When creating a VM in VirtualBox 7.0.16-dfsg-2ubuntu1.1, which I installed through App Center, I can't choose a physical hard drive. Is that not possible anymore? I am noticning in extension pack manager that there's no extension pack installed by default (due to licensing issues perhaps?), could this be the reason for not being able to attach a physical hard disk to a VM? [07:23] I'm not familiar with virtualbox (I prever qemu-based VMs, e.g. Boxes or libvirt+virt-manager), I think it's more likely a permission issue [07:23] as a regular user you don't normally have permissions to access raw hard disks [07:26] you can give yourself permissions with 'sudo chown yourusername /dev/sdX', but it will last only until the next reboot [07:29] roped, noth‌ing to do with extension packs. you need to create a raw vmdk as root, then chmod it to be readable by vbox, read the vbox docs. in general it's not worth the trouble.. [07:31] Hi [07:35] mgedmin, will the VirtualBox GUI detect I have permissions after I do it and offer to attach the physical drive, or would I need to resort to the CLI VBoxManage tool to create the raw vmdk? Graphics issues, slow response when opening apps, slow search, cannot adjust screen brightness... Please help. [10:18] This sounds like a troubling error, is it? 22.04 apt update reports: "Skipping the installation of the AppArmor profile as this version of AppArmor does not seem to support the bundled profile" [10:25] pickanick, that does not look lkike it would happen in a literal "apt update" command; you probably had some package upgrades running and one or more of them have slightly incompatible (too new?) profiles. Nice to see you, I always got great help from you :). I upgrade using Software Updater built in app. [11:44] I think that during upgrade it said something about graphics card driver. Not sure if I added properly [11:46] tomreyn, yea I also concluded it's some minor software that I use for something [11:47] don't leave irc 😭 [11:47] Just don't type /quit [11:50] croraf: so you have an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Mobile (TU104BM). https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ lists what nvidia currently supports, and you could check whether one of the newer driver series (550 specifically) also supports your hardware. [11:50] Should I try to use this latest Nvidia driver, topmost on the image. 550? [11:51] "Mobile" = "Notebooks" [11:51] croraf: does this answer your question on whether you should try 550? [11:51] I'll just try it :) [11:52] Got a strange error. Just popup with X [11:52] when you do what, and what does it say? [11:54] i see, this error message is not exactly helpful :) [11:54] yea :| [11:55] i assume this was meant to report an installation error for the 550 driver [11:55] at least the icon should indicate that an error occurred [11:55] I searched now through Nvidia webpage https://paste.pics/927b4c986e9fbe0bdad7629f23ccda2f [11:55] I can try the latest one suggested there? [11:56] don't download those, i just linked to nvidia.com to explain how you can check for compatibilitxy between driver series and your hardware [11:56] it's much better to use the drivers ubuntu provides [11:58] This link that you shared does not have a mention of the GPU model https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ [11:58] Wait I started this session with pci=nommconf [11:59] Should I try to restart and install this 550 [12:02] croraf: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ lists nvidia supported driver series. you can compare those to those listted by the ubuntu 'additional drivers' application / tab, make notre of which ones ubuntu provides and then click that version on the nvidia site to check whether ti supports your hardware. [12:03] i.e., on https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ you would clixk on " Latest Production Branch Version: 550.144.03 ", because "550" is the latest and tested ubuntu provides [12:03] there, you click on "Supported Products", and look for your graphics card [12:04] yes, i suggest that you boot without "pci=nommconf" if you can, and then try to install the 550 driver from additional drivers, and reboot again [12:05] then, if there are still issues, run journalctl -kb0 -p4 |& nc termbin.com 9999 and post the url it printed [12:07] hey tomreyn , now i restarted (which means pci=nommconf was not applied this time) and it switched me to Nouveau. It seems to work a bit better, but still no display ligthing feature [12:08] hmm, not sure why it would use nouveau rather than the proprietary driver if that's installed. [12:08] But now I was able to switch to 550 [12:09] with this somewhat recent hardware, you probably should use one of the nvidia drivers, no nouveau [12:09] It says I need to restart, so wish me good luck if I'm not able to boot :| [12:09] good luck [12:09] if you want this to be easier and more reliable in the future, buy amd or intel gpus next time [12:10] tomreyn, it works now. Has anyone installed 6.11 kernel into 24.04 LTS release via the APT? I'm in need for it, and yet it's still 10-11 days until 24.04.2 release which is supposed to have it available... [14:59] hid3: kernel versions are not usually updated mid-release cycle. is there something someone can help troubleshoot for you? [15:00] pragmaticenigma: it's been announced that 24.04.2 in fact will have 6.11 kernel. And I really need AMD p-state core performance boost which 6.11 supports. Not doable on 6.8.0 [15:01] I think those "introduced mid-release cycle" kernels are called HWE but I might be confusing something... [15:02] it's simply not available via apt yet [15:03] yeah, checked that already :) [15:03] point release means that all the ISOs will be packed at that day. So one can expect actual packages be available in repositories a bit earlier, right? [15:04] no [15:04] all gets released the same day? [15:07] hid3: Honestly, this channel is run by volunteers, the release order or operations is determined by Canonical. What would not make sense is pre-releasing packages before the scheduled release date. [15:09] well, from my previous experience with Ubuntu, point releases are no magic. Just a collection of freshly updated packages (which have already been available via APT) included in a refreshed ISO. So that if you do a fresh installation, you won't have to spend significant time downloading/upgrading gigabytes of packages... Not sure how that's done with kernels, introduced mid-release [15:10] !hwe | hid3 [15:10] hid3: The Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack [15:12] hid3: https://ubuntu.com/kernel/lifecycle [15:13] hid3: as leftyfb notes, if you want the updated kernel, you will probably want to install the HWE option. [15:13] yeah, I'm aware of that [15:15] the link I posted shows you that kernel versions do not change... 