enigma9o7[m]I'm consdiering it, thanks.01:57
bobdobbsI'm using gnome on ubuntu 22.04. When I want download a file from a the web on either chrome or firefox, a dialogue pops up asking me for a location to download to. The dialogue gives me some options. Back in ubuntu 20.04 I could add locations to this dialogue.02:07
bobdobbsThis could be really handy for when I'm working on a project in a certain subdirectory. I could add the subdir to the list of candidate locations.02:08
bobdobbsHas this feature been removed from the current version of gome?02:08

bobdobbsI used to be able to drag-and-drop folders to the sidebar. Looks like that particular feature is gone.02:14
leftyfbthat also works for me02:15
bobdobbsleftyfb: I can't add the location to the sidebar using anything I see on the upper-right. But I can do it by right-clicking on a subfolder and selecting an option. That'll do.02:16
enigma9o7[m]isnt bobdobbs more of a slackware enthusiast?02:16

I need a fb-device per GPU for multiseat and it seems vesa-driver gives only one. How can I fix this? (Its probably caused by some old workaround to get my GPU working at all, when installed nvidia drivers were too old to actually support my GPU at the time.)03:43

rayAh okay! I'll try and give as much information as I can. I have the common old problem of 'sound not working'... before anyone roll's their eyes, I have done a fair amount of troubleshooting myself (i'm not a novice!). On my machine I am having trouble getting sound out of the Build-in Audio Analogue Stereo device. It has two ports, in build speakers and headphones. The Speakers work fine, when swapping to Headphone port11:29
raythere is no sound, it's the same device on the system, just a different channel. My set up works fine as I can switch to Windows partition and all works as anticipated, so I can rule out a hardware issue. I have reinstalled pulseaudio and I am getting the same results. On the pulseaudio monitor I can see the meter display under the device and it is accurate, it is working fine and it reacts to volume controls from the audio11:29
raymonitor too. I have loaded up alsamixer and I can see that the channels are not muted and are enabled with 100% volume. I've really just run out of places to look for audio settings. If anyone has any ideas of where I can look for more audio settings that would be really awesome.11:29
josmalaray pulseaudio volumecontrol?11:31
josmalaThat's the only mixer that has worked with my audio problems.11:33
raypulseaudio volume control was my first place to check :) device is enabled, unmuted and I can see the meter jiggle around and respond to volume controls11:33
josmalaSometimes restarting pulsedaudio again, after I've logged in has worked.11:34
rayi've given it a force restart but still no dice, i've had to reboot a few times to load into Windows partition to rule our hardware issue anyway. Thanks for the suggestions!11:38
rayoh my god, i have just found the issue?? So random. My internal Microphone was muted...? I unmuted the internal microphone on the regular settings page and the audio just jumped back in. This had me stumped for the past 2 hours... thank you for your help josmala11:40
TvL2000Hey all! I have installed an ubuntu-22.04 server to act as router. I enabled dhcp on the WAN interface, which works fine, however dns lookups don't work. If I manually specify the dns server I got from dhcp, it works. I'm not sure what's going wrong (https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/yGtwZdggX2/)11:42
rayI've never heard of the input microphone device being muted causing one headphone audio channel to mute too? They surely can't be linked! haha11:42

MJCDthanks anyway xo14:26
ograMJCD, well, if yu can live with the ancient version from that archive (i guess there is a reason why certbot picked snap as their default format on ubuntu nowdays)14:42

MJCDAnd i'd LIKE to use the snapd method14:49
MJCDbut it was giving me like no referential information to go on14:50
MJCDand i'm not resetting the entire instance just for that heh14:50
