pragmaticenigmaSo I think we discovered why 16.04.3 was recommended, but it apepars there is a workaround00:00
=== sjohnson is now known as bjohnson
sarnoldpragmaticenigma: wow :/00:01
tomreynpuff: you can just select the "right" (intel provided) kernel image, though. the issue there is just that the default ubuntu kernel has a higher version and thus becomes the default.00:01
tomreynpuff: keyboard on grub should still work fine though. see https://github.com/intel-aero/meta-intel-aero/issues/363#issuecomment-41530944300:02
fasslc0nker, sarnold sometimes a .so file is not an actual shared lib but a text file containing a path to where to find the actual one, iirc, what does the file command say about that file?00:03
tomreynpuff: you can also fix the kernel to boot by editing /etc/default/grub - but maybe that's for later.00:03
sarnoldfassl: woah really?00:03
fassli remember having to patch some paths for libm/libc in .so files trying to build a sysrooted gcc00:04
sarnoldfassl: beautiful. :D thanks!00:04
puffSo, question, should I continue down this path of sneakernetting wifi packages onto the server install, or punt and reinstall 16.04.3 and figure out the kernel?00:04
c0nkerim making space for apt-file update to be able to finish00:04
sarnoldpuff: punting might be quicker00:04
puffPart of me wants to finish with the server install approach, but I suspect punting is better.00:04
c0nkerif everything fails I'll need to transfuse from another disk00:04
puffOkay, I can always redo the server install.00:04
sarnoldc0nker: sorry, I just meant to try one of the other packages that supplies that file :( I'm sorry :(00:05
c0nkernah I think I got it00:05
puffYou guys going to be around in a bit?  I could use some help figuring out grub. Haven't touched it in ages and was never super confident with it.00:05
c0nkerhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/ZdwRTxKHpx/ sarnold00:05
pragmaticenigmapuff if you need notes irclogs.ubuntu.com will have this conversation for you :-) I would also punt and try again with the recommended path00:06
sarnoldc0nker: and if you install nvidia-340 ?00:06
c0nkerI *think* it is installed00:06
c0nkeroh, I am not00:07
c0nkerim in nvidia-driver-39000:07
c0nkerthe tested, recommended metapackage00:07
c0nkerits a pain in the ass to change it again, but I guess I can try00:08
sarnoldoh :(00:09
c0nkerdo you think that would work?00:10
tomreynpuff: i'll not be around for a whole lot longer (it's past midnight here), but maybe a bit after taking a shower.00:13
johnjayis apt not installed by default anymore?00:14
johnjayi tried sudo apt-get install <very important program> and it said to use snap00:14
leftyfbjohnjay: what program?00:14
johnjayemacs of course00:14
leftyfbwhat vesion of ubuntu?00:14
johnjaysome benighted souls have decided it no longer belongs on the main cd anymore00:14
johnjay18.0400:14
leftyfbjohnjay: emacs installs just fine on Ubuntu 18.0400:15
leftyfbusing apt00:15
pragmaticenigmainstalls just fine for me to using apt and apt-get00:15
johnjaymaybe i need to snap install apt first?00:15
pragmaticenigmajohnjay: no00:15
johnjayidk i just typed sudo apt install at a terminal right after install00:15
leftyfbjohnjay: sudo apt install emacs00:15
leftyfbtype it now00:15
johnjayyes that failed00:15
leftyfbpastebin please00:16
johnjayok sec. let me try again00:16
leftyfbjohnjay: if it doesn't work, please run this and paste the link here:  nc termbin.com 9999 < <(lsb_release -ds;cat /proc/{version,cmdline};sudo apt install emacs -y)00:17
c0nkerok Im going to purge Nvidia packages, and install the old one00:18
c0nkernot the original, just the binary blob00:18
johnjayit says No apt package "emacs", but there is a snap with that name.Try "snap install emacs"00:19
c0nkerI dont know if it will work, to be honest I dont know how to fix this mess00:19
Bashing-omc0nker: Check too that there is not an xorg.conf file at play here :)00:19
pragmaticenigmajohnjay: please send us the link that comes from: nc termbin.com 9999 < <(lsb_release -ds;cat /proc/{version,cmdline};sudo apt install emacs -y)00:20
leftyfbjohnjay:  nc termbin.com 9999 < <(lsb_release -ds;cat /proc/{version,cmdline};sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-cache policy emacs )00:20
c0nkerBashing-om, I think I saw your post, I checked before, but I dont know if there's any other problem00:20
c0nkernow my system wont log in normally, without weyland00:20
c0nkerI assumed that was the problem00:20
uRockhttps://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/emacs00:21
uRockIt's "supposed" to be there00:21
leftyfbuRock: it is00:21
Bashing-omc0nker: Nvidia and Wayland is still a work in progress :(00:21
leftyfbsomething else is wrong. This is why we are troubleshooting00:21
c0nkerand im out of space00:22
uRockleftyfb, I know, just throwing that in there for viewing pleasure.00:22
johnjayhttps://termbin.com/qyl400:22
johnjayleftyfb00:22
johnjaythe command failed because could not get a lock on /var/apt/...00:23
johnjayshould I try su'ing?00:23
uRockusually means something else is using apt00:23
pragmaticenigmajohnjay: it couldn't get a lock because another apt process was running... you can try it again in a few moments00:23
leftyfbI'm betting something else is wrong00:24
johnjayoh well when it gives that lock error it never allows you to do anything00:24
leftyfbjohnjay: please pastebin the error00:24
johnjayi've got 2x apt.systemd.dai and one apt-get running00:24
leftyfbthis is why it's failing00:24
leftyfbjohnjay: please pastebin the error00:24
johnjayhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/8THgpsWcKf/00:25
leftyfbjohnjay: please pastebin: ps -ef |egrep "apt|dpkg"00:26
johnjayhttps://paste.ubuntu.com/p/PN9WxJgDSb/00:26
johnjayit's the 3 processes i mentioned00:27
johnjayare they frozen?00:27
leftyfbthey've been running for about 10 minutes00:27
