DarkiplierI had nuked my ubuntu but I fixed it00:22
Darkiplierbasically there's this package liboss4-salsa-asound2, I tried installing it and then it nuked the desktop environment and many other packages(such as hexchat)00:23
Darkiplieriirc it didn't even had a yes/no prompt before automatically nuking everything.00:23
Darkiplierit's definitely a bug if a package conflicts with half the system and the nuking is automatic00:24
Darkiplierbut I fixed it though00:24
rboxnothing magically breaks everything00:26
Darkipliermaybe a buggy package with "*" in the conflicts variable i guess00:29
Darkiplierbut I fixed it so whatever i guess00:30
rboxlol00:30
Darkiplierjust wanted to report the bug00:30
rboxwhat you just did was not reporting a bug00:31
rboxit was making hysterical impossible claims00:31

disgruntI have a question on the long term support releases...  I'm currently running .24 not .24.1 or .24.2...  Do I have to upgrade to .24.2 to retain support?01:37
=== mark_ is now known as winged_mark
rboxwhat does "support" mean to you01:43
disgruntSecurity updates.01:44
rboxtheres is no independent action to upgrade to .1 or .201:45
rboxjust do apt upgrade01:45
rboxyou get all the pacakges01:45
disgruntrbox:  No, I do that manually...01:45
rboxwhat?01:45
disgruntrbox:  apt upgrade does not give me .1 or .2 just the latest ".0".01:46
disgruntWhich hasn't been getting many apt updates.01:46
rboxdunno what you did to break your system then01:47
rboxi just was on a system saying 24.04.1, i did apt update and apt upgrade, now it says 24.04.201:47
disgruntrbox:  I got rid of SNAP for starters... :D01:48
disgruntAnd God knows what the NSA has done.01:48
rboxwtf...01:48
disgrunt(Don't ask)01:48
rboxlol01:48
disgrunt:D01:48
disgruntThanks for the info.01:49
disgruntWhen I can I'll do a clean install but that's problematic because I dual-boot and need a TPM encrypted root partition.01:50
disgruntAnd I'm still debating the SNAP issue.01:50
disgruntI both support and don't it.01:51
disgruntI guess I'll ask about that...  Can anyone give me technical info on snap on ubuntu such as which packages use it or don't and info on that?01:52
rboxhuh?01:52
disgruntUbuntu is trying to switch to SNAP or parts.  I'm curious how that works technically (for security and compatibility reasons).01:53
rboxwhat do you mean "how it works"01:53
disgruntJust some insight into how SNAP and apt work together, how I can tell what packages are snap and apt and how I can update SNAP stuff from the command line.01:54
disgruntJust general stuff.01:54
disgruntI'm familiar with apt from debian but am stuck using Ubuntu (which isn't bad) but I know nothing of SNAP or how it is implemented in Ubuntu.01:54
rboxwhen you do an apt show firefox, it says "Transitional package - firefox -> firefox snap"01:55
rboxif you wanat to know how to use snap you can read the documentation01:55
disgruntrbox:  That's the problem.  There is no documentation.01:56
disgruntI don't want to know how to use it as much as the technical details of it.01:57
rboxlol01:57
rboxthen read the code01:57
disgruntThat's absurd.01:57
disgruntCode is not documentation.01:57
disgruntI looked again and found some of what I want but I'm still concerned about the internals of snap for security reasons.01:59
disgruntThere's no documention on that.01:59
disgruntOr I can't find it on the web with a quick search.01:59
disgruntrbox:  Sorry for being obtuse and confusing and a half-assed newb.02:00
disgrunt(I have my reasons)02:00
ravagehttps://snapcraft.io/docs02:17
disgruntravage:  I'm more interested in the internals.02:29
disgruntravage:  But thank you... Or did I overlook that?02:29
disgruntinternals being not how to create a package, use it, etc... But the internals of the system itself.02:30

disgruntravage:  If most Open Source software didn't have development documentation it wouldn't get worked on.03:26

newtohomeserversI installed Ubuntu server and a few things today on a intel NUC i had hanging around.... It went great and i had plenty of disk space so I decided to include a desktop environment and loaded up KDE now when I'm in KDE my wifi menu shows no networks and my internet works on and off. It worked fine for installation. I'm at a loss.04:53