MJCDit'll need to be rebuilt when I get a spec together anyway :))14:50
* MJCD wants to eventually write said spec in puppet14:51
MJCDor something that puppet acts upon14:51
ChalkyNote, Ihave tried GPart but as there is no space immediately around the partition, it is not able to help.14:51
MJCDChalky: butte whye14:52
TvL2000I think that in order to resize that partition, you would need to boot from a livecd to move the partitions around14:52
MJCDIt's more complicated than that tool will be able to handle and you'll end up with a mess would be my bet14:53
Chalkyah, ok I will give that a go.   Live CD and still use GPart.  thx14:54
MJCDthe literal sectors need to be "physically" moved14:54
MJCDjust make sure to do a backup first14:54
ChalkyWill do14:54
MJCDbecause it's entirely likely you'll end up having to go with plan b; starting with a new file table/install ^_^14:55
ChalkyMmmm I was hoping to avoid that option.14:55
ograin either case, make sure you have properly working backups of your data 😉14:56
ChalkySure thx14:57
ChalkyIt's not this machine, so I can continue to commuicate.14:58
MJCD10111015:09
jhutchinsChalky: Since you're going to make a backup before messing with your root partition anyway, it makes good sense to just repartition the disk and restore the backup.  It's a lot faster too.15:11
MJCDmmmmm yeah can be easier said than done, situationally haha15:11

OnceMeits maybe because I have two ports as part of one output17:12
OnceMeboth are analog signals through 3.5mm jack17:13
ericusleftyfb I need to setup letsencrypt and a reverse proxy17:25
ericusthat's why I opted for a clean install17:25
leftyfbericus: yeah, I wouldn't use the snap for that17:25
leftyfbor the build-in install17:25
leftyfbif they're one in the same17:25
ericusbuilt-in doesn't come with letsencrypt it seems17:30
ograericus, if it is the snap, the docs are at https://github.com/nextcloud-snap/nextcloud-snap17:36
ogra(you can sheck with "snap list" if the snap was in fact installed by the installer)17:37
ericusthanks ogra17:38
delluserhi folks. my work provided me a new laptop. i asked for a thinkpad and they gave me a dell. the webcam doesn't seem to work. i'm using 20.04.17:51
delluserhere is various bits: https://0bin.net/paste/XSlhOnIb#RaH79BiDY4Bm16M9lffn82dALfUDqbCn6tgB6QwCgOv17:51
InPhasedelluser: Step one, try 22.04?17:51
InPhaseYou might as well begin with the latest LTS version.17:52
mybalzitchor try the HWE kernel first17:52
leftyfbdelluser: also, shouldn't your work's IT department be supporting their assets?17:52
delluserthey actually installed the OS along with a load of extra third party tools like AV and VPN and such so i'm hesistant to just wipe it17:52
InPhasedelluser: Well you can upgrade without wiping.17:53
InPhaseAlso, hahah, AV.17:53
delluseri know. stupid right17:53
leftyfbdelluser: then I would really suggest your IT department get the webcam working17:53
delluserit's I.T. what do you expect17:53
lotuspsychjeInPhase: that advice doesnt make sense, a webcam should also be working on 20.0417:53
InPhaselotuspsychje: For most standard webcams, yes.17:54
Maikall depends on how new the hardware is17:54
InPhaselotuspsychje: But hardware issues tend to come and go with major versions, so there's a good chance it just goes away.17:54
delluserseeing as the webcam is detected and all the stuff seems to be there. i'd like to know if there is actually a driver or if it's just detecting it.17:54
ravagedelluser, you could start with the output of "lsusb" and paste the line that shows your webcam :)17:54
delluserravage: see the 0bin paste above17:55
ravageoh17:55
ravage"various bits"17:55
ravagedidnt see that :)17:55
delluserhttps://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id=usb:0c45-6a0917:55
Maikalso upgrading at this point is not recommended and i agree that the IT department of the company should take care of it17:55
InPhasedelluser: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1390420/camera-not-working-on-fresh-install-of-20-0417:55
delluseryeah that's how i found the linux-hardware link17:56