sarnoldthey've been running for at least eight minutes00:27
johnjayyeah i just started the system up so i assume that's why00:28
johnjayi think i did install emacs through the software center after i got that error00:28
johnjaythe snap one i mean00:28
johnjayotherwise it's fresh install00:28
johnjayshould I try reinstalling Ubuntu? XD00:28
leftyfbeither wait for those processes to stop, reboot, or kill the processes and manually run: sudo apt update ; sudo apt full-upgrade00:29
johnjaywell that's what i've done in the past when i got this problem00:29
johnjayok00:29
leftyfbI gave 3 options. Which have you done in the past? You also shouldn't be running into this issue that often00:30
pufftomreyn, sarnold, pragmaticenigma: Okay, while I'm waiting for the 16.04.3 ISO to download, what do I need to do with grub?00:30
johnjayi think i run into it everytime i install ubuntu00:30
johnjaybut i've only done that like 2 or 3 times recently00:30
johnjaythe last one00:31
johnjayi've killed them and now apt-get works fine00:31
pragmaticenigmapuff I would read through that entire thread I sent you, I'm not familiar with what you are trying to do... tomreyn has stepped out for a while00:31
johnjaymaybe it was downloading stuff... the software center window just popped up with updates to install00:31
johnjaycould that be it?00:32
sarnoldjohnjay: you could check the output of journalctl -u apt-daily   to see roughly how long that process takes00:32
sarnoldpuff: sorry, I've only ever seen the installer a handful of times.. once things are up and running I leave em alone for a few years00:33
c0nkerok Im going to reboot and see what happens, Ive changed my nvidia driver again00:33
sarnoldc0nker: woot good luck00:33
johnjaysarnold: it says failed to start00:34
johnjayjul 23 19:30:23 asrock systemd[1]: apt-daily.service: Main process exited, code=killed, status=9/KILL00:34
MalMenthere is any channel for discusting Ubuntucon ?00:34
sarnoldjohnjay: that was probably you killing it a momment ago00:34
mmerceranyone ever had an issue with preseed.cfg root-password crypted values not working for login via ssh ?00:35
sarnoldjohnjay: mine has loads of historical runs: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/nGpxZT8CgV/00:35
mmerceri have root login boolean set to true, ive tested the salt and hash numerous times, it works, but I cannot for the life of me login on this machine with the password that I should be able to00:35
leftyfbMalMen: since there is no such thing, no00:35
sarnoldmmercer: if you don't get responses in a few minutes, try again in #ubuntu-server -- it's more likely someone in there's done preseed00:35
puffpragmaticenigma: I read through the thread.  What I think needs to happen is a) interrupt the boot at the grub menu, easy enough, just hit the arrow key when it comes up. b) select the older kernel to boot from.  That part may be trickier... if it's an option in the grub menu, easy, otherwise I need to figure out the right grub command to boot that kernel. c) edit the /etc/default/grub to make it always default to the older kernel.00:35
mmercersarnold: ahh, perfect, forgot separated room, tnx00:36
johnjaysarnold: so is this just a matter of, i often try to install software right after i login00:37
johnjayand the apt process is still doing that daily update thing?00:37
sarnoldjohnjay: probably00:37
sarnoldjohnjay: you could fiddle with the settings if you want to disable it, but I suspect it'll solve itself over time as you're less likely to need to install new things in a few weeks00:38
=== bjohnson is now known as sjohnson
johnjayright00:44
johnjaythat makes sense00:44
johnjaypersonally i find this process tiresome. there's not even a metapackage i can see that installs inkscape and gimp together00:45
johnjaythanks for the help all00:45
sarnoldyou may find the two useful together, but I've used gimp thousands of times and inkscape never :)00:45
sarnoldthere'd be several hundred thousand pacakges if we had meta pacakges for every two packages on the system..00:45
sarnoldand I'm not sure apt install gimp-and-inkscape is better than apt install gimp inkscape00:46
sarnoldand someone would doubtless typo apt install inkscape-and-gimp and wonder why it doesn't exist so we'd wind up with a fewh undred thousand more packages with the package names in either order... :D00:47
leftyfbthere's no reason to install both using a meta package00:47
leftyfbother than individual personal preference. Which does not make for good development00:47
Bashing-omMalMen: "alis" lists the #ubucon channel - see if that is what you seek ;)00:48
johnjaysarnold: i was thinking more something like graphics-general-tools00:50
johnjayblender doesn't seem to be in any metapackages either00:50
johnjayjust a few00:50
sarnoldif you're aiming at multimedia kinds of things there is ubuntu studio, though that's way more than just a handy metapackage00:51
johnjay yes i did use that before00:52
EickmeyerBlender should be part of the ubuntustudio-video metapackage00:52
johnjayi wanted to try vanilla ubuntu this time00:52
johnjayEickmeyer: idk if that exists but apt-redepends -r didnt' show it for me00:53
Eickmeyerjohnjay: I'm the leader of Ubuntu Studio. Trust me on this one.00:53
johnjayheh right00:54
johnjayi meant exists in the ubuntu repo00:54
johnjaylooks like i have bionic main restricted, bionic universe, bionic-updates main restricted00:55
johnjayalso multiverse and backports00:55
tomreynpuff: after installing and booting into the installed system, and after installing the intel kernel image from their PPA, you can do this to fix grub to default to the intel kernel: https://askubuntu.com/questions/216398/set-older-kernel-as-default-grub-entry#answers00:55
Bashing-omjohnjay: "sysop@x1804mini:~$ apt list blender >> blender/bionic-updates 2.79.b+dfsg0-1ubuntu1.18.04.1 amd64" .00:56
leftyfbjohnjay: the ubuntustudio-video meta-package is part of the universe repo00:56