ximonis there some sort of rolling release ubuntu?15:33
ximonI want to be on the ubuntu testing so I dont have to install new ubuntu version all the time15:34
ximonbtw I hope ubuntu is not throwing away x11 like fedora did15:34
ximonthat would be really sad15:34
ximonfedora has not even anylonger a working cinnamon iso15:34
ograsince tehz ubuntu release cycle is designed around breaking in the beginning of a fresh cycle you will experience bad breakage usually, but yes you can switch aqll your sources.list.d entries to "devel" instead of the release name15:35
ograthat way you permanently stay on the devel release15:35
ograhttps://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-as-rolling-release/14751/2015:36
ximonogra how much are the odds that everything will be fine for me? staying on devel with all of you guys when I only use a desktop for playing games and libreoffice and telegram?15:36
ogra(though note that ubuntu uses deb822 sources.list files nowadays so this is a bit different now)15:36
ash_worksinot sure how I got to this point, but my FF icon has no "running" indicator (term?) and opens a new window when clicked, rather than one of the 6 windows that are open which I can only access via ctrl+tab15:37
ximonlike are the odds that something breaks higher than in for example arch linux?15:37
ograximon, very high ... at the beginning of a fresh cycle Ubuntu syncs the whole archive from debian unstable ... at that time there can be a lot of breakage ... then there are ttransitions like ... switching from python2 to python3 or a new libc where a loit of packages are involved15:38
ograsince you will not fix 1000s of packages in bulk but rather one by one and this takes time there is breakage expected15:39
ximonoh so ubuntu is actually debian?15:39
ograno, ubuntu used debians source packages15:39
ograbut builds them differently and adjusts and changes things in them15:40
ogra(and there are Ubuntus own developed things too on top of this)15:40
ximonhttps://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntucinnamon/releases/plucky/release/ is this the iso I want?15:40
ogras/used/uses/15:40
ograif you want the cinnamon desktop then yes15:40
ximonye ofc I want cinnamon what else could I want15:41
ximon:D15:41
ograofficial ubuntu releases are on releases.ubuntu.com otherwise ...15:41
ximoncinnamon is the only desktop which is far away from this wayland hype15:41
ogralol15:41
ximonkde and gnome already shot them selves on the moon15:41
ximonhopefully they survive15:42
ograthat "hype" is ratrher the default nowadays15:42
ograXorg is largely unmaintained upstream15:42
ximonogra it has been for 1 year now on gnome and kde15:42
ograso you wont see many fixes there15:42
ximonits a hype imo15:42
ograUbuntu uses wayland since 6y as a default now15:43
ximonogra unfortunately I tried already this wayland stuff it turned out it doesnt work on processors like mine :D15:43
ximon800 mHz is a joke for wayland15:43
ogra(with the exception of nvidia driven desktops where it only switched with the last LTS)15:43
ograwayland has nothing to do with your CPU ... only with your GPU15:43
ograit will run fine on 800MHz if you haver proper GPU drivers15:44
ximonogra what I ment to say (do you know what throtteling means)?15:44
ograyes15:44
ximongood15:44
ximonwayland throttles my processor because it overheats15:44
ograbut wayölanmd wouldnt cause any thottling when it can properly use the GPU15:44
ximonthere fore I have massive frame drops on dota 215:45
ograwell, that points to an issue with youre GPU drivers15:45
ograonly if your GPU doesnt properly work it will fall back to CPU based rendering15:45
ximonogra nah the gpu is fine, because when I use cpu power to unleash the power of my processor it works15:45
ximonbut on x11 it works with only 800 mHz15:46
ximonso I will continue using x11 ;)15:46
ograI have plenty of customers using even 600MHz CPUs on professional kiopsk systemsa with Ubuntu and wayland, your CPU has nothing to do with this unless your system falls back to using the llvmpipe driver (whish measn software rendering)15:47
ximonogra I dont know the details I just have found out that throtteling is hard on wayland15:48
* ogra glareas at his fingers ... so many typos :P15:48
ograthrottling happens when the CPU is overloaded .... properly set up wayylanmd will not touch your CPU ever15:48
ximonogra but then xwayland is maybe shit15:49
ximonidk what protocol dota 2 is based on15:49
ximon;)15:49
ograif your kernel sets the proper drm driver for your GPU and wayland uses it you will not see any impact on the CPU15:49
ximonogra all I can say for now playing games on wayland sucks15:50
ximon;)15:50
ximonplaying games on wayland forces me buying new hardware15:50
ograxywayland e,mulates Xorg on top of wayland ... though same thing that uses whatever driver wayland uses underneath15:50
ximonwhich is what I will not do15:50
ximonimagine every year a new protocol every year people need to buy new hardware because it sucks on other protocolsß15:51
ximonXD15:51
ogragames are a totally different thing and usually depend on the correct mesa drivers15:51
ximonif that happens I surely will leave linux for windows 10 xd15:52
ograthey usually ciurcumvent both Xorg and wayland and talk directly to the GPU through mesa and the kernels drm driver15:52
ograanyway, we'Re massivel offtopic15:52
ogra*massively15:52
ximonogra just lets hope cinnamon (linux mint) finds a way to make hardware on wayland work15:53
ogra(you wont ... windows 10 is dead and gone :) you'd have to go to win 11 or newer)15:53
ximonthey annonced wayland wont be finished before 202815:54
ograif you want to go on diuscussing we can move to #ubuntu-discuss ... we're way to offtopic for the support channel though15:54
ximonogra did Ubuntu userbase really shrink that much to that shiny sketchy weird distros like arch opensuspect redhat?15:55
ximonI really dont like these shiny distros anylonger because they all go in direction to abandon good stuff15:57
ximonexcept for debian. I mean I saw debian for example has put runit in their repository that is a huge process15:57
ograas i said, we can continue in a different channel, lets not smap this one with unrelated stuff15:57
ogra*spam15:57
ximonogra do you think ubuntu might also implement runit maybe :D15:58
ximonjust like debian did15:58
ximongod bless america ubuntu still supports x11 cinnamon16:04
ximonogra there is this plucky puffin, what do I have to do after plucky puffin is not maintained any longer then I go to devel version?16:06
ximon25.04 "Plucky Puffin" Maintained until late-2025. Ships with Cinnamon 6.4.8. Contains newer software and more features.16:06
ximonwhat is the best way to get steam?16:07
ograsudo snap install steam16:07
ograif you use a non-LTS version like 25.04 you will have to upgarde to 25.10 and onwards16:07
ximonogra blueman had an error can I uninstall blueman?16:08
ograno idea, i havent seen cinnamon since a decade16:09
ximonso you are already on the malware wayland stuff ? :D16:09
ximonsorry but that joke had to be16:09
ograwell, for me wayland is more responsive, faster and has less bugs ... I do have an old desktop that runs 22.04 with Xorg due to the nvidia card it has though16:10
ximonhow to stop bluetooth from running?16:12
ximonI dont have bluetooth I guess blueman might be related to bluetooth16:12
ograsudo systemctl stop bluetooth16:12
* ogra has to go now ... 16:13
ximonstopping did not work :D16:13
PeGaSuSit did work for me. you may also want to `sudo systemctl disable bluetooth.service` if you don't have a Bluetooth adapter16:15
ximonlawl the nemo filemanager crashed I get everywhere error codes16:16
ximonxd16:16
PeGaSuSor just `sudo systemctl disable bluetooth.service --now`, which disables it and stops it in one go16:18
ximonPeGaSuS does snap packages to more disk activity than normal pkgs16:25
ximons/to/do16:25
PeGaSuSno idea. never compared them. I'm not a power user, though16:26
ximonPeGaSuS well the only reason that I dont like wayland is that it makes my processor wanting to use 3000 mHz instead of 800 mHz16:27