delluserIT dept are useless. unless you know the magic words to get them to buy me a thinkpad lol17:57
Maikthey gave you this machine with Ubuntu thus they should take care of it17:57
ravageyou could at least try the 22.04 live usb and see if it would make any difference17:57
delluseryeah but i don't want to ship the machine all the way back to germany from ireland just so they can fix a webcam17:58
InPhasedelluser: It seems to work in 22.04, which you can verify by seeing people complaining about other problems they're having with it beyond it just working:  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1407767/terrible-webcam-resolution-in-dell-precision-5560-and-ubuntu-22-0417:58
oerheksdelluser, open cheese, and trottle resolution down 1 step17:58
oerheksworked for my dell and hp17:58
ravageyou can even boot any other linux VM and pass through the usb device17:58
ravagemaybe you find a combination of distribution and kernel that works17:59
delluseroerheks: it selected ok but it still gives the blank image17:59
ravageresults for 0c45:6a09 are not very promising really18:00
leftyfbdelluser: what model laptop?18:00
delluserleftyfb: Precision 356018:02
lotuspsychjeInPhase: there's currently a cheese bug open on 22.04, so thats not gonna help neither18:02
InPhasedelluser: From those askubuntu links I think the right strategy is to try the 22.04 upgrade and attempt 640x480 resolution if high res also doesn't work for you.  There are other steps you can try with v4lctl in a script to tweak things like color balance and contrast to get a good quality low res image, which would be sufficient for zooming.18:02
delluseri booted it to a 20.04 latest image i have on a usb stick to test and that has the same issue. i suppose i could try burn a 22.04 and give that a go18:02
InPhaseYeah, a liveboot would be a good strategy to test it out without changes.18:03
leftyfbdelluser: isn't there a switch above the webcam that blocks it out for privacy?18:03
delluserso i guess if 22.04 doesn't work i just tell the IT folks to order me an external cam18:03
delluserlmao leftyfb . there is18:03
delluserand that worked18:03
delluseri am the useless one18:03
ravageheh18:03
InPhasedelluser: Also, solidarity and sympathies for "I asked for a thinkpad and got a dell".18:04
delluseri suspected there might be a camera cover but it wasn't overtly covering it and the switch looks like it's part of the clasp that closes the lid18:04
ravageglad the solution was easy :)18:04
InPhaselol.  Okay.18:04
InPhaseleftyfb: Bonus points for tech support skill.18:04
delluserthanks for the help folks. i would have been bashing my head across this one for probably hours and hours more if i didn't have the emotional and technical support of this channel. hahaha18:05
oerheks!cookie | leftyfb18:05
ubottuleftyfb: Wow! You're such a great helper, you deserve a cookie!18:05
jhutchinsdelluser: At least you didn't ship it back to Germany only to have them tell you it works fine and ship it back, with you still unable to use it.18:07
leftyfbjhutchins: I doubt the IT department would have figured it out ;)18:07
dellusercrisis: averted18:08
leftyfbwhat made it obvious to me, it showed up in lsusb and lshw just fine, no errors when trying to open it, just "blank image" and the fact that there weren't many results on google for it ... because it just works out of the box18:09
oerheksSo it was not a resolution issue, good laptop18:11
delluserit doesn't have full sized cursor keys tho :/18:12
delluserand no hardware mouse buttons18:12
ForeverNoob[m]Hi, updating after a kernel update is always a smart thing to do. I'm trying to think of a mechanism that notifies me when I need to reboot, but also after certain packages have been updated (for example, I'd definitely also want to restart certain services after they've been updated, like sshd) - Does `unattended-upgrades` offer such a feature or should I search for something else / roll my own solution?18:44
