axsuulMy NFS network share seems to be a bit slow, with default options it only transfers 100 MB/sec over the internet. Is that pretty typical? Both origin and destination have gigabit internet00:08
sbrazaxsuul: unless you meant Mb/s, you can't really expect a lot more over 1Gbit00:10
axsuulGotcha thanks00:10
tomreynnshire: i didn't see a clear description of the problem you're trying to solve. is it that on a single system where apt is accessing http://us.archive.ubuntu.com over IPv6, data transfer bandwidth is low?00:13
axsuulsbraz: actually I believe the transfer rate is 8 MB/sec which sounds more right, not 100 MB/sec. It takes 2 hours to transfer about 50 GB worth of data00:16
axsuulFeels bottlenecked somewhere00:16
sbrazaxsuul: yeah that's 56 mbit/s, way too little for gbit00:17
sbrazi'd first try to play with iperf3 between both servers to make sure nfs really is the problem00:17
axsuulAh ok thanks00:19
sbrazaxsuul: i have to go, good luck with nfs :)00:24
axsuulhttps://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/PWeV9h3g/00:24
sbrazthat's a bit slow indeed yes00:24
axsuulsbraz: got these results, https://0x0.st/-5jr.txt00:24
axsuulhmm does this mean something is bottlenecked?00:24
sbraztry it the other way round too with -R00:24
sbrazand maybe try to add more connections with -P1000:24
sbrazbut maybe there's just bad peering between both servers00:25
sbrazi assume those are different ISPs?00:25
axsuuladding a -R gives me this, interesting: https://0x0.st/-5js.txt00:25
axsuulyep, different ISPs00:25
sbrazare those in europe? america? asia? both machines are on the same continent?00:26
axsuulboth in US, one in Utah, the other in Los Angeles00:26
TJ-okaaaaa: the bug looks fine, it'll likely get picked up for the new 22.04 dev cycle00:26
axsuulsbraz: thanks for your help if you need to go however00:27
sbrazaxsuul: you could traceroute / mtr and count ore review hops, see where the traffic goes but maybe both ISPs don't really cooperate :P00:28
sbrazor*00:28
axsuulyea that sounds maybe it's the issue, the "server" is on a residential ISP, while the "client" is in a datacenter00:28
axsuulso could be peering00:28
sbrazin any case i doubt nfs is the problem00:28
* axsuul would putting a CDN in front of it help (such as Cloudflare)?00:29
axsuulto help with peering, that is00:29
sbrazi'm off for real, good luck00:29
axsuulcya!00:29
axsuulthanks00:29
tomreynyou could also try tcp vs udp00:30
tomreynaxsuul: ^ and sec=krb5p might be another option (in case it's a middleware box that's slowing things down), though for encryption you might actually prefer SSHFS.00:37
axsuulthanks will give that a try00:44
tomreynoh and a vpn might be yet another option00:46
tomreyneither directly between the two hosts or, if you confirm peering to be the problem, through another network00:47

no_gravityHello! I read that when you install KDE via "apt install kde-plasma-desktop" it comes with applications like a browser, a file manager etc. Why is that? Why not use Firefox and gedit that came with Ubuntu?08:31
ThinkT510it is a meta-package so it can't assume what you already have installed. someone could have installed it without already having a desktop environment08:33
no_gravityThinkT510: Ok, but why is there no package that comes without applications?08:33
ThinkT510kde is also qt based and firefox and gedit are gtk based08:34
ThinkT510if you know exactly what you want you can install them separately08:35
no_gravityThinkT510: Yes, but how do I get KDE without the applications in the first place.08:35
ThinkT510by installing the required packages separately08:36
no_gravity"the required packages"?08:36
ThinkT510yes, you need to know the package names08:36
no_gravityI wonder if "apt install kde-plasma-desktop --no-install-recommends" would work.08:37

sanzI'm on Ubuntu 20.04LTS. I'm used to Synatic package manager. But apt is now the default one. So I'm having and using both randomly and it seems everything is fine. But sometimes I feel there could be conflict between them, as I'm seeing broken dependency in Synaptic more often. Shall I abandon synaptic?10:00
lotuspsychjesanz: synaptic should not interfere with apt, what kind of conflicts did you notice?10:02
sanz I'm seeing broken dependency in Synaptic much more often10:03
sanzthan before10:03
sanzI've been using ubuntu for 14 years10:03
sanzjust upgraded to 20.04 months ago10:04
lotuspsychjesanz: dependency issues is when users start to install manual debs or ppa's and then conflict with packages from the repos10:04
lotuspsychjesanz: maybe you should doublecheck your sources.list ?10:04
KBarsanz apt has always been the default. synaptic is just a graphical (gtk+) front end to apt10:05
sanzhmm... right to the point.10:05
KBarand apt itself is a high-level cli to the more low-leevl dpkg10:06
KBarthey should not cause problems to each other10:06

sanzsound reasonable. so maybe I should switch to another repos10:07

KBarsanz perhaps your system didnt upgrade successfully/fully10:08
KBarnow you have broken dependencies, i.e. some packages are stuck in the old version10:09
sanzKBar: Sorry I did not put it right. I just got a new hardware and had a new installation10:09
sanzI was using 18.04 before, so I said "upgrade"10:10
KBarso is that a fresh install or upgrade?10:10

