cukenHello all, I have a server I don't have physical access to but can SSH into. The root partition is completely full but the home partition has plenty of extra space. Is it possible from within SSH, to shrink the  home partition and expand the root partition?00:00
cncr04snot without physical access00:00
cukenIf I drive out to the box, I'll just need a live cd to do the partition changes right?00:01
cncr04sadvice is to mount folders like /var/log into space on the other partition00:01
Bashing-omcuken: Prune /boot back down ? ' sudo apt autoremove ' and keep an eye on it when new kernels are installed .00:01
cukenIs there a way for me to list the big data hogs within the root device to see if I can move them00:02
Bashing-om!info ncdu xenial | cuken00:02
ubottucuken: ncdu (source: ncdu): ncurses disk usage viewer. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.11-1build1 (xenial), package size 38 kB, installed size 94 kB00:02
cukenThanks all00:03
Random832cuken, does your provider not have like a vnc kvm console option?00:03
cukenIt's a physical box I have setup, just can't get to it without driving for now00:04
Random832i guess i'm making some assumptions about your scenario00:04
Random832yeah the traditional way to do it is have a remote console access (maybe just a serial port) so that you can control it even with no network or when booted to a livecd00:05
Random832but that'd be for professional stuff00:05
cukenHere's my other general question for that. The server in question has a 10 tb lvm data partition setup00:06
cukenthe root, swap, and home directory are all on one physical disk00:06
cukenI could always move that lvm off I guess and fix all the formatting. . .00:06
cukenjust seems scary to potentially lose that data00:06
ilzolendemfDOOM, i use it, but i always use `redshift -O 4000` and `redshift -x`, trying to use the normal version doesn't work well for me00:10
mfDOOMilzolende i usually do the same. I'm not a fan of the fact that it relies upon such accurate location data in it's default config00:14

KoviHi. I know that 12.04 is not supported anymore, but can I still upgrade it to 14.04?01:12
daxKovi: yes01:12
Kovidax: Can you please tell me how, sinde do-release-upgrade says that there are no now releases. :(01:13
daxo.O01:14
Tweak|2ty i will try01:14
daxKovi: is the codename output in lsb_release -a "precise" or something else01:15
Kovidax: it says precise, yes01:16
daxKovi: there should be a line starting with prompt= in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades. what does it say?01:16
Kovidax: Prompt=never01:17
daxKovi: change never to lts, try do-release-upgrade again01:18
Kovidax: I'm not sure to what version it will upgrade, but it did ask me if I want to continue. :)01:20
daxKovi: it'll do 12.04 to 14.0401:20
daxif you want to end up on 14.04 you should be done once do-release-upgrade finishes. if you want 16.04, run it again after you reboot into 14.0401:21
Tweak|2ok now i'm getting this one : dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of moodbar: moodbar depends on gstreamer0.10-plugins-base; however:Package gstreamer0.10-plugins-base is not installed.01:21
Kovidax: "do-release-updgrade -c" says 14.04.5 LTS. So this is OK?01:21
daxKovi: yes01:22
Kovidax. Great. And for how long will I be able to upgrade 12.05 to 14.04?01:22
daxKovi: Not sure, things are a bit up in the air with 12.04 infrastructure deprecation right now. Assuming you're not paying Canonical for Ubuntu Advantage support, it is no longer getting security updates, so your best bet is as soon as possible.01:24
daxIf in the future you get to the point where do-release-upgrade errors because it can't find the precise repositories, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades for instructions.01:24