18.04 only received the 5.4 kernel via HWE, otherwise it remained on 4.15 through its entire lifecycle. [15:16] Ubuntu 24.04.2 will have the 6.11 kernel, likely before Feb 13th [15:17] but is that only if HWE in installed? [15:17] on 22.04 (LTS) I also managed to install 6.8.0 HWE [15:18] pragmaticenigma: yes, you'll need to be running the HWE kernel [15:34] Hi [15:35] How to fix this issue (boot is lower space) [15:36] Cryptainer: huh? [22:45] hmmm [22:45] pragmaticenigma: Gimp, inkscape, and DaVinci Resolve [22:46] pragmaticenigma: it's not a showstopper, it's just annoying having roughly 2/3 of the font selector taken up by squiggle fonts [22:46] I can understand the frustration [22:47] gordonjcp: it can be a "necessary" hassle, yes I get it in hmm LibreOffice apps like Calc or Draw or Write, however instead of all that scrolling, you can just type the 1st letter of what you're looking for, most "dialog boxes" have a way to filter the entries, unless your app dialog doesn't [22:47] I found the same link that leftyfb suggested, and while that has tamed it a little [22:47] a bunch of them still reappear after updating, and most of the Noto ones have never left [22:47] I get that the whole point of Noto is to cover every linguistic unicode point [22:48] gordonjcp: you can alleviate the scrolling by simply typing the 1st letter of the font you're after [22:48] I think the extra languages are within a single font package. Some applications are better at displaying the primary font family in the system language, while other enumerate all of them out explicately. Sort of like having 8 fonts show up for one font-family covering combinations of bold, italic, underline, etc text [22:49] but at least in Libreoffice and WPS and other apps, the font list has a filter for it [22:49] yeah, I've never used Libreoffice [22:49] not sure what I'd ever use it for [22:49] it's like some cheesy text editor thing? [22:49] heheh [22:49] oh, it's got spreadsheets too [22:50] gordonjcp: is a great office package, is not cheesy, and very Microsoft Office compatible [22:50] bprompt: not something I'd find a use for tbh [22:50] gordonjcp: roger that, I do, it works very well, well, I mostly use Calc and Draw [22:51] I do everything in plain text [22:51] DooM can now be played in LibreOffice Calc [22:51] oerheks: I am not surprised [22:52] bprompt: if I have to deal with "spreadsheets" then 99% of the time it's because someone says "yeah we've got that in a database" but it's actually an Excel file [22:52] bprompt: so I get them to give me a CSV export of it and put it in a real database [22:53] gordonjcp: heheh, a spreadsheet is can be an "arrayed" database, cells can and are treated as members of a range or set [22:54] so I can see the definition overlap [22:54] bprompt: actually believe it or not in Google Docs you can do SQL queries on a spreadsheet [22:55] I've never actually done this for serious use, but it's hilarious you can get that far [22:57] gordonjcp: spreadsheets do DB of kind, they have some functions/formulas that return a number of cells on a query [23:30] Hello :) 24.04 I want to give my machine to my neighbor. How can I change my login so that I am no longer the sole owner, but she is. i.e She would become root & sole user. Is it as simple as changing my login in the passwd & shadow files? Or is there an official method or how do I this? I won't be around to help her later, so I need to get it right the first time. TY! [23:32] yes, in settings > users > your user [23:32] apb1963: go to settings -< users ... add a new user and make it an admin [23:33] i read that OEM install is not available in 24.04, that would create an install where on first boot of the new user he/she needs to create an user name + password https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu_OEM_Installer_Overview [23:36] apb1963: would recommend a fresh install. a lot easier, and less chance you forgot to delete something [23:36] OK, I should have been ready to do it, I'm not... need to boot it first. Sounds simple enough I suppose. We'll see. Thank you! [23:38] pragmaticenigma, Yeah, I was afraid that might be the case. I went through the do-release process - twice! So reinstalling is definitely not preferable and I'd have to do it with her present and it just makes it harder. [23:39] what do you mean do-release twice? [23:39] that's an ugly install [23:40] yeah... apb1963 for sure that is something I would not give to my friend as is. A fresh install from a freshly downloaded install image is what you should be doing [23:40] I upgraded from 18.04... oh wait.. I think it's only 22.04 I don't know, I stopped upgrading when it didn't offer any more releases. :) [23:40] apb1963: I would highly recommend a fresh install using the oem install which allows you to install without creating a user. On the next boot it'll ask for the user info which she can do [23:41] if it's not available in the GRUB menu while booting the desktop iso, then you can try https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-desktop-provision/blob/main/docs/oem-provisioning-24_04_1.md#using-the-flutter-installer-without-modifying-the-livecd [23:41] yeah, traditionally I always put the new install on it's own clean partition. I thought I'd see if things had improved in the last 20 years or so :) [23:43] apb1963: it's not a matter of improved, as much as a fresh install means no one has to guess if there is a residual configs or programs that could come back to haunt. Ubuntu is forever changing, a fresh install ensures the latest and greatest. Upgrades mean that older configurations and options are retained and may create issues in the future [23:44] Well, I guess today isn't the day. I just wanted to make room and get rid of the machine. Guess I'll have to wait until I can absorb all this info. [23:45] Thank you most kindly ladies? & gentlemen!