johnjayso i should have it00:56
leftyfbor you could just install blender00:56
johnjayi wonder why apt-rdepends doesn't show it then00:57
johnjayit only shows morse-simulator and blender-ogrexml00:57
johnjayanyways gtg00:58
johnjaythanks again00:59
coffeecowCan anyone recommend some easy replacements for Google Calendar, Apple Notes and Reminders that I can host myself on my home server? I want to be able to manage stuff from my phone on iOS and on my Ubuntu lapotp.00:59
tomreynpuff: and yes i'd expect the intel kernel to get automatically added to the grub menu when you install it (you may need to run update-grub, but i assume this will happen automatically, too)01:00
tomreyncoffeecow: nextcloud may cover this and more, have a look.01:01
dan_kellycan you remove the hwe kernel and install the standard GA kernel in Ubuntu 18.04.201:05
leftyfbdan_kelly: yes01:05
MaroonedAnchorcoffeecow: I second the nextcloud recommendation01:06
dan_kellylefyfb:Is there instruction how to do that?01:07
leftyfbdan_kelly: why do you need to do this?01:08
OerHeksi think reboot in the non-hwe kernel, should still be  installed, and remove the hwe part ?01:09
dan_kelly<leftyfb> Hardware compatibility issues.01:10
pufftomreyn: Thanks.01:11
pufftomreyn: Hm, tried holding down the shift key as it booted, but it didn't give me the grub menu.01:11
leftyfbdan_kelly: care to elaborate? You know for a fact that you currently have a piece of hardware that fails to work with the 4.18.x kernel but you know works with the 4.15.x kernel?01:12
pufftomreyn: Hm, the trick seems to be to hit ESC to get into BIOS and then select to boot ubuntu, then hit esc to get the grub> prompt.  I think if I hit it just once I'll stop at the menu, I hope.01:15
dan_kellyleftyfb: The most recent hwe stack brakes my hardware drives every time I let the hwe update01:20
leftyfbdan_kelly: define "brakes my hardware drives"01:20
=== zbenjamin_ is now known as zbenjamin
dan_kellyleftyfb: vbox quits working, AMD graphics card fails to work properly and so on01:25
leftyfbdan_kelly: sounds like you're missing the kernel headers for new kernels01:26
pufftomreyn, sarnold: Took some tricky timing with the ESC key but now I'm in ubuntu 16.04.3 with kernel 4.10 and functional keyboard and mouse, yay!01:28
sarnoldpuff: *nice*01:28
sarnoldpuff: man that feels like absolutely forever ago :/01:28
leftyfbdan_kelly: which kernel are you running right now?01:29
puffsarnold: So does this morning.01:29
tomreynpuff: yeay01:29
dan_kellyleftyfb: I just want to down grade be to a working kernel01:29
tomreynpuff: and you also have wireless there?01:30
leftyfbdan_kelly: no, you want your system working. What kernel you're running shouldn't matter as long as it works01:30
pufftomreyn: Yup!01:30
sarnoldTue 23 19:20:54  -> Wed 24 01:29:3301:30
leftyfbdan_kelly: If you are currently running 4.18.0-25-generic, then try sudo apt install linux-modules-4.18.0-25-generic01:30
tomreynpuff: so now you probably want to install ubuntu-server^ and remove ubuntu-desktop but make sure you don't remove andthing wireless-y01:31
tomreyn*anYthing01:31
pufftomreyn: No, 16.04.3 desktop is the install the instructions say to use, I was trying server because of the keyboard/mose problem.  At this point I just need to make sure it always uses the 4.10 kernel.01:32
tomreynpuff: ok, it's just that you now waste some RAM by running a graphical desktop you will probably never use (i think), but that's totally your choice01:33
pufftomreyn: I'd agree with you, but for now I'm just trying to make it work the "right" way.01:34
tomreynok :)01:34
puffLater I'll work on optimizing it.01:34
tomreyni understand the approach, makes sense01:34
puffHm, apt gives me the lock error.  Maybe there's some post-install updating going on in the background?01:34
dan_kellyleftyfb: I give that a try. Thanks01:34
puffps shows the daily update...01:35
tomreynpuff: update-manager is probably running in the background. keep trying again in a few minutes01:35
puffyeah.01:35
puffHm, to set GRUB_DEFAULT I need the full name as used in the grub menu the kernel I want.  Is there a way to list those?01:36
puffAh, sudo grub-mkconfig01:37
tomreynpuff: update-grub writes those as "menuentry" into /boot/grub/grub.cfg01:38
tomreynright, works, too01:38
tomreynpuff: out of interest, had you ever tried ubuntu 18.04 or something newer on there?01:40
pufftomreyn: Not yet.01:45
luxbelhello01:46
tomreynokay, i was just wondering whether maybe newer kernels would have updated drivers which would make the keyboard work again01:46
pufftomreyn: I considered it.  I didn't expect to run into this keyboard/mouse problem and while normally I would assume there's no way to break the hardware by trying a later ubuntu install, at this point I'm now paranoid as hell...01:46
puffYeah.01:46
puffIt's on my list to try later...01:47
tomreyncool01:47
tomreynhi luxbel01:47
puffokay, I edited /etc/default/grub, saved, ran update-grub, rebooting now, holding my breath...01:47
luxbelI am trying to use an Emerson TV on ubuntu 18.10 but doesn't work...01:47
tomreyn!18.1001:47
ubottuUbuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) was the 29th release of Ubuntu. Support ended July 18th, 2019. See !eol and https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-security-announce/2019-July/004996.html01:47
tomreynluxbel: you need to upgrade to 19.04.01:48
puffAnd yay, it boots with the 4.10 kernel and the keyboard and mouse work!01:48
tomreynnot neccessarily to make the TV work but to have a supported ubuntu version01:49
tomreynpuff: nice!01:49
luxbelthe tv is old so i dot think i will make a difference01:49
tomreynluxbel: it makes a difference in that we only support supported releases here. ;)01:50
luxbelin cli how i update my system without losing settings and everything???01:50
luxbelohhh01:50
tomreynluxbel: how does the screen not work, though?01:50