arraybolt3ForeverNoob: I believe Ubuntu takes care of at least SSHD automatically, as per this ServerFault answer: https://serverfault.com/questions/663023/upgrading-openssh-server-within-an-ssh-session18:47
ForeverNoob[m]oh that's good to know, thanks!18:48
ravageForeverNoob[m], you can check if /var/run/reboot-required exists18:48
ForeverNoob[m]ah that's pretty handy, ty18:50
sarnoldForeverNoob[m]: check out needrestart in https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/jammy-jellyfish-release-notes/2466818:55

sarnoldForeverNoob[m]: it probably exists for a decade or two before jammy :) it just happened to be an easy short description I knew of18:59
ForeverNoob[m]ooh nice19:03
ForeverNoob[m]sounds like pretty much what I need19:03
AlloysiousHi all- can anyone point me to some idiot guides for debugging a failing boot? I get ~6 sec into boot and then dmesg drops to me to a init terminal... nothing obvious in the things printed to screen. Is there a more verbose log somewhere?19:54
sarnolddmesg and journalctl are good starting points19:56
Alloysioushmm well dmesg just re-prints what was already on the screen during boot20:02
Alloysiousjournalctl is not found (can't access /dev/tty; job control turned off)20:03
sarnoldoh my20:04
Alloysiousyea, I make it about 5 seconds into kernel boot, the last message I get is 'Freeing unused kernel memory:', then dumped to (what I assume is) initrd console20:06
AlloysiousI guess I want a blaring red ERROR ERROR ERROR, but nothing stands out as unusual in the several hundred lines20:07
=== DD3my is now known as Lucas-76
=== Lucas-76 is now known as DD3my
Alloysiousnothing in /var/log is useful ... where to look next20:10
arraybolt3Alloysious: Do "ls /dev/sd*" and "ls /dev/vd*" and see if anything pops up. Maybe your disks aren't being found by the kernel.20:34
arraybolt3Alloysious: Also, if you could pastebin the contents of your grub.cfg file, that might give some clues. (You can boot from a live ISO, mount the rood drive pop open a terminal, then do "sudo su -", cd to the root drive, then do "cp boot/grub/grub.cfg /grub.cfg" followed by "chmod 0888 /grub.cfg". This will make a copy of your grub.cfg file, and you can then open it in a text editor, and copypaste its contents into a pastebin. Note that this may be a20:37
arraybolt3bad idea if you have sensitive information like security passwords in your grub.cfg file.)20:37
arraybolt3s/rood/root ^20:37
arraybolt3Agh, and change "chmod 0888 /grub.cfg" to "chmod 0777 /grub.cfg"20:39
sarnoldwhy executable?20:40
sarnoldwhy should everyone be able to write it?20:40
leftyfbAlloysious: I would suggest just trying to boot to the previous working kernel20:40
sarnoldoh good idea20:40
arraybolt3sarnold: No need, it's just an easy way to make it readable. I guess only 0666 is needed, but I do 0777 when I want all permissions for everything so I can for sure access something from a standard user. Makes it so you don't run into problems with other things, though it is superfluous here.20:41
arraybolt3And you could pare it down even further, but that takes brainpower...20:41
arraybolt3(I guess 0644 is all that would be needed?) It's just to make it so you can read a copy with a text editor so you can paste it. The original file is left untouched.20:42
janisozaurCan I expect gcc 11.3 out of the box in ubuntu 22.04? If so, any ideas for when to expect that?20:57
Bashing-om!info gcc jammy | janisozaur20:58
ubottujanisozaur: gcc (4:11.2.0-1ubuntu1, jammy): GNU C compiler. In component main, is optional. Built by gcc-defaults. Size 5 kB / 50 kB20:58
janisozaurI know that already, looking for a timeline when to expect 11.321:03
morganuwhere does hexchat keep its backscrolls?21:06
morganu20.0421:07
leftyfbmorganu: pretty sure it's in memory21:07
leftyfbmorganu: you are better off looking at it's logs21:07
morganuI asked in here how to concatenate some pdfs, actually over a hundred. Someone told me, maybe you.. leftyfb to use find -exec and I saved it in textedit but somehow I have an emplty file. Could you help me by telling me again?  (and I DID mean logs when I said backscroll. #ubuntu spills over the backscroll fast.)21:09