ximon?17:33
lotuspsychje!amd | ximon17:35
ubottuximon: On Ubuntu, AMD's official Linux graphics driver "amdgpu" is automatically loaded for matching hardware. Very old cards use driver "radeon" (r300, r600) instead. See the !man pages for X options, "modinfo -p <graphics-driver>" for kernel parameters. Both drivers are open source and integrate with MESA and !DRI. Drivers "amdgpu-pro", "fglrx" and "ati" are not supported here.17:35

ximonwayland somehow fails me hard17:43

ximonogra or it is because wayland cant do 60fps17:45
ximonmy monitor is 60 hz17:45

martinrameHi, I'm struggling to connect to an nfs server installed on a WSL2 (Ubuntu on Windows), from FreeBSD.18:41
gnubiohi. Anybody familiar with installing the infinoted (gobby)?18:41
martinrameI opened the ports using netsh interface portproxy add... and also with the windows firewall18:42
martinrameI also tested ports 111 and 2049 with telnet (from the FreeBSD side) and they are open. Is there another needed port?18:42
martinrameBut when I run: showmount -e ip_of_wsl18:42
martinrameit hangs for a while, and retuns RPC: Port mapper failure, showmount: can't do exports rpc18:43
martinrameBTW, from the windows host I can mount the nfs share without issues.18:43

antonispgsguys how do i enable HW acceleration on firefox snap? using 24.04 and in about:support it says HW decoding is unsupported21:03
dob1sorry for my complains hours ago, but imho it's very bad that after an upgrade to LTS (released months ago) network manager is not working and dhcp too, so you have no lan/internet connection21:07