tomreyni'll try to remember01:53
sarnoldsame :)01:53
puffHow do I list the kernels available?  I guess look in /boot?01:53
StupidLikeAFoxSo, I just did a fresh install on my laptop, and left a few mb empty at the start of the drive so grub could do it's thing01:53
puffI'm tempted to just delete the 4.15 kernel:-)01:53
tomreynpuff: yes, or dpkg -l | grep ^linux-image01:53
StupidLikeAFoxit didn't make a ~2mb grub parition, so I have no idea what it did01:54
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: fresh install of what, installing how?01:55
StupidLikeAFoxxubuntu 18.04.2lts, from a liveUSB, onto an ssd I partitioned (gpt type)01:55
luxbelnow somehow got connnected but it doesnt fit the tv01:56
luxbelit doesnt get the edges so i couldnt change settings by window01:56
luxbeli now need to use the cli01:56
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: and you're booting in BIOS or UEFI mode?01:57
luxbeluefi i think01:57
StupidLikeAFoxThere's no options thing that pops up, but it boots so it is somewhere01:57
StupidLikeAFoxtomreyn: legacy01:57
tomreynluxbel: can you share the output?    xrandr | nc termbin.com 999901:57
luxbelam pretty new to this it have been like years since the last time i use linux at all01:58
StupidLikeAFoxat least, it /shouldn't/ be uefi01:58
StupidLikeAFoxI don't beleive the installed asked me what I wanted but I don't think uefi is enabled on the mobo01:59
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: this tells, but i guess you'd need to be able to boot first of all...   echo -n 'This system booted via: '; [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo BIOS01:59
impermanenceso02:00
impermanence18.04 (which I've literally never used) doesn't have the PermitRootLogin directive in ssh_config?02:00
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: so you did manual partitioning using the ubuntu installer, right?02:00
StupidLikeAFoxtomreyn: typethat whole thing in a terminal?02:00
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: type or copy and paste, yes02:00
StupidLikeAFoxI did manual partitioning in gparted when still booted as live02:00
StupidLikeAFoxthis is not the machine in question02:00
impermanenceTecMint says the way to disable root login is simply to expire the password02:01
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: you could install an ssh server on the machine in question then connect to it via ssh02:01
impermanenceI never realized it before but apparently ssh_config is directive based02:01
impermanenceand it recognizes other directives02:01
StupidLikeAFoxor I could install an irc client on it02:01
impermanencebut not PermitRootLogin no   anymore02:01
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: so you did manual partitioning using gparted form a live / installer usb, and then you started the installe dand installed?02:02
tomreynimpermanence: i have it there:     #PermitRootLogin prohibit-password02:03
impermanencecool02:03
tomreynimpermanence: it's commented out meaning this is the default setting.02:03
StupidLikeAFoxtomreyn: there was a reboot in there, but basically02:03
impermanenceI don't02:03
StupidLikeAFoxand it said 'BIOS'02:04
impermanenceit is not in my file02:04
impermanenceI'm not confused about that02:04
impermanenceand it is not recognized as a directive02:04
impermanencestrizzange02:04
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: and then on the installer, did you do manual partitioning there or just install to the drive?02:04
impermanencenor is it in man ssh_config02:04
impermanenceI think they removed it02:04
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: ...using automatic paritioing02:04
StupidLikeAFoxtomreyn: I assigned all the partitions to mount points02:04
impermanenceI think it has been deprecated or something02:05
StupidLikeAFoxmanually02:05
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: you'd need to have setup a bios grub partition then, i think02:05
impermanencemaybe not lol02:05
StupidLikeAFoxtomreyn: ah, gparted didn't seem to have an option to make one02:06
tomreynimpermanence: the manual for the ssh server is sshd_config(5) -note the d02:06
impermanenceah funk02:06
impermanenceyep02:06
impermanencederp02:06
StupidLikeAFoxon this one, there was a 2mb biosgrub partition stuck at the very end of the drive02:06
impermanenceBob beith thine uncle02:06
impermanencethank you02:06
pufftomreyn: Installing all the rest of the aero stuff now.  What I wonder is why/how the heck it ended up with the wrong kernel there.  That's the ubuntu installer that the docs link to, after all.02:07
tomreyn!enter | impermanence : you're welcome, and please02:07
ubottuimpermanence : you're welcome, and please: Please try and keep as much of your info as possible on ONE line - easier to follow for everyone.02:07
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: i guess this should have worked, too, then02:08
StupidLikeAFoxI don't remember doing anything special last time to make grub do it's thing properly02:08
tomreynpuff: update-grub selects the higest version kernel as a default unless you override this as you did. but maybe i misunderstood what you'Re saying?02:09
StupidLikeAFoxShould I be in the grub specific room?02:09
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: you're doing fine here. i suggest you do a standardinstall, then look at how it's laid out, and then optionally reinstall with your customizations, or just shuffle things around as needed.02:10
StupidLikeAFoxtomreyn: It's partitioned basically the same way this one is, with two slight differences02:11
StupidLikeAFoxI left ~5mb of empty space before the first partition, and I left out the ntfs partition in the group of OS ones before my home02:12
tomreynStupidLikeAFox: if that results in it booting one but not the other time then at least one of the slight differences can't be that slight.02:12
StupidLikeAFoxThe machine is currently booting up, just confused why grub installed like an mbr one02:13
tomreynkeep it simple during installation, add extra partitions post install as needed02:13

