xubuntu65d | How do I go about installing Firefox ESR on xubuntu? I am new to Linux as a whole. I just downloaded the ESR bz2 File from Mozilla, I googled and it seems to be something akin to a zip that I need to extract. People recommended I try bzip2, when I tried to install that from terminal it says its already installed, however I can't seem to find it | 20:13 |
xubuntu65d | anywhere. | 20:13 |
tomreyn | xubuntu65d: packages (like bzip2) can provide executable commands (none, one, or multiple). one fo the commands the bzip2 package provides is bunzip2, this would help you there. | 20:16 |
tomreyn | fo -> of | 20:17 |
xubuntu65d | So bzip2 is only used through the terminal? Are there any alternatives with a graphical interface? | 20:17 |
xubuntu65d | So bzip2 is only used through the terminal? Are there any alternatives with a graphical interface? (Thanks for the help btw, was already pulling some of my hair out lol) | 20:18 |
tomreyn | yes, you are looking for a graphical file archiving utility then. xfce provide sone, i just forgot its name | 20:18 |
tomreyn | so the "thunar archive plugin" is one way apparently | 20:19 |
tomreyn | thunar being your graphical file browser | 20:19 |
tomreyn | other than that you could use file-roller or Xarchiver, i think. | 20:20 |
tomreyn | https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/archive | 20:20 |
tomreyn | i expect xubuntu to provide one graphical utility to extract / unpack common archive formats (such as bzip2) out of the box. maybe not if you chose to do a minimal installation | 20:21 |
xubuntu65d | Yeah might have to do with minimal installation... not quite what I had in mind when I picked that | 20:21 |
xubuntu65d | Guess I'll do a fresh installation with a regular installation tomorrow then. Maybe second times the charm :D | 20:22 |
tomreyn | i think you can just move from the minimal install to a full install by installing another package, probably xubuntu-desktop | 20:23 |
tomreyn | the reverse is harder | 20:23 |
xubuntu65d | Mind if I share another problem I encountered with you? | 20:24 |
tomreyn | package xfce4-goodies should provide the thunar file archive management plgin, whre you can right-click on an archive file in the thunar file browser and select to unpack it | 20:24 |
tomreyn | xubuntu65d: not at all, that's what this channel is for | 20:25 |
xubuntu65d | So under Settings > Display I tried to set the refresh rate to 120hz, as that is what my monitor supports. However when I select and apply it, the top fifth of my screen turns black and isn't responsive. | 20:27 |
xubuntu65d | is that just something I will have to live with when using ubuntu or is there an underlying issue that can be fixed | 20:27 |
tomreyn | hmm, i'm afraid i would not know this. it's something you could report as a bug, though (which requires creating an sso.ubuntu.com account, which takes about 2-3 minutes). | 20:29 |
tomreyn | !bug | 20:29 |
ubottu | If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its official !flavors, please report it using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs. | 20:29 |
xubuntu65d | Alright, I'll see if the problem persists on my fresh install tomorrow. Thank you for your time! Have a nice evening/night :D | 20:30 |
tomreyn | the package to report a bug against may be xfwm4, i think so, this would be ubuntu-bug xfwm4 | 20:31 |
zandok | hi everybody | 21:31 |
