kankushtawesome03:02
kankushtthank you very much for answer03:02
kankushthere is the question: is it good idea to delete windows from a very new laptop?03:03
kankushtthen replace it for ubuntu03:03
Sean_McGthats personal choice03:03
Bashing-omkankusht: Culture shock can be tough to adjust to .03:04
Sean_McGbut if you dont have restore media, then reinstalling windows might be impossible03:04
kankushtI see, so it means that it doesn't matter if I have windows or not in my new laptop03:04
bazhangkankusht, try ubuntu in a vm first03:05
Sean_McGbazhang++03:05
bazhangkankusht, you can even try using ubuntu in a full screen virtual machine such as virtual box03:06
Sean_McGVurtualBox is free if you need a vm provider03:06
Jonno_FTWhello, I'm trying to install amdgpu-pro on 16.10 but I get an error after rebooting03:06
kankushtI use ubuntu studio on my desktop, but I have been reading a lot and I think I have some doubts about OS03:06
bazhangwhat doubts kankusht03:06
Sean_McGso then maybe a VM is a good starting point for you03:06
kankushtI read about bios updates, it seems that it is impossible to update it without linux03:07

bazhangkankusht, try in ##windows for those issues03:08

greyrabbitbut i'am using BackBox03:08
kankushtI'm not really sure, but I really want to get rid of windows forever03:08
Sean_McGyes it is rare to get BIOs updates for Linux, but lately I have found most motherboards have BIOS updaters right in their UEFI screens03:08
bazhanggreyrabbit, then get help from the backbox people its not supported here03:08
rocketbombkankusht: updating bios is not something you need to do if system is working fine03:09
bazhangkankusht, you seem to pollling asking about whether to drop windows etc, thats entirely a personal choice and not really on top ic here03:09
Sean_McGaye, always look at the README for a BIOS update to see if it _actually solves an issue you are having_03:09
kankushtinteresting, so the bios is not that important then?03:09
bazhangkankusht, of course it is important03:10
Sean_McGit _can_ be important03:10
kankushtsorry I mean updating bios03:10
bazhangagain kankusht getting help with bios update in windows is for ##windows , so ask there03:11
nomicwill a file written to a cd (disk burner) .. within ubuntu, be readble by xp03:11
nomicquestion03:12
bazhangkankusht, if you want to ask the poll type should I go full ubuntu then try the chat channel, #ubuntu-offtopic03:12

kankushtwell, I have one year using ubuntu on my desktop I never have updated my bios so I believe it should be fine03:12

tpw_ruleshello. i need an old version of the package nvidia-graphics-drivers-370 from https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa . any idea where i might find it?04:42
Sean_McGtpw_rules: apt-cache search nvidia04:44

Sean_McGerm, they have 361 and older versions04:45
tpw_rulesno not that04:45
tpw_rulesan earlier dot release04:45
Sean_McGI doubt they do that04:45
tpw_rulesi mean it was an earlier dot release a few days ago04:45
Sean_McGoh, then maybe search on launchpad?04:46
Sean_McGand then download the appropriate .deb files and use dpkg to install them04:46
OerHeksolder versions than 370.28 are removed.04:48
OerHeksbut your nvidia updates was days ago, and current updates give problems, so it is likely not the nvidia driver that is your issue.04:49
tpw_ruleswell i just turn on my system for the first time in a couple weeks. but yeah i think you're right04:49
tpw_rulesit's a really bizarre issue so i'm just trying to undo the things that got done04:49

zh1cfhowlett, then after it i should enable lts again? what do i gain from a lts and non-lts?11:27
cfhowlettzh1, 5 years support for LTS.  9 months for non-LTS.11:27
zh1cfhowlett, in average how much time would take me to upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10?11:28
cfhowlettzh1, completely depends on you ISP speed11:28
zh1if it's like 4mb/ps11:29
zh1its the time it gets to get the iso?11:29
cfhowlettzh1, torrents is a faster download and you can cleanly install.11:29
zh1cfhowlett, yes i know, but i'm remotelly on the pc11:30
cfhowlettzh1, LOL11:30
zh1cfhowlett, or do you mean remote torrent?11:30
cfhowlettzh1, get your calculator out.  .iso size/4mb per second11:30