ducasseYankDownUnder: containers use less resources, they share kernel etc06:36
mihalski_"10x the density of ESX, 25% faster, zero latency"06:36
mihalski_is the promise of lxd06:36
mihalski_is lxd just a higher level built on lxc?06:37
mihalski_that's how I'm perceiving it06:37
YankDownUnderI'm just sitting here trying to mentally weigh up the differences in running a server VM in "headless" mode and "containers"...hmm...06:37
ducassemihalski_: different cli tools, same kernel framework06:37
mihalski_well lxd is linux only afaik06:38
mihalski_vm's can run windows.. or other os's06:38
mihalski_xen and kvm can do windows06:38
mihalski_but are much more resource heavy06:38
YankDownUnderMy interest in running anything "Microsoft" is about the same as what is in my "Cup of Care"...06:38
mihalski_ms isn't the only non linux system06:39
YankDownUnderOS/2 ain't Microsoft? OMG OMG OMG! ;)06:39
mihalski_I quite enjoyed freebsd when I used it for a while.. it always seemed a bit alien to me since I started with linux//06:39
mihalski_beos was pretty awesome too.. there are others06:40
mihalski_and sometimes it's not about interests.. but about needs06:40
YankDownUnderI loved BeOS...set up two studios with BeOS for doing direct-to-disk recording and mixing...great stuff (until Microsoft killed them)...ditto with Novell...another story...06:41
mihalski_there are open source implementations of windows.. pretty impressive work06:41
YankDownUndermihalski_: ReactOS06:41
mihalski_beos was my jam.. it was the only thing since the Amiga that really made me hopeful for a new type of OS06:42
ducasselet's try not to stray too far offtopic, please06:42
mihalski_nostalgia is not really a topic :)06:42
mihalski_but lxd seems like the best container format to me06:43
YankDownUnderI reckon I'll stick to VB on Ubuntu...works great...spent enough time using it - knowing it...happy as a clam...06:43
mihalski_VB?06:43
YankDownUnderVirtualBox06:43
mihalski_ahh06:43
mihalski_can that run headless?06:43
YankDownUnderYes. Love it.06:43
ducasseyep06:43
ducassemihalski_: it can even interface with libvirt, afaik06:44
mihalski_overkill when you only want to run linux though06:44
mihalski_and if resources are a factor06:44
YankDownUnderDepends entirely on situation, needs and etc etc.06:44
mihalski_my ideal setup would be debian with lxd.. since you can do a SUPER slim debian install.. basically nothing.. you need to install sudo and lxd.. done..06:45
YankDownUnderPerfect example: Isolated mail server, isolated file server, isolated print server...on one machine...which is nice...06:45
ducassemihalski_: you can install a very minimal ubuntu as well06:45
mihalski_my interest in isolation is not security.. it's more about experimenting.. and snapshotting.. and recovering06:45
YankDownUnder(WindowMaker Yay!) Ahem...06:46
mihalski_I LOVEd WinmdowMaker.. is it still around?06:46
YankDownUndermihalski_: Um...kinda using it, um...like now?06:46
mihalski_but is it being worked on still?06:46
mihalski_and the entire openstep thing06:46
YankDownUndermihalski_: Updated code as of March 2017.06:46
ducassegnustep, you mean?06:46
ducasseopenstep is long dead.06:47
YankDownUnderWindowMaker...(Openstep - ah...yesh...and I have a VM of that...)06:47
mihalski_ducasse: how do you do a minimal ubuntu install? I did ubuntu server with base utils and ssh server and it's still much bigger than a debian install.. so many packages I don't need06:47
mihalski_yeah.. gnu step is what I meant06:47
YankDownUnderGNUStep still has code updates...t'ain't dead yet.06:48
mihalski_I use macOS mainly.. with linux for any server type software06:48
ducassemihalski_: you can use debootstrap if you want it _really_ small, that means you need to set up bootloader etc manually06:48
mihalski_I don't see why ubuntu doesn't give a minimal install as an option for those who want it.. it would just be a matter of which packages get installed06:49
YankDownUnderNetinstall.06:49
mihalski_or is the base utils MUCH larger under ubuntu then debian?06:49
mihalski_are debian and ubuntu developing completely independently? or is there some overlap?06:50
ducassemihalski_: the ubuntu-server packaga probably contains most of the stuff that isn't in a base debian install06:50
ducasse*package06:51
mihalski_oh? is that a default task you don't get to choose?06:51
ducasseon the server image, yes06:51
mihalski_interesting.. so you mentioned a netinistall? is there a netinst for ubuntu just like there is for debian? the lets you do a proper minimal install?06:52
ducasse!mini06:52
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD06:52
mihalski_for a desktop I'd choose ubuntu over debian.. but for headless debian seems better suited... but lxd isn't in debian yet :P06:52
mihalski_I've not used a graphical installer for years so that's fine06:52
mihalski_I feel like I've downloaded 20 install images in the last few weeks06:53
mihalski_debian and ubuntu06:53
mihalski_and some others.. in the search for just the right thing06:53
mihalski_fail :/06:54
mihalski_While the minimal iso image is handy, it isn't useful for installing on UEFI-based systems that you want to run in UEFI mode. The mini iso lacks the proper files for booting the computer in UEFI mode.06:54
mihalski_seems like there are ways to fashion your own uefi compatible minimal install.. but it would be nice if it were downloadable somewhere06:56
mihalski_https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UEFI/PXE-netboot-install06:56
mihalski_looks like it COULD work.. maybe06:57
mihalski_I tend to run into the problems always06:57
mihalski_increasing complexity until it usually fails for some unexpected reason and I have to move onto another idea06:58
mihalski_Would you like LXD to be available over the network (yes/no)07:04
mihalski_umm..I'm having trouble finding what that actually means07:05
mihalski_I presume not about network access to containers but lxd.. whatever that means07:05
mihalski_ok.., I can see I am right.. but still don't know what it means.. what can lxd network access actually allow me to do?07:07
ducassecontrol lxd over the network07:08
mihalski_would that include if I wanted to control lxd from within one of the containers?07:09
ducasseyes, that would need to be done over the network.07:09
mihalski_ok... then I'll enable it07:09
mihalski_Would you like stale cached images to be updated automatically (yes/no) what is this referring to?07:13
mihalski_cached images of what?07:13
mihalski_downloaded containers?07:13