leftyfbmorganu: pastebin your script. Though really you might be better asking in #bash for such things21:10
morganuI kept this so maybe this is good enough. I "just" realized what was in this page.21:10
morganuhttps://www.baeldung.com/linux/find-exec-command21:10
AlloysiousWell, I guess this isn't a beginner question, but I'm not booting using grub, it's direct from u-boot. The kernel overrides I'm using are `console=ttyAMA0,115200 earlycon=pl011,mmio32,0x21c0000 default_hugepagesz=1024m hugepagesz=1024m hugepages=2 pci=pcie_bus_perf root=PARTUUID=30303030-01 rw rootwait`21:10
morganuI dont have a script. I havent made scripts in bash (yet) ever. leftyfb21:11
leftyfbAlloysious: what hardware is this on?21:11
Alloysiousaarch6421:11
leftyfbAlloysious: can you be more specific?21:11
morganuleftyfb,  (please cancel my question because I need to read this webpage.)21:12
Alloysiousyea, it's a ARM system-ready board from solidrun, the lx2 (honeycomb)21:14
Alloysiousill try and find a link21:14
morganuleftyfb, this page is way beyond me. I remember a command that partially was $ find -exec cat  ---- I have a ton of pdf's in a directory. I want one pdf that is them all.21:14
leftyfbAlloysious: I have no idea how to fix uboot. Maybe wipe it and start over?21:14
morganupdfunite didnt like my pdf's which were created on a mac.21:14
Alloysiousfair enough21:15
Bashing-ommorganu: For your thinking purpose - this channel is logged: https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2022/05/22/%23ubuntu.txt .21:15
leftyfbmorganu: I don't know that you're going to find an OSS/free program that will read any pdf and spit out text in any consistent/parsable manner21:16
Alloysiousso I guess the answer is if you fail booting before systemd, you have no further information other than what has already been echoed to terminal?21:16
arraybolt3Alloysious: Do you have an init program in your kernel command line? If not, that would probably cause something like this.21:18
arraybolt3Alloysious: (At least, it did back when I was fighting with a similar issue, but I just remembered that modern Linux might not behave that way...)21:18
arraybolt3Alloysious: In my experience, these sort of problems are caused because of a missing root disk, a missing init program, or wonky hardware configuration. There might be other things that would cause the problem, but those are what I would look for first. If you can't find an sd*, mmcblk*, hd*, vd*, or nvme* device in your /dev, your system probably can't find the root disk.21:21
arraybolt3Alloysious: (The * is a placeholder - you'd actually find devices named things like sda, mmcblk0, hda, vda, nvme0, or stuff similar to that.)21:22
AlloysiousHmm.. I will investigate. I doubt its related to root disk, as it's booting from it (and I see `Mounted root (ext4 filesystem)` before crash), but something after that makes the kernel very unhappy21:23
AlloysiousI guess it must be some firmware or other init issue21:25
arraybolt3Alloysious: As odd as it may sound, it's entirely possible for the bootloader to be able to access the disk, but the kernel not. The bootloader loads the kernel from disk, the kernel loads, and then the kernel can't find the very disk it was loaded from. I've had this happen to me in Puppy Linux within a VM. However, since you see the bit about "Mounted root (ext4 filesystem)", that sounds unlikely. You could try adding something like "init=/sbin/init21:31
arraybolt3" to the kernel command line on the off-chance that it does the trick, or even try "init=/bin/bash" to see if you can get a root shell that way.21:31
ice9screen recording doesn't work in wayland right?21:44
arraybolt3Alloysious: According to Solidrun's website, it looks like OpenSUSE Leap and Fedora are officially supported so far. You might be able to take a peek at what they're doing (kernel command line, relevant config files, logs, etc), and try to make Ubuntu do that. If you want to use Ubuntu.21:57