=== rany is now known as IRChax0r2016
cfhowlettif the only reason you're upgrading is that you "should", I strongly suggest you stay with LTS.  Fewer headaches and a more polished experience.  LTS are meant for long-term use.  non-LTS are more experimental11:33
zh1cfhowlett, but can't i enable lts again after?11:34

Ben64it's not a switch11:34
ducassezh1: but you will need to reinstall to get back on an lts release11:35
Ben64if you upgrade to 16.10, you'd have to upgrade to 17.04, 17.10, then finally 18.04, or reinstall 16.0411:35

cfhowletttrue ^^^11:35
ducassezh1: of course not11:35
zh1ducasse, i dont get why i need to reinstall if i upgrade and switch to lts11:37
ducassezh1: you can upgrade to 16.10, but if you then decide that an lts release is better for you then you will need to reinstall 16.0411:37
cfhowlettzh1, LTS > LTS is one path.  otherwise you can only jump from one release to the very next release.  if you forget to do that within the time limit, you must clean install the next verssion11:37

tomreynrskumar: this suggests that the kernel update is not the source of the issues you are seeing, but something else is. i'm afraid i can't tell which other configuration changes (you made) or software updates may be causing it. you could review your kernel logs in /var/log/ to see how suspend / resume failed, then search the web for this error message. this may bring up a bug report and a workaround.14:07

Specifically, I'm running ./do_debian_package.sh xenial 2016112701 local master, and it does build a deb package. However, the patches inside the debian/patches directory inside the source tree are *not* being applied prior to compilation and the creation of the package. Would someone20:13

DVA5912Jordan_U: but aside from the redundancy is there any other real reason to stack LVM and Raid together20:14
Jordan_UDVA5912: As opposed to using RAID but not using LVM you mean?20:15
DVA5912Jordan_U: yes20:15
DVA5912Jordan_U: because it feels like just another pof20:16
Jordan_UDVA5912: Well, I assume that you will want at least two volumes on your array, the volume containing your root filesystem, and the volume containing swap. You could make two partitions on each of the member drives and end up having two arrays, or you could just have one array with LVM on top. If you go with the latter you can easily resize your swap or get rid of it if you want more space for your root20:17
Jordan_Ufilesystem.20:17
Jordan_UDVA5912: Another solution to that problem would be to add a partition table on top of the array. That would work, but 1: People often get confused when there are nested partition tables and 2: LVM is more flexible than a partition table while not incurring any performance penalty (unless you use features like snapshots, which you can simply choose not to do).20:19
DVA5912Jordan_U: So this is really looking to boil down to simplicity. I agree, putting a patition table on top of raid could become confusing for the next sysadmin. You are the first one to actualy make this seem clearer, Thank you!20:21

andrea1994Hi20:58
andrea1994what is ubuntu-meeting channel?20:58
andrea1994what is meetology?20:58
CRCurselfI am reading about dynamic routing and routed/gated daemons. I want to make sure the information I'm reading is relevant to the system I'm using.20:59
CRCurselfBecause it said routed/gated are common daemons found in most TCP/IP implementations, want to verify it's part of mine as well.20:59
CRCurselfI may be framing my question improperly, so basic guidance would be very helpful at this point.21:01

Seveasandrea1994: #ubuntu-meeting is where certain Ubuntu communitu teams hold their IRC-based meetings. meetingology is a utility bot that helps with logging the meetings.21:04
SeveasCRCurself: unless you set one up, no routing daemon will be in use. By default you only have a default route to your router.21:05
jatt!info quagga | CRCurself21:11
ubottuCRCurself: quagga (source: quagga): BGP/OSPF/RIP routing daemon. In component main, is optional. Version 1.0.20160315-2ubuntu0.1 (yakkety), package size 1360 kB, installed size 6345 kB21:11
CRCurselfI'm aware of that one, thanks. It actually appears I lack a basic understanding of what a daemon is, so I'm reading up on that. Thanks for the responses nonetheless.21:13