StupidLikeAFoxidea of trying to fully partition it to start is so I won't have to manually edit the fstab(s) after :T02:15
tomreyni'm not sure it's worth this - but your mileage may vary02:18

lotuspsychjeCarlFK: maybe try #libreoffice or #gimp03:30
CarlFKwoot: super key, applications, details, default apps, photos, gimp.03:37
pufftomreyn: I set it explicity via GRUB_DEFAULT per the link you pointed me to.03:40
pufftomreyn However, I just changed that to set it to the intel aero kernel... and it comes up without wifi. Or, apparently, networkmanager.03:40
lotuspsychjepuff: is your issue solved now?03:44
pufflotuspsychje: No.03:48
lotuspsychjepuff: feel free to re-ask your issue to the channel, so other volunteers can try to pickup where you left03:49
pufflotuspsychje: So I fixed the problem with the USB mouse and keyboard not working by editing /etc/default/grub and setting GRUB_DEFAULT to the 4.10 kernel. Then I installed the intel aero drone packages, etc according to the instructiosn, and it booted up and... no wifi hotspot.  The networkmanager dropdown doesn't even list a wifi option.03:49
pufflotuspsychje: So I tried restoring /etc/default/grub to the backup, rebooted, same result, no wifi.03:50
pufflotuspsychje: I'm not sure how dependent the aero stuff is on that aero kernel, but I'm guessing it's there for a reason...03:50
pufflotuspsychje: Bigger picture, I'm trying to install ubuntu on an intel aero quadcopter, following these instructions:  https://github.com/intel-aero/meta-intel-aero/wiki/90-(References)-OS-user-Installation04:00
pufflotuspsychje: I got it working once, then reinstalled to the stock yocto that the aero comes with.  Then tried to install ubuntu again, but after getting to the end of the install and clicknig reboot the USB mouse and keyboard didn't work.04:01
pufflotuspsychje: pragmaticenigma found this bug, which seems to be the answer https://github.com/intel-aero/meta-intel-aero/issues/36304:02
lotus|NUCpuff: can that device not be installed with a more recent point release? there's 16.04.6 now04:03
pufflotuspsychje: long story short, 16.04.3 has two kernel versions, 4.10 and 4.15, and it was booting 4.15 and the fix was to force it to boot 4.10.  Which I did.  Then I followed the rest of the steps, installing various dependencies and then stuff from the intel aero PPA, and it all appeared to go smoothly, but when I undid the /etc/default/grub GRUB_DEFAULT setting it went back to 4.15.  When I set it to the intel aero kernel from the04:03
puffPPA, it doesn't come up with the wifi hotspot and the networkmanager GUI doesn't even list wifi.04:03
lotus|NUCpuff: the problem now is we cant go file bugs on outdated kernels or point releases04:04
pufflotuspsychje: There's a special intel aero kernel for that version of 16.0.3.  I actually tried 16.04.05 and 16.04.06 but that was before we figured out the kernel problem, so the USB mouse & keyboard didn't work on those either.04:04
pufflotus|NUC: My current hypothesis, such as it is, is that messing with the grub config tripped up the aero package installs somehow.04:05
lotus|NUCpuff: i surely would consider filing a bug on that, on 16.04.604:05
pufflotus|NUC: So I'm thinking, a) try to apt remove purge the packages and then reinstall them, and if that doesn't work b) try reinstalling 16.04.3 from scratch, this time not messing with the grub configs and just using the grub boot menu to pick 4.10, then install the aero packages and let the rest happen by the defaults.04:06
lotus|NUCpuff: sure you can try, but the way i see it, keeping your device on .3 gives you security risks and unwanted behaviour once you connect to the internet04:08
lotus|NUCpuff: when filing a bug on .6 might give light on whats actually wrong there04:09
pufflotus|NUC: Unless you can convince intel to update their support, there's not much I can do.04:10
lotus|NUCpuff: another problem is those intel ppa's we cannot support either04:10
puffRight.04:10
puffMy point is, Intel has me stuck with 16.04.3, I'm just trying to make this $1500 quadcopter work.04:11
lotus|NUCpuff: but without the ppa's, your device doesnt work by default, its an ubuntu bug right04:11
puffI never said it's an ubuntu bug (though the USB mouse and keyboard thing might be)04:11
puffI'm just trying to fix this.04:11
lotus|NUCpuff: hence why to test it on default 16.04.6 or 18.04.2 to see if it doesnt work by default04:12
lotus|NUCpuff: if nobody ever files a bug on weird devices, devs will also never notice what to adapt, agree?04:13
puffWhat are the odds that there's some sort of weird conflict between the intel aero kernel and 16.04.6?04:13
puffI'll definitely try 16.04.6, after I finish trying 16.04.3.04:13
lotus|NUCpuff: that would be great, then the devs would have to be creative04:14
puffhey, looks like the purge may have fixed it, though I had to manually choose the aero kernel at the grub menu.04:14
puffCool, okay... so now I'm going to run the network tests that were the whole reason I'm doing this to begin with.04:14
lotus|NUCkk good luck04:15
puffThanks, goodnight, I'm going to start the test then watch a little TV to relax, then hit the sack.  I'll try 16.04.6 tomorrow.04:15

