webchat36Software Updater crashes when updates are deselected.  This was previously resolved after being reported as bug 2041831.  My bug reporter is not working.  How can this problem be reported?01:00

webchat36Regrettably I have no desire to create an Ubuntu One account I will most likely not use again.  After I ran ubuntu-bug, the graphical problem solver reported that no upgrade log was present (probably fresh install) and I think sent nothing.  Terminal reported insufficient permissions regarding a couple of journal files. I've updated the software01:36
webchat36many times, so there should be a log.  Not sure why the bug reported is not working.01:36
rotaroHello. Any recommendations for a graphical image viewer app which has an "explorer" like view - as in, can show resizable thumbnails so I can decide which images to keep / delete?02:37

jp__hi, i'm looking for some software i used to have12:55
lotuspsychjewhats it about jp__12:55
jp__oh sorry, another window pinged and i forgot about this one12:56
jp__it was a shell utility that allowed you to make multiple session on one window12:57
jp__also one that was used together with it that gave the shell more colors13:01
lotuspsychjecolours like syntax highlighting jp__ ?13:02
ograbyobou ?13:02

jp__yeahyeah13:03
jp__thats it13:04
jp__byobu13:04
ogra(I thinnk this is sadly dead upstream)13:04
jp__you mean in ubuntu repos?13:04
jp__or just in general13:04
jp__i dont know what upstream means13:05
ograwell, ubuntu packages other people software into a distribution13:05
ograupstream is "the other people" that originally create such software13:05
jp__ah, well i mean i dont really need updates13:06
jp__it worked just great the way it was already13:06
ograif an upstrem stops maintaining their sotware and abandons it, ubuntu can not really keep it alive for a long time13:06
jp__unless parts stop working13:06
ograright13:07
ograI fear byobu is one of these packages that have no actual owner anymore and I think it is planned to be dropped from the ubuntu archive eventually13:08
ogra(unless someone steps up and takes over the upstream maintenance)13:08
jp__the byobu website looks great though13:10
jp__what would entail maintaning it upstream?13:10
ograthere is some discussion about the future of byobu in https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-server-seed-changes-for-25-10/6155213:10
ogra(or the "non future" rather)13:10
ogramaintaining the website is only one minor part ...13:11
ograit is rather about fixing bugs in the application itself, maintaining the application code, closing security holes etc13:11
jp__doesn't seem too hard, it doesn't do much so it wouldn't have security issues?13:12
jp__I dunno, i don't think i am advanced enough to maintain packages13:12
lotuspsychjeisnt there like alternates?13:12
jp__or maybe it is easier than i think13:13
ogralotuspsychje, yes, that is why i pointed to that server discussion13:13

jp__htop is good, but it shows really long command names so long i can't see what it is18:39
jp__my server runs 30+ python scripts at the same time18:40
jp__is there a way to shorten te command names to only filename instead of the whole command path?18:40

aaronm04Hi all, I have a Dell Precision 5680 with a MIPI camera. After a recent update of Kubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, it stopped working. Is this a known issue? Can anyone help me fix it? Thanks19:51
aaronm04Oh and I switched over from the Intel OEM ppa to the Dell ppa for the ipu6 packages months ago because it broke and that fixed it at the time. This is a recurring thing :(19:52
ropedthe output of systemctl looks scary and too long, how do I debloat the list of system startup services a bit? by brute forcing through reading the details about each service or is there a better approach?19:53
bpromptroped: hmmm  you can stop most services with "sudo systemctl stop [NAME OF SERVICE HERE]"19:59
tomreynaaronm04: making gaming laptops or mobile workstations work properly with all features can be cumbersome, and can involve manual intervention, unless ubuntu is fully supported on it by the vendor.20:03
aaronm04Ah I see. It's just frustrating that it _was_ working20:04
tomreynaaronm04: https://github.com/intel/ipu6-drivers explains how you can build those drivers on your system, using dkms. using third party software makes your system more difficult to support.20:04
aaronm04Ok thanks tomreyn20:05
ropedbprompt, I know how to stop and how to disable services, I'd like to learn to figure out which one to stop without killing the system20:05
ropedfor example I for sure don't need CUPS, this desktop will never print anything20:05
tomreynaaronm04: have you checked whether there is a version of ubuntu which dell supports on this hardware? unless you're happy to fiddle with drivers, i would suggest using this while support lasts.20:06
aaronm04I haven't. I'll check20:07
tomreynaaronm04: https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-uk/product/precision-16-5680-laptop/drivers lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS20:10
tomreynwhich likely means that they support this ubuntu version (only)20:11
tomreynand you may need to use their recovery image to regain dell support for it.20:11
tomreyn(or try to find out how they've configured this Ubuntu OEM installer and replicate this on your existing or fresh 22.04 installation)20:12
jp__how do i maximize a shell window over my 2 screens?20:17

JanCaaronm04: there is an intel-ipu6-dkms package in Ubuntu 24.0420:24
JanCoh, and there are ipu6 module packages for it too20:25
=== realies9346 is now known as realies934
JanCso installing linux-modules-ipu6-generic (if you use the generic kernel) should work20:25
tomreynfor *this* part of the haardware (not neccessarily others)20:26
JanC(should probably work, without any external PPAs)20:26
JanCwell, that was the question  :)20:26
JanCI'd always check standard distro stuff first before messing with 3rd party repos?20:28
JanCand considering it came with 22.04 originally, this isn't brand new hardware anymore20:29
aaronm04tomreyn: wow, I don't know if it's worth it to switch to 22.04 since this is a work laptop20:38
aaronm04Thanks for researching though20:38
aaronm04JanC: yeah I think the next step is uninstalling all the packages from the Dell PPA and then trying that20:40
FKAShinobi__I need a more recent version of nodejs than in the archives. I did install it and npm. I noticed that I can get newer versions of node and npm from npm itself. If I globally install the newer nodejs and npm will that break anything?21:06
youndercurl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.40.3/install.sh | bash then nvm install 22 should give node -v -> v22.17.121:09
ropedFKAShinobi__, you need a more recent version of Node.js for project development or a newer system Node.js?21:15
=== calwig- is now known as calwig
aaronm04younder: note that if you install nvm it'll add a delay each time you start bash. If that bothers you, you can take the lines nvm added out of your .bashrc and put them in a separate file that you source when you need the newer node.js: "source loadnvm.rc"21:54
FKAShinobi__roped, development. I'm new to the front-end stuff, but I just found out about nvm and I (think) I have it running.22:00