BlueProtomanStrange problem with my laptop's keyboard.  http://bit.ly/2gzO2en  A few keys I have to press harder/a few times in a row for them to register, but then once the key is "active" it responds normally.  The key itself doesn't feel sticky, so might this be a software/driver/BIOS issue?  (Ubuntu 16.04 with the Prema BIOS)21:43

arm1eCan someone please help me with wifi issues on intel 726021:47
pseudo_patata: Ubuntu maintains a repository of software, but not all software on the planet. As a general thing, when software is closed source (i.e. proprietary) they can't/won't ship it. In this case, I'm pretty sure you can download a Ubuntu (debian) package directly from the telegram site21:48
arm1ethere is a snap package for telegram21:48
patatathanks you pseudo_21:49
patataarm1e, what is a snap package?21:50
pseudo_patata: np :) Generally, check if anyone maintains PPA's (Personal Package Archive)'s for what you want - it's basically like extending the software available for install via apt-get. Failing that, try snap packages, Ubuntu's new attempt at letting people make isolated little packages that can be installed onto many linux distributions21:51

mccanyone know how to write pure binary code ( 0 , 1 )  and run it on ubuntu  ?22:11
pseudo_mcc: That's not exactly how it works22:13
MDTech-ushello22:14
MDTech-usso22:14
pseudo_mcc: Basically. You have programming languages (like C/C++) which are translated from program text (source code) by a program (compiler) into a binary format. Simplifying a few things, that binary format corresponds to assembly instructions, which you *could* write yourself. Assembly instructions vary by chip, so writing the same (logical) code for your phone and PC would differ since the former is probably an ARM and the latter an X86 chip.22:15

KingsyTHANKS22:16
MDTech-usI currently have Windows installed on a 250GB SSD. I want to get 500GB more and replace Windows with Ubuntu. Can I use some sort of software RAID to combine the 2 drives into one large logical drive?22:16
Kingsyoops, *thanks22:16

ubuntu-mateguys, I'm on a live usb talking to you here. I have installed ubuntu MATE on my laptop, but it is so stuck, it won't load. I've tried boot-repair, and this is what has come up. Can someone help me? New with linux here. http:paste2.org/G45yBOVg22:19
vidyMDTech-us: you can use lvm to show both drives as a 750gb logical drive but raid with mismatched drives doesn't work too great22:20
kyle01Can someone help me figure out a problem I'm having with Google Chrome on Ubuntu>22:20
kyle01?22:20
bekksMDTech-us: Using LVM, you can do that. But for the / volume I won't do so, since one broken drive will possibly result in a total loss of data.22:20
ben__can somebody help me with the EOL Upgrade-problem?22:20
MDTech-usbekks: well, I'd obviously do backups and stuff22:20
MDTech-usvidy: in what way does it not work great?22:21
yokisuciubuntu-mate: It says that the link doesn't exist. :/22:22
ubuntu-mateholy cow really. So, I go to install it with the live usb and it takes forever and is having trouble loading. What should I do?22:24
vidyMDTech-us: traditional raid can only combine partitions the size of the smaller drive.  if you're looking for speed vs redundancy maybe btrfs instead22:24
MDTech-usvidy: I'm really doing this for the space. nothing else22:24
MDTech-usvidy: bekks: on the other hand, I can get 2 new 250GB drives and use simple RAID 022:25
bekksMDTech-us: Or get one new 500G drive :)22:25
MDTech-usI have a 250GB drive atm22:26
MDTech-usand I want to keep it22:26
MDTech-usso RAID-wise would it be better to get 1 new 500GB drive or 2 new 250GB drives?22:26
vfwwyth: Hey, how's it going?22:26
Kiwi_Alienheya22:28
Kiwi_AlienIm a lil confused over setting up a samba server22:29
vfwKiwi_Alien: What is it?22:29
vidyMDTech-us: if you just want the space, lvm the 250/500 and the mismatch doesn't matter.  if you want to raid (of any flavor) then keep them the same size22:30
Kiwi_AlienI only want to make it accessible on LAN.22:30
vfwKiwi_Alien: To other MS Windows computers?22:30
MDTech-usvidy: is there a benefit to using btrfs?22:30
Kiwi_Alienyes :)22:31
Kiwi_AlienIts connected to home router22:31
vfwKiwi_Alien: One directory?22:31
Kiwi_AlienYeah, just for everyone. Its to put all out work for uni22:32
MDTech-usvidy: also, are there any serious performance concerns about the unequal drive sizes?22:32
vidyMDTech-us: btrfs is raid + lvm + filesystem in a single layer, so yes there are benefits.  but my servers still run lvm :)22:33
MDTech-usvidy: what is your reasoning behind not using it?22:33
MDTech-usis it hard to setup?22:33
MDTech-usbuggy?22:34
vfwKiwi_Alien cat /etc/samba/smb.conf |nc termbin.com 9999  #Let's look and see.22:35
AurizaHello22:36
MDTech-usvidy: so, to sum it up, should I buy 1 500GB drive or 2 250GB drives?22:38
vidyMDTech-us: inertia more than anything.  btrfs hasn't been buggy for years22:39
MDTech-usvidy: oh, I see. looks to be easy to back it up too22:39
vfwKiwi_Alien: BTW, you do know that you have to restart samba after each config edit, right?22:40
Kiwi_Alienyes :)22:40
Kiwi_Alienvfw i have samba working. Now i wish to drop its internet access. Make it LAN only, but still routed to router22:41
vidyMDTech-us: i'd probably do 2x 250 and run btrfs in metadata raid1 and data raid1.   if you wanted the space you could run data raid0 but make your backups.  if you got a 4th you could migrate to raid1022:43
MDTech-uscan you upgrade to a RAID 10 later on?22:43