hid3Hello everyone. I am doing "do-release-upgrade" in non-interactive mode. How do I prevent/exclude a single service from being autorestarted during the upgrade process?11:20
weedmicdo you mean mark a package as "taboo"? hid311:23
hid3no... I mean, when the upgrade is going, it automatically restarts some services (for example, upon libc6 upgrade, if memory serves me right). Among that service is 'supervisorctl', which in turn launches other applications, some of which consume CPU and perform disk intensive activities, which slows down the upgrade process by a lot11:25
hid3so in this case, I want to somehow prevent 'supervisor' be restarted during upgrade11:25

tomreyn!ot | deksar: nice technology POC, but21:33
ubottudeksar: nice technology POC, but: #ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please register with NickServ (see /msg ubottu !register) and use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks!21:33
deksarSorry. Here comes my question: Planning to move a box of mine, from CentOS to Ubuntu. That'll only run: nginx, php, mysql server and nothing else. A webserver. Should I run Ubuntu or Ubuntu-Server? Do they differ a lot, when it comes to finding packages?21:35
Faultdeksar: you probably want Server then, it just doesn't include any of the desktop stuff which you wouldn't need for that deployment anyway21:38
deksarFault: Thank you. 2nd: How easy it is, to update system and fetch/install security packages on Ubuntu Server? Under FreeBSD, I use freebsd-update fetch install, and under OpenBSD, a "syspatch" command is enough to do it.21:39
tomreyn!uptodate21:40
ubottuTo ensure you have all the latest known patches and security updates for your ubuntu installation, please update with the following command: `sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade`. See also !upgrades and !security; you may also need to run `apt full-upgrade`.21:40
Faultdeksar: very easy, same procedure but just a different set of commands 🙂21:40
diniwedtomreynk, ubottu : thanks couldn't find them21:42

deksarFault: For how many years will the latest Ubuntu-Server version be supported?21:56
Faultsame as the mainline version I believe21:58
Bashing-om!esm | dek21:59
ubottudek: Canonical offers paid extended security support for end-of-life LTS releases through the Ubuntu Advantage program. For more information, see https://ubuntu.com/esm . ESM is not an Ubuntu community offering; please direct questions about it to Canonical directly.21:59
tomreyndeksar: there are LTS (long term support(ed)) releases, the latest is 20.04 LTS (from 04 of 2020, thus the name). they have 5 years of public support, and you can andd another 5 with ESM (see above). those are suually what you'd want on a server. there are also intermediate / normal releases, those get 9 months of support only.22:02
tomreynthere is also the #ubuntu-server channel here.22:03
deksarYeah, I'm there right now. Thank you very much guys, for truly useful info and links. Got tons to read. :) <322:04
deksarQuick question: Why did Ubuntu need to have two different SERVER versions? Ubuntu Server 20.04.3 LTS and 21.10 (only 9 months of support)? I mean, when it comes to "server" thing, having the later one seems unusual. Where do these versions actually differ in terms of packages and OS itself?22:06
ravagein general the server versions are the same as the desktop version with the same name. there is a server kernel and a server install22:08
tomreynserver kernel?22:09
ravageyou can turn any server install into a desktop installation with a few commands22:09
ravagethere used to be one22:09
ravagedid they get rid of it? :D22:09
ravagei never used itg22:09
ravageok. my bad. no kernel. so we are down to the "fancy" server installer i dont like :D22:10
tomreynthere are ones for public clouds, and a kernel package for vm's, i think (but i think that also uses the default kernel)22:10
Faultdeksar: even-numbered versions(/years) are LTS releases, odd are not. Hence the differing support durations.22:10
deksargreat tips :) thanks.22:11
Fault👍22:11
ravagemy personal opinion is to keep your servers on LTS unless you need some new fancy stuff only provided in the versions between22:12
Bashing-om^^ and now Intel CPUs: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Ubuntu-Intel-IoT-Optimized .22:12
ravageoh and there is #ubuntu-server for more support about it :)22:13
deksar"unless you need some new fancy stuff " <- oh, that's me, an OpenBSD guy -> disabled everything by the default. Keyboard barely types :P - no HT neither on CPU.22:13
deksarGoing to try Ubuntu-Server. I hope it comes with nothing by the default. I'm an analogue, manual guy. Love to add what I need, one-by-one, myself.22:15
ravageyou get systemd :P22:15
deksarReally? Systemd still alive on Ubuntu by the default?22:16
ravagei dont see that to change in the near future22:16
cbreakis there any serious alternative?22:16
cbreakI don't think so.22:16
deksarcbreak: There was a Linux distro, everything was manual..22:16
cbreakyeah. and it sucked.22:17

NikHey guys! I did the big stupid and now my laptop is not booting. :/ Had a Win 10 install on a laptop, partitioned the SSD, added a Linux (Ubuntu Desktop 20.04) install onto that, it came with its own boot menu that allowed me to select which system to boot to. In a stroke of extraordinary genius I deleted the Linux partition while working on Windows (because I thought I didn't need it anymore). Now it only boots to some sort of grub CLI.23:09
NikAnything I can do to boot to my Windows partition?23:09
oerheksboot the ubuntu iso again, and set the boot flag on windows ... or boot windows iso, and choose repair23:10
NikAlright, let me try that. Thank you23:11
oerhekssmall howto; https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-make-a-partition-bootable-with-diskpart23:12
NikSo I can do that from any lightweight Linux system as long as it has a CLI, does not need to be the original Ubuntu installer?23:13
NikBecause I think I don't have any thumb drives large enough for a full Ubuntu Desktop iso at hand right now23:13
oerheksyes23:13
NikAlright, thank you again23:14
oerheksor alternatively your windows iso23:14
NikI don't know if there is supposed to be a built in one, but the thumb drive is not large enough for a Windows iso either23:15