MonsieurBonI have a Lenovo Thinkpad P52 with two hard drives. One has an encrypted Ubuntu installation, the other has a windows 10 which I'm not using. This morning I got a firmware upgrade notification in Ubuntu, which I successfully installed. However, it apparently also installed the windows boot manager and now I cannot boot into Ubuntu anymore. I removed the windows 10 drive now. How do I install grub, so I can boot ubuntu again?07:15
EoflaOEMonsieurBon: Do you have Live CD or USB?07:16

MonsieurBonEoflaOE, I think I will also have to mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 in /boot before mounting the efi partition, right?07:53

carogatomreyn: thanks. It happend like a few hours ago, would this still be in my journal ?10:58

tomreynokay, so screen lock, got it.12:04
tomreynand you're setting acpi_osi=Linux explicitly, why?12:05

carogaBut this problem is also without acpi_osi setting12:06
carogatomreyn: I happen ot have a meeting now. so i will check after it12:07

ses1984oh, zero, dont check, that's what i should do for network fs13:12
ses1984it's strange, if i restart the containers, and restart my test suite, i have one database running per physical core, i have two test workers per physical core, the system is almost completely loaded and feels almost completely responsive13:15

carogaYeah I thought this was an error of ubuntu not being able to read this from the MB, but the bios states the same.14:12

tomreynyou can also try this https://iam.tj/prototype/enhancements/Windows-acpi_osi.html14:18
carogaAre you saying I could tell it to suspend to mem instead of disk ? that's a setting?14:19
carogatomreyn: I've looked at the script, looks good. Will try this as well.14:22
carogaMaybe this will solve my issues.14:22
tomreyncaroga: suspend to ram instead of to disk is probably a setting, i'm not sure where to set this, though. the gnome "settings" application has "power" and there you can only decide to "suspend" (or power down, or do nothing).14:27

lafleurdubien_Their "fix" is to blame 18.04 for having libebml version 1.3.5 in the default repo. VLC's solution is that everyone upgrade from 18.04 to 19.04 to fix it https://twitter.com/videolan/status/115396597101256294415:40
tomreynsid21g: there is a memory allocation issues: "mtrr_cleanup: can not find optimal value" "please specify mtrr_gran_size/mtrr_chunk_size" - this article explains how to work around this (which is usually a mainboard firmware issue): http://my-fuzzy-logic.de/blog/index.php?/archives/41-Solving-linux-MTRR-problems.html15:43
tomreynsid21g: an easier approach may be to look for a mainboard firmware upgrade15:43

tomreyn(V1.08)15:47
sid21gtomreyn: How should I go about it? Update to the latest firmwave and then work around the firmware issue or as I believe the first will fix the second?15:49
sid21glafleurdubien_: if there is a dependency outside then it should be okay to close it, but I really thought it stand fixed in the overall terms.15:50
tomreynsid21g: well the idea of upgrading the firmware would be that it has fixes which were not present in the firmware version you have now.15:51
sid21gtomreyn: got it! Also the package is a Windows executable15:51
tomreynsid21g: but that's something you should verify after upgrading. there are aslo acpi issues regarding CPU tables, so a firmware upgrade seems like a really good idea.15:52
tomreynsid21g: i don't have a way to convert windows executables into native linux ones, i'm afraid.15:52
sid21gtomreyn: In that case as I have dual boot I should simply go there and run the file15:53
tomreynsid21g: that's probably a good approach then, yes15:54
sid21gtomreyn: Hopefully, maybe after installing the exe journalctl would really narrow it down15:55
tomreynsid21g: good luck, ping me when you got a new journal log after the firmware upgrade.15:55
sid21gtomreyn: I definitely will.15:56
sid21gIs there a way to keep Konversation IRC connected? I always have to add the IRC groups and chat history is lost too.15:57

sid21g(y)15:58
tomreynsid21g: but it may be able to restore logs from the past conversation.15:58

tomreynAlbertoP: the reason i asked about "serious" (criticality) is that if there is a bug at this level, it may be possible to convince a security team member to handle it if no volunteer is available to do it.16:21
AlbertoPtomreyn, essentially a couple of issues are serious. The others are cross-site scripting issues, which require the user to lack of care (not that it does not happen).16:22

vadiquetomreyn, what is such beast? I just clicked in "ubuntu software"16:51
vadiqueinstalling via apt-get would be better?16:52
tomreynvadique: i don't know what would be better, you choose.16:53
tomreyn"ubuntu software" can install both16:53
tomreynuse synaptic if you want a GUI to only install apt packages.16:54
tomreynor just apt / apt-get16:54
tomreyn!snap16:54

vadiqueyeah I see16:54
vadiquewow, apt-get installed one works16:55

dybtHey. I've been having a problem with git failing when I try to clone a repositories over a certain size (error: RPC failed; curl 56 GnuTLS recv error (-9): Error decoding the received TLS packet). When I try the same on a fresh docker container with ubuntu 1904 it works fine however, so I've thinking its possibly a discrepency between package versi17:08
dybtons. Is there any easy way to check whether any dependencies of git (or more likely dependencies of libgnutls) are being contrained to a certain version by another package?17:08
tomreynSlumlord_: you're welcome. should this issue remain, please come back for more assistence17:08
tomreyndybt: https://github.com/tomreyn/scripts#foreign_packages can help you identify packages and package versions you shouldn't have installed which can break the apt dependency resolver17:09
tomreyndybt: whch ubuntu release are you inquiring about there?17:09

sid21glet me detect my system from Lenovo site maybe?17:11
tomreynsid21g: "requires elevation" means you need to run this process with elevated permissions, i.e. as Administrator. Move over to ##windows for windows support.17:13
sid21gtomreyn: got it17:13
tomreyn"detect my system from Lenovo site" may also work after installing a lot of privacy invasive software, i guess.17:14
dybttomreyn: I'll have a go with foreign_packages thanks. Though I don't think theres any dependency conflict or anything - it seems to be an ongoing issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/git/+bug/1766962) but the fact it works fine in a fresh docker instance makes me think theres something I've installed that effected17:15
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1766962 in git (Ubuntu) "git clone fails with "An unexpected TLS packet was received" error" [Undecided,New]17:15
sid21gtomreyn: hahaha that was gem17:15

uaare there some big differences between booting from livecd and system installed on disk ? i have 18.04 livecd which does start properly using pcie graphics but after installing it on disk it just wont boot with the very same graphic card but only with integrated card. ive tried setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT  = "nomodeset"  in /etc/default/grub and then running update-grub but that doesnt help.19:05
lordcirth_ua, what graphics card and kernel version?19:06
uaradeon 5570 default kernel 18.04 i think 4.1519:07
ua18.04.1 *19:08
uatho its not consumer hardware, its ibm server19:09

tomreyn18.04.2 is current, and new installers are produced (and should be preferred) with every minor release.19:11

uaok then, thanks. i will install it tomorrow and see if disk install boots properly with pcie graphic card19:12
uabut still, what could be the reason that livecd does boot properly but not disk install19:13
tomreynua: different package versions is one possible reason. i think there are also some other minor differences between installer/live and readily installed systems.19:14
uaok19:15
tomreynua: it does happen somewhat regularly that someone runs into this issue (mostly bit not only when they use nvidia hardware, i think).19:15
tomreyn*but19:16
uaah okay, i was thinking that it might have something to do hardware being ibm server19:16
uaok im running apt upgrade, I'll see if it boots after that eh19:17
tomreynif you're using the desktop installer then i'm assuming this is amd64 hardware, right?19:18
uayep19:18
tomreynthen i don't expect it to be due to ibm hardware19:19

tomreynpretty much all desktops now use 3d acceleration features via compositing. gnome-shell is somewhat heavy on this. consider using a different graphical desktop if you also want to do application level acceleration.19:30

