see if things had improved in the last 20 years or so :)23:41
pragmaticenigmaapb1963: it's not a matter of improved, as much as a fresh install means no one has to guess if there is a residual configs or programs that could come back to haunt. Ubuntu is forever changing, a fresh install ensures the latest and greatest. Upgrades mean that older configurations and options are retained and may create issues in the future23:43
apb1963Well, I guess today isn't the day.  I just wanted to make room and get rid of the machine.  Guess I'll have to wait until I can absorb all this info.23:44
apb1963Thank you most kindly ladies? & gentlemen!23:45
