pkcbrandon_im trying to enable intel turbo boost in studio controls but the option is greyed out and wont allow me to change it. pls help, im using to intel xeon x5675 cpus14:53
oerheksthis howto might help, not sure it gives control in Ubuntu Studio .. https://blog.christophersmart.com/2017/02/08/manage-intel-turbo-boost-with-systemd/15:01
sakrecoer[b]thanks rgh ! :)15:01
sakrecoer[b]I'm a sucker for stuff like Odin2 where the UI emulates the gear i'm used too :') (/me is old fart) I hope it sounds as good as it looks...15:05
sakrecoer[b]gah, i knew i should have waited until work was over before looking those names up haha15:05
pkcbrandon_i tried that already and it did not work15:08
OvenWerksThe xeon may not have Boost, or it may be turned of in the bios. If studio-controls has Boost settings greyed out, it means the control is not there to be set15:44
OvenWerkspkcbrandon_: The control we use to turn boost on and off is set by the kernel. So if the bios shows a boost setting and the kernel does not. this would be something that the mainline kernal does not recognize at least in the version ubuntu is using right now.15:46
pkcbrandon_bios setting is turned on. so is the kernel something i can fix or does this mean i gotta wait?15:48
OvenWerkspkcbrandon_: normally Boost in on by default unless turned off in bios. We control Boost because it is bad for low latency audio15:48
OvenWerkspkcbrandon_: are you sure boost is not working?15:49
OvenWerksif you monitor cpu speed does it never reach beyond rated speed?15:49
pkcbrandon_i just assume it wasnt because the option in the studio controls was off and freyed out15:50
pkcbrandon_greyed out15:50
OvenWerksI would not rely on that. if it is truned on in bios, it is probably running as the cpu controls it's own speed in most cases15:51
OvenWerksAs I said we are more concerned with turning it off than on.15:51
pkcbrandon_okay thanks. i do more video editing/rendering so what whould be best for me?15:52
OvenWerksI would want boost on for that15:53
pkcbrandon_my GPU is a nvidia quadro 400015:53
OvenWerkspkcbrandon_: do you have cpufreq installed?15:56
pkcbrandon_yes15:56
OvenWerksif I look at cpufreq-info -c 015:57
OvenWerkscurrent policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 3.60 GHz15:57
OvenWerksis with Boost on15:57
OvenWerksand current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 3.20 GHz15:58
OvenWerkswith boost off15:58
OvenWerksmy cpu is rated at 3.2G but boost allows upto 3.6G15:59
OvenWerkscpupower-gui may allow you to set max frequency higher too.16:01
pkcbrandon_thank you16:08
wonkodoes that all work the same way for AMD?17:36
wonkohardware limits: 2.20 GHz - 4.10 GHz17:36
wonkobut I know it can go further than 4.117:36
OvenWerkswonko: I do not know if controls shows anything meaningful for AMD.17:37
OvenWerksI also do not know if the kernel drivers for AMD work the same (I suspect not). I also think AMD allows the CPU much more control of CPU speed.17:39
wonkocpupower-gui and cpufreq-info all say 4.1 as the upper limit17:39
wonkohmm, so I need to watch cpu speed and run it hard to see what happens17:39
OvenWerkswonko: have you tried cpu-checker?17:40
wonkohow do I use that? There is a package by that name but no command by that name17:42
OvenWerksI have never used it :)17:43
wonkooh, cpu-checker gets you kvm-ok17:44
OvenWerksAlso use stress to load cpu cores17:44
OvenWerksActually there are a bunch of stress related packages available some may be easier to use than stress.17:45
wonkoI'm running a single thread test with sysbench and watching it with s-tui right now17:49
wonkoit looks like it doesn't go past 4.117:49
wonkolike even a tiny little bit17:49
OvenWerkswonko: normally with a boost like setup if one core is stressed with thge others idle, that core will over speed.17:50
OvenWerksit may be that if your cpu is in performance mode, over speeding is turned off17:50
wonkoyou mean the govenor?17:52
OvenWerksyes17:52
wonkowhich one do I want?17:52
wonkoondemand?17:52
OvenWerksthat is probably the only other one17:52
OvenWerksIt may vary also by which kernel you use17:53
wonkowith ondemand it still doesn't seem to go above 4.117:53
OvenWerksit would be interesting to know what speeds and governors are available with the generic kernel and studio-controls not installed17:55
OvenWerkswhat driver does cpufreq say you have? Mine says intel_pstate17:56
OvenWerksI am guessing you have something different17:56
OvenWerksmy son's AMD says driver: acpi-cpufreq18:00
wonkoyeah, same here18:00
OvenWerksI think that is completely software based. I think that is why there is no over boost available18:00
wonkoHmmm18:03
wonkonot super thrilled about that. :-D18:03
OvenWerksYeah18:03
wonkoOk, so I'm running 5.8 which has the AMD CPPC stuff in it (which I do see, cores 4 and 10 are the fast ones and a single threaded sysbench will bounce between them.18:09
wonkobut that doesn't seem to be enough to let it go past 4.118:09
wonkoHmm, there is a much newer bios18:11
wonkoI may way want to install that18:11
OvenWerksAMD has been slow at providing kernel modules to control cpu governing18:16
OvenWerksThe only one available is the one you have18:16
chip_luxury_ewa[HI18:22
chip_luxury_ewa[whats up?18:22
OvenWerkswonko: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.14/admin-guide/pm/cpufreq.html#frequency-boost-support18:27
OvenWerkswonko: I know this is for an older kernel but shows that AMD should allows over speeding with the boost control.18:28
OvenWerkswonko: also read: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=AMD-New-CPUFreq-CPPC18:32
OvenWerkswonko it seems AMD is working on something. We await amd_cpufreq as a driver unless you want to roll your own kernel.18:33
wonkoso, it looks like some bios options got tweaked (I did update the bios though while I was at it)18:35
wonkothat auto-tuning bullshit seems to have been run (there was a stupid windows utility that could tweak that)18:35
wonkoand it was locking the cpu to 4.118:35
wonkoI'm now hitting 4.3 easily18:35
OvenWerksusefull18:35
wonkoit's so stupid18:35
wonkoI like ASUS motherboards, but their utilities are all univerally garbage18:36
wonko*universally18:36
wonkoAnyway, that was a fun little rabbit hole. :)18:37
wonkoand I'm on performance18:38
wonkoand hitting 4.318:38
wonkoso that's all good18:38
wonkohardware limits: 2.20 GHz - 3.80 GHz18:38
wonkothat's ausing that the upper limit actually went down. :)18:38
wonkoanyway, gotta run, bbiab18:39