OerHeksdid you run update-grub after that?19:57
uayeah19:58
OerHeksoke, just checking.19:58
tomreynua: shift is when you bios boot. if you uefi boot, you need to hit escape repeatedly.19:58
tomreyni don't know how you boot though.19:59

JimBuntuemOne, not much to understand, various zombie systems out there, try to connect to anything they can.20:47
lapionhmm whenever I have a fixed local address set in nmapplet however as of recently route 169.254.0.0 gets added and I cannot remove it anymore20:48
lapionand it's not possible to ping the router.20:50
=== NickBusey6 is now known as NickBusey
guntbertlapion: usually you get that address when the DHCP server does not answer - might be a cabling problem20:59
lapionguntbert, I have dhcp disabled only manual ip addresses21:03
o0zelapion, pretty sure its not set fixed atm. does your fixed address show up in 'ip addr' at the intended interface ? fyi you are referencing an APIPA address at this moment which usually is assigned  when a DHCP was tried but failed.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link-local_address21:07
o0ze*DHCP request21:08
lapiono0ze, my fixed address shows up21:08
o0zelapion, what does route show in relation to network segment of the fixed address ?21:10
o0ze'ip route'21:11
guntbertlapion: one idea to see what is happening: look at the output of    nmcli21:11
leftyfbemOne: why is your machine publicly accessible?21:14
leftyfbemOne: and define "connected" via what port/service? What services are you running on this machine?21:14
james_browni set my sshd_config file to PasswordAuthentication no21:20
leftyfb!who | james_brown21:22
ubottujames_brown: As you can see, this is a large channel. If you're speaking to someone in particular, please put their nickname in what you say (use !tab), or else messages get lost and it becomes confusing :)21:22
james_browni was asking you all21:22
leftyfbjames_brown: you didn't ask a question21:22
OerHeksI read just a statement, no Question21:23
james_brownleftyfb so "Why is that?" is not a question?21:23
leftyfbjames_brown: that is a question ... one you did not ask21:23
james_brownleftyfb james_brown  00:21:0121:24
james_brownleftyfb but anyways im not here to argue, just curious about this case21:24
leftyfbjames_brown: Lets go back to 2.5 hours ago when you initially asked a question. What other authentication methods have you attempted to setup?21:24
lapionsorry I was gone for a couple of secs21:25
lapionoops minutes...21:25
james_brownleftyfb only key pair generated by puttygen21:26
leftyfbjames_brown: ok, and has that worked at all at any point in time?21:26
leftyfbjames_brown: ok, can you verify that the public key is setup on your server properly? Can you verify that the private key is setup properly on your client?21:27
james_brownleftyfb yes, i have saved the public key on the linux machine and the private key on the windows as a pkk21:27
leftyfbjames_brown: was it ever working without a password at all?21:27
james_brownleftyfb and i am indeed able to connect without a pw when pageant is running21:27
leftyfbjames_brown: ok, then the problem is solved21:27
james_brownleftyfb but as soon as i kill pageant and try to open a new connection, it will prompt with a pw21:28
leftyfbjames_brown: correct, because there is no configured private key to authenticate with21:28
leftyfbjames_brown: does it let you in with the correct password?21:28
james_brownleftyfb yes21:28
leftyfbjames_brown: did you restart the server after making your change to the sshd_config?21:29
james_brownleftyfb what i thought is that if i configure sshd_config to disable pw authentication it should not prompt in any case21:29
james_brownleftyfb i did not21:29
james_brownleftyfb i will try rn21:29
leftyfbjames_brown: by server, I mean the ssh service21:29
james_brownleftyfb i thought as much21:29
james_brownleftyfb ok it works as expected now! will remember to restart the service if i make config changes next time21:32
james_brownleftyfb thanks a bunch!21:32
leftyfbnp21:32
OerHeks:-)21:32
tomreynua: any improvements?21:36
lapionso problem got solved by rebooting..21:36
lapionreally annoying21:36
uatomreyn, sadly no21:36
lapionallmost feels like the wind is blowing again21:36
tomreynua: what else did you try, which kernel and X are you running now?21:37
ua4.1821:37
uafrom hwe21:37
tomreynua: Xorg, too?21:37
uayeah21:37
uaor at least ive installed it21:37
ualol21:37
uai have to go sleep, its almost midnight in here21:38
tomreynua: you'd need to reboot or restart some service (i actually forgot which, not just gdm, i think)21:38
tomreynua: ok, post a log the other day and repeat your issue then21:39
cgi777Is there a way to run a X server on an ubuntu on a remote VM?21:39
uatomreyn, i think its something wrong with grub2 or that stupid radeon driver21:39
cgi777I am trying to run browsers headless21:39
uatomreyn, "no ums support in radeon module"  thats only thing ive found in dmesg so far21:39
uahavent done that one >  journalctl -b | nc termbin.com21:40
tomreynua: when it gets stuck on the desktop background again, switch to a tty, login there and run    journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999   to post your log21:40
uaah the point is id doesnt get to the desktop or even ubuntu logo21:40
tomreynua: ums is user mode switching, you'd get this message if you booted with !nomodeset21:41
uait doesnt*21:41
uait looks like it crashes right on/after grub21:41
uai cant even use shift to display grub menu21:41
tomreynua: so switching tty's just gives you a black screen without text?21:41