morganuquestion: I dont want to get help with UBUNTU, I want help in looking for an ubuntu app. Is this the right place to ask for an app to manage my photos. I want TAGS.22:59
mrzombiehello, I have an oddly specific question. I'm trying to determine if there's a file in ubuntu that will say my detailed memory specs23:01
axelsosaltygThumb is pretty useful and it allows you to use tags23:01
sarnoldmrzombie: try: sudo dmidecode -t memory23:03
sarnoldmorganu: maybe shotwell?23:03
mrzombiesarnold, I can't issue commands, I'm examining my ubuntu partition separately23:04
mrzombiemaybe i could chroot?23:04
morganuaxelsosalty, sarnold will check. I have an ooold iphone twas a gift and their photos are (thumb down)23:04
mrzombiebut i feel like that would give me the current memory specs23:04
sarnoldmrzombie: or whatever OS you're running, install their version of dmidecode?23:05
morganuand Bashing-om leftyfb thanks I see your 14:15 comments now.23:06
leftyfbmrzombie: cat /proc/meminfo23:07
mrzombieleftyfb, I opened that directory and it was empty23:07
leftyfbmrzombie: that isn’t a file on your old system, it’s on the running system23:08
leftyfbmrzombie: your hard drive does not store hardware specs23:08
mrzombiemaybe i should explain my issue. I have two ram chips, and i'm trying to figure out what slot i had them in before i briefly removed them. so i imaged this partition, and restored in vmware, so i was hoping there would be a log somewhere where it will tell me the slot configuration23:09
mrzombielefty, i think you shot my idea down if there's no logs of hardware specs23:10
leftyfbmrzombie: correct23:14
arraybolt3mrzombie: I don't think you'll need to do this. If the RAM works and is recognized at its full speed and full capacity in the order you have them in, you should be good to go. If something's awry, mess with what sticks go in what slots until it works.23:16
mrzombiethe full issue is that i have windows 10 on the other partition that is hibernated.23:16
mrzombieso i believe it will crash if i don't have the same configuration, or in best case scenario throw an error and not boot.23:17
leftyfbmrzombie: hibernation is saved to the hard drive, not memory23:17
leftyfbIt has nothing to do with memory23:17
mrzombieleftyfb, right but if i restore from it, it will expect the same exact memory23:18
arraybolt3mrzombie: I find that unlikely, given how hibernation works, but possible. If you're really worried, copy the hibernation file (or better yet, take an image of the entire Windows partition), and place it on an external hard drive, then try to boot. If it fails, you can restore anything that got mangled, switch stuff around, and try again.23:18
leftyfbIt only expects enough memory to run the loaded applications23:18
leftyfbIt doesn’t care about the type of memory or the banks they are in23:19
mrzombieyou mean windows right? because ubuntu is not the one that's hibernated23:19
leftyfbI mean either of them23:20
arraybolt3mrzombie: Hibernation just saves your RAM contents to a file. In theory, memory stick positioning won't matter, as long as the file can be loaded back into RAM correctly.23:20
leftyfbEither way, at this point we are off topic for this channel23:20
arraybolt3I'm open to a direct chat if you need further support.23:21
leftyfbOr try #windows23:21
arraybolt3leftyfb: Wow, didn't think #windows would be a thing, given Libera.Chat's purpose. Cool, and possibly good to know.23:22
mrzombiewait, i just ran a dmesg command and seems like it shows some relevant info23:23
mrzombieisn't that logged every boot?23:23
leftyfbmrzombie: no23:23
leftyfbWell23:23
leftyfb /var/log/kern.log23:23
leftyfbBut that won’t tell you memory bank orders23:24
arraybolt3mrzombie: You might have archived dmesg logs, but I dunno if that will help (unless you can make sense of the BIOS physical memory map, if that provides the data)23:24
leftyfbmrzombie: as you’ve been told. It doesn’t matter anyway23:25
leftyfbJust boot it23:25
mrzombieholy crap my kern.log is 500mb haha, alright, i think i'll give it a shot now that i have the full image23:25
sarnoldzounds23:25