Guest99631Just want to know how can i setup dead time for system.22:44
vidyMDTech-us: as long as you have the open blocks for whatever arrangement you can migrate whenever you want, raid0/1/5/6/10.  though i've only used 1 and 1022:44
MDTech-usoh. cool22:45

vfwbe accessable from the outside anyway.22:56
vfwKiwi_Alien: But unless you have port forwarding or some sort of tunneling through the router, it's not going to be accessable from the outside anyway.22:56
vfwKiwi_Alien: However, it's always a good idea to only alow the intended PCs access to your shares.22:57
Kiwi_Alienthis is what im strugling to understand mate22:57
Kiwi_AlienI thought, if i plug her in to the net its open game for the server22:58
vfwKiwi_Alien: While it is true that routers connect one network to another, it does not mean that computers outside your router have access to everything on your LAN.23:00
vfwKiwi_Alien: Google information about IP addresses and netmask.  Your netmask sets how much of an access you have across IPs.23:01
Kiwi_Alienwhat do you recomend i read to get a better understanding of connecting a home server on LAN23:01
pjiggyhi23:02
vfwKiwi_Alien: Gain a working knowledge of how IP addresses work in relation to the netmask you have set.  (The inside network is totally different from the outside ones.)23:03

jayjoI can't get through the login screen of ubuntu 16.06, but I can access my machine through a shell. Any ideas why this would happen, or have you heard of this before? I have space in my home directory23:22
jayjoI can login from the login screen to a tty23:22
jayjoany ideas on how to fix this?23:22
Bashing-omjayjo: Update broke a proprietary grahic's driver ? From that terminal what results : ' sudo lshw -C display ' . in the configuration line .23:23
jayjoBashing-om: driver=nvidia latency=023:24
Bashing-omjayjo: Well that says a driver is loaded . Now do "you" have the rights to access your desktop ' ls -al .ICEauthority .Xauthority ' Are "you" the owner and grouped to these access rights files ?23:26
jayjoBashing-om: I own both group and individual23:28
Bashing-omjayjo: At this point all I know to do is look at X's log file . see if X is in a happy state . ' cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log ' .23:30