uayes black screen but machine reboots after few seconds21:42
tomreynua: oh it reboots by itself?21:42
uayes21:42
tomreynthat's new info21:42
uasorry shoulda write it earlier21:43
uashould have written21:43
ualol21:43
uaim thinking21:43
tomreynthen you need to make sure your hardware is generally in good shape. run a memtest overnight, cpu burn etc.21:43
uacould using livecd to boot installed system work?21:43
uatomreyn, it works 100%21:43
uaditto for graphic card21:44
uait all works21:44
uaalso everything just works when starting 18.04.1 as livecd21:44
uaits ridiculous21:44
cliluwIs there a tool like sha256sum for Blake2b?21:44
tomreynyou really should install ubuntu server. if you then still really want the graphical desktop running on this very system, then you can still install it.21:44
tomreynua: that was you can at least get proper logs from the installed system, install an ssh server, manage it remotely.21:45
tomreynua: ...and find out why it reboots on its own.21:45
tomreynmake sure the graphics card is properly powered, positioned and seated, too.21:45
uaemmm i dont need to do all that, it has very very weak onboard gpu and it does boot into wm over vga no problem21:46
uasrsly no problems with hardware whatsever21:46
uait does work as a livecd21:46
uafull acceleration on radeon driver21:46
uaah, also its not 5570 but 7350, i forgot which one was it21:47
ua7350 is just 25W so no problem even on pcie x821:47
tomreynif the system reboots by itself then there is a serious issue.21:48
ua19W *21:48
uayeah but how could it be if it just works on livecd21:48
uaits not hardware thats for sure21:48
tomreynthat's what you need to find out, and that's why you need logs.21:48
tomreyncliluw: python hashlib covers it21:49
uayeah, gonna get em first thing tomorrow21:49
uaim soo sleepy right now21:49
uatomreyn, see you tomorrow and thanks a lot :)21:49
tomreynua: can't promise we'll see tomorrow, but good luck, see you soon.21:49
tomreyncgi777: you could run an xvfb server and connect to that21:53
cliluwtomreyn: Depends on the version of Python. It requires a very new one.21:53
tomreyncliluw: surprisingly you need new software to use new hash functions21:55
tomreyncliluw: there's b2sum in coreutils, though21:56
emOneleftyfb: it is on my ubuntu server machine22:00
emOnethere are a bunch of ssh connections from god knows where22:00
OerHeksrunning an ssh service on standard ports, without fail2ban, and no limit to allowed connections, yeah, welcome to the internet22:01
emOneOerHeks: haha22:01
emOneOerHeks: random people bruteforcing?22:01
leftyfbemOne: yes22:02
OerHekssome play with shodan, an internet port scanner..22:02
leftyfbemOne: I hope you don't have password authentication enabled22:02
emOneleftyfb: how do I check?22:03
emOneoh.. do you mean if I have a password?22:03
emOneyes...22:03
leftyfbemOne: the fact that you're asking means you do22:03
emOneHA!22:03
OerHekshttps://www.linuxbabe.com/security/harden-ssh-server  and https://medium.com/@jasonrigden/hardening-ssh-1bcb99cd4cef are some hardenings ideas22:04
emOneshall I maybe use 2 factor authentication?22:04
leftyfbemOne: setup ssh keys. Disable password authentication. Run ssh on a non-standard port. If you always ssh in from the same ip address, either setup iptables to only allow ssh from that ip and/or specify the ip address in your public ssh key22:04
leftyfbemOne: please use the link OerHeks just posted and/or google for securing ssh22:04
leftyfbemOne: I would not recommend 2fa just yet. Not when you are just starting out22:05
emOneI am not connecting from the same IP22:05
leftyfbemOne: ok. Still follow the rest of the suggestions22:06
leftyfbemOne: also consider VPN and shut down public ssh access22:06
emOnegood idea. thank you. and thanks for the link OerHeks22:07
emOnehonestly I am not a big fan of public key authentication22:10
emOnewhat happens if I lose that key22:10
leftyfbdon't22:10
emOnepublic key authentication has always scared me for ssh22:10
emOne a lot22:11
emOne1. if the computer I am on breaks... I am out of luck22:11
leftyfbemOne: make a backup22:11
emOne2. It sounds like a key file can just be stolen .. while a pass can't22:11
leftyfbemOne: incorrect22:11
leftyfbemOne: also, a password can and will be bruteforced. A keypair will not be22:12
emOnewhy not pass and 2fa?22:12
leftyfbemOne: there are multiple other options given to you. Pick at least 322:12
emOneI do have fail2ban22:13
leftyfbplease read the links given to you22:14
emOnereading as we speak22:14
sarnold2fa is great if you can tolerate it22:15
leftyfbalso if you don't make a mistake setting it up22:16
leftyfbI say keep that one for last22:16
leftyfband make sure you have another way in to fix it22:16
puffNow this is odd.22:16
sarnoldhey puff :)22:16
emOneI understand. 2fa on ssh might be "dangerous" because it is easy to mess up,,, locking myself out for good22:16
puffsarnold: Hey.  So I'm trying to flash this quadcopter to 16.04.6 just to see, and now the BIOS boot option menu isn't showing the thumb drive.  Tried it with two different thumb drives.22:17
sarnoldpuff: argh :(22:18
tomreynpuff: maybe the iso you downloaded is broken? did you check the checksums?22:18
emOnemy toaster runs 18.04 .. get with the times22:23
emOne^puff22:23
sarnoldemOne: awesome toaster vendor, normally embedded folks like to tell people to use some ancient kernel with out of tree modules and newer stuff never works on it22:24
emOne:(22:24
emOnehttp://www.linuxscrew.com/2008/01/18/fun-windows-vs-linux-for-toasters/22:26