Now it doesnt boot, but only gives my the tty1 terminal and it apparently didnt update the core since I get an Import Error that apt couldnt be found. If I need to reinstall, how could I save my photo data or is there a way to save me from my issue?09:30

mihalski_backflow: that looks like a variation on the solution I posted.. but in either case.. those files do not exist.. is it the case that creating this link (ln -s /dev/null /etc/systemd/network/99-default.link) will inhibit this behaviour?10:34

SchwarzbaerHi. I want to edit large, image-heavy PDFs; The Eclipse Phase books, if that means something to you. When I open them in LibreOffice, my machine comes to a grinding halt. Is there an editor that's lighter on the resources? Or is there a way to strip out some or all images? Text-only would be sufficient for me.12:44

UbuntuNoobHello, this morning my (very old) laptop running Ubuntu froze up, and I held the power down to shut it off. The drive is encrypted with whatever encryption method is applied from the regular Ubuntu installation window. When booting back up, it will prompt me for my password to decrypt the drive, and afterwards will give me a busybox terminal.17:22
UbuntuNoobI am unsure what steps to take to fix my installation, and have had difficulty in trying to recover any data from my home directory while booting from a Live USB copy of Ubuntu due to the encryption on it.17:23

thatlizdudeholy sh!t are you kidding me22:29
thatlizdudenever using unetbootin again22:30
tomreyn_newpcthatlizdude, "unetbootin" is not a verb i am aware of. are you trying to create some form of bootable media using the "unetbootin" software? what type of media? is Apple OS X the host OS, hosting a virtual machine which runs ubuntu 16.04? and you ar erunning the unetbootin software in this VM?22:31
thatlizdudetomreyn_newpc: "UNetBootin" is on Ubuntu's website22:32
thatlizdudei don't know if you ever made a bootable USB22:32
thatlizdudebut that's what it tells me to use22:32
tomreyn_newpci did. and am aware of the software. i'm just asking these questions to better nuderstand what you are trying to do / achieve and how, and how it's not working as expected.22:33
tomreyn_newpcthatlizdude, ^22:33

ricky____`hello, all. i'm using ubuntu MATE 16.04, and caja has stopped opening files when i double-click or right-click->open with... any pointers?23:28
Kucheso im on 16.04 and my f3 button broke which i used to increase screen brightness, how can i now do it from the command line?23:34
ricky____`Kuche: did you try xbacklight?23:35
catbeardso i'm using synapse (apt-get install synapse) on ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS23:35
catbeardhow do i get this to bind to a custom key like WinKey+R23:35
Kuchei have tried nothing so far, ricky____`, but my f3 button was continually having problems and now it just broke. a year ago, someone had given me a nice command which i used to increase brightness without installing anything, i forgot what it was23:36
catbeardand start on boot with (synapse -s)23:36
Kuchericky____`: i dont have xbacklight installed23:36
ricky____`Kuche: i didn't have it installed either. :)23:36
ricky____`but it does work. just tried it.23:36

zukizukitobroken23:43

YankDownUnderzukizukito: So it's a "non graphical" boot screen.23:44

YankDownUnderzukizukito: What happened between the time that it worked properly and now? What was changed/reconfigured/added?23:45
thatlizdudethe Windows isn't booting i don't know what to do :'(23:45
zukizukitoi have dual boot , kali and ubuntu23:45
zukizukitoi did an apt-get upgrade in kali23:45
YankDownUnderzukizukito: So the "upgrade" in kali appears to have broken the "Plymouth" for when you boot Ubuntu...is this correct?23:46
zukizukitomaybe23:47
ricky____`any takers for caja not opening files? it was working and suddenly stopped. using xdg-open for everything is getting tiring. :(23:47
ricky____`right-click->open in terminal also doesn't work.23:48
YankDownUnderzukizukito: For Ubuntu, if you wish to make a change to "Plymouth", it would be best to open a terminal and type: sudo dpkg-reconfigure plymouth ==> follow the prompts23:48
ricky____`and since running caja from the command line doesn't let you see the output (as well as the man page says nothing about it), i'm sort of stuck.23:48
thatlizdudeguys help me i can't boot into Windows after modifying it with Ubuntu chntpw23:49

thatlizdudei was supposed to remove the password from it, not break it23:49
tomreyn_newpcas you may have noticed, this is an _ubuntu_ support channel23:49
thatlizdudethat's great23:49
zukizukitoits says plymouth is broken23:49

thatlizdudei'm done with this23:50
ricky____`tomreyn_newpc: can you offer me some support then? :)23:51
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: Did you actually READ the documentation for chntpw, or did you just "run directly into the situation"?23:51
tomreyn_newpcricky____`, i don't even know what caja is. probably some graphical file manager?23:51
thatlizdudeYankDownUnder: i ran into it...23:51
ricky____`right. a rebadged nautilus.23:51
zukizukitofor kali , i did the guided installation ,23:51
thatlizdudebut what can i do?23:51
thatlizdudedo i have to reinstall windows?23:52
thatlizdudei'm done :;(23:52
tomreyn_newpcricky____`, what happened / changed between when it worked and when it broke?23:52
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: You cannot try to deflect the blame for your actions on anyone else - Ubuntu or otherwise. People try to help. It's up to YOU to do so with regard, intelligence, patience and THOUGHT.23:52
aroonii'm seeing duplicate menubars23:53
ricky____`tomreyn_newpc: pretty much just using the computer. it's not like i rebooted and it was broken. just stopped working.23:53
thatlizdudeYankDownUnder: i'm not blaming anyone else23:53
thatlizdudei just don't know what to do23:53
ricky____`using tmux/vim/gimp/chrome/caja, roughly.23:53
arooniin ubuntu 16.04; i.e. in terminal i see the close/minimize/maximize and then again on system emnubar;  how do i see only one23:53
ricky____`i can still browse the files, but they no longer open.23:53
YankDownUnderthatlizdude: GOOGLE. THINK. Write a bloody list of what you did, and what you THINK you should do. Get organised. Be patient.23:53
thatlizdudeaight23:54
tomreyn_newpcricky____`, so one possibility might be that an upgrade was installed which broke this functionality. but this should only happen if you were using caja or its dependencies form a PPA.23:54
blackflowzukizukito: the two operating systems are sharing the same /boot ?23:55
tomreyn_newpcricky____`, is that so?23:55
ricky____`tomreyn_newpc: i have auto-update off. i do it manually.23:55
ricky____`and i haven't updated in the last ~week, so doubtful.23:55
tomreyn_newpcricky____`, okay, then another hypothesis is that there is a stuck broken caja or xdg-open process which breaks this. run "ps auxw | grep -E '(caja|xdg-open)'" - does it list anything, and anything you would not expect (if you can tell, if you cannot tell just put the output on a pastebin)23:57
dw1I dont have a 'Remote Desktop' option in System > Prefereces in 17.04 - how do I enable it?23:58
ricky____`tomreyn_newpc: good idea, just a moment. i'll take them all down to be sure.23:59
devz0rOK so I have this USB dongle thing. It works perfectly in Ubuntu 16.10. In 16.04 and 17.04, it stops working after like 10-20 minutes. It's a Linksys AE1000 v1 802.11n [Ralink RT3572]23:59
tomreyn_newpcricky____`, or you could reboot, might also solve it23:59
