Sabotenderhuh. I have no idea. I am ust following a walk-through from google. since this adapter does not seem to work out of the box, it  is a RTL8811CU00:01

jhutchinsSabotender: What problems are you actually having with the build?  Is it or can it be set up for dkms?02:19
fowlhow do I disable automatic login for lubuntu 22.04? I only found instructions for ubuntu shell(?) my user config panel doesnt have the option02:24
arraybolt3I think that's probably going to be in SDDM's configuration?02:26
Sabotenderducasse:  I am not sure. I am just trying to get this wireless adapter to work correctly but I can't even manage to compile a driver nor get the ones that apparently already exist to install or work02:26
arraybolt3fowl: Check /etc/sddm.conf.d/autologin.conf.02:27
arraybolt3fowl: Er, /etc/sddm.conf might have the setting, that's where it is on my system.02:28
Sabotenderit's like I can't catch a break.  my next attempt is going to be  typing: apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade and hope the driver is included in a new kernel, if I get one.02:30
Bashing-omSabotender: ^ then ' sudo ubuntu-drivers list ' .02:32
Sabotendermy adapter is a  RTL8811CU02:33
jhutchinsSabotender: It looks like an update might fix it - not sure if you said what Ubuntu version you were running, but the adapter is a few years old so it should be covered by a current install.02:36
Sabotenderhmm looks like this image is using Ubuntu 22.04 version02:38
Sabotenderbut mind you , this is an ARM logic board02:38

jhutchinsSabotender: Ah, not all drivers get built for alternative architectures.02:38
SabotenderI saw that one, but it looks like he is more interested in pushing some sort of personal philosophy instead of giving you the correct information. What do they call it? clickbar?02:41

zetherooSince upgrading from 20.04 to 22.04 I've noticed a serious degradation of performance. With just a couple browser windows open, a dozen tabs, terminal, Files ... it's like my PC is under-powered most of time - even when merely opening a new website. Even openeing google.com takes seconds to finish loading.15:13
RiverFish20What OS are u using15:15

RiverFish20I have a very low powered OS and havent noticed any major preformance difference from 20.04 to 22.0415:16

RiverFish20I have to run Xubuntu or Lubuntu15:18
RiverFish20and they are working fine on my minimum spec laptop15:18
RiverFish20So, maybe its the desktop environment?15:18
RiverFish20Try Lubuntu and see if it works better for you15:19
zetherooOk, well unless otherwise stated ... it's Ubuntu here in this channel ;)15:19
RiverFish20ok15:19
crorafIs it possible to start ubuntu without gpu drivers15:19
zetherooNo thanks. We use Ubuntu as the workplace Linux distro.15:19
RiverFish20I mean, Ubuntu and Lubuntu are just different DEs, otherwise nearly the same15:20
RiverFish20Lubuntu is just lighter15:21
RiverFish20probably results in better preformance15:21
jhutchinsRiverFish20: There's no difference in the OS between the various "flavors", they're just different GUI desktops implemented on top of the same base system.15:22
zetherooMoving to a different DE isn't a solution - Ubuntu (GDE) is slow and I would like to find a solution to getting it to work faster. I'm well aware that there are more lightweight DEs out there.15:23
jhutchinsRiverFish20: That said, the majority of users, and hence the majority of volunteers here, use the standard Gnome desktop.15:23
tuxickand those with more recent hardware use kde15:24

zetherooI really get the sense that Chrome's resource management (CPU/RAM) sucks in Ubuntu 22.04. Maybe it has something to do with the gfx drivers? Whatever it is, it's made work for me border on impossible.15:25
jhutchinszetheroo: xfce and lxde are good compromises between function and light weight.15:25
jhutchinszetheroo: If you think it's your browser, try a different one.  Chrome and Firefox are both pretty heavy.15:26
tuxickzetheroo: worse than firefox on 20?15:26
zetheroo jhutchins: I have a fairly decent PC here. Thinkpad P14s i7 16GB RAM ... it should be just fine with Ubuntu :)15:27
zetherooFor work we use all Google services, and those are best-integrated with Chrome ... which is why Chrome is our officially-supported browser.15:28
zetherooI haven't used FF in years. :/15:28
zetherooI guess I could try Brave15:29
jhutchinszetheroo: You need some objective benchmarks on what parts of the system are running slow.15:30
zetheroojhutchins: I know. I wish I could get some. :(15:31
arraybolt3zetheroo: Are you sure it's not something other than Chrome? I mean I use Chrome exclusively on all my systems and it runs just fine.15:31
jhutchinszetheroo: This is Linux, you have to make your own.15:31
arraybolt3tuxick: lol I'm on KDE over here :P15:31
zetheroo arraybolt3: If I close Chrome, and all associated apps, my system is much more responsive ... instantly15:32
jhutchinszetheroo: Which version of Chrome, from what source?15:32
arraybolt3zetheroo: Can you look at System Monitor and see how much RAM and CPU power is in use? Also is this a spinning disk system or an SSD system?15:32
jhutchinszetheroo: Chrome uses the graphics subsystem fairly heavily.  What chipset do you have, and what drivers are you using?15:33
zetherooVersion 107.0.5304.121 (Official Build) (64-bit)15:33
arraybolt3I have over 35 tabs open here and have yet to break 16 GB on my 32 GB laptop.15:34
zetherooI have Intel and Nvidia, but I am only using the Intel gfx15:34
zetheroo arraybolt3: yeah, it's not the RAM, it's the CPU which seems to be spiking when opening new sites15:35
arraybolt3Hmm. Did you by any chance tweak some setting just before this happened? I mean I sometimes run Chromium (which is just the open-source Chrome) on ancient systems with a 2nd gen Celeron and 4 GB RAM and it works just fine there too.15:35
arraybolt3(This is all with various flavors of Ubuntu 22.04.)15:36
zetherooI'm not using other flavors of Ubuntu though. I'm using the default GDE.15:36
arraybolt3I know but I mean the flavor of Ubuntu hasn't impacted my experience. I've used standard Ubuntu Desktop, as well as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu. Great experience on all four.15:37
arraybolt3Perhaps Wayland is causing trouble somehow?15:37

TeridonI'm trying to install Ubuntu 20.04 with autoinstall but curtin is crashing on my storage config.  Well, it seems to crash *after* it creates the partitions.   here's my storage config:  https://dpaste.org/qbz9T  and here's the failure message: https://dpaste.org/HoY9O15:38
arraybolt3(Because admittedly my Ubuntu Desktop system seemed to have more trouble than all the other systems - I attributed that to it being underpowered for my use case but maybe Wayland had something to do with it.)15:38
jhutchinsarraybolt3: Wayland is years away from any optimization projects.  They're still working on basic functionality.15:39
zetherooarraybolt3: with Chrome closed my PC runs real smooth15:43
arraybolt3Right but you want it to run smooth with Chrome open, right? I'm trying to think of things to change other than closing Chrome.15:43
zetherooI have two Brave windows open and about as many tabs as I had open in Chrome ...15:43
zetherooYes, but the question to me is, what is Chrome doing that Brave isn't ....15:43
zetherooI'm going to sync my Chrome profile to Brave and see ...15:43
jhutchinszetheroo: A wild guess would say that you're running off of the Intel graphics, which are power optimized, rather than the Nvidia subsystem which is performance optimized.  The high CPU usage supports this theory.15:44
arraybolt3That's a good point. zetheroo, see if you can enable hardware accelerated graphics in Chrome. That might do the trick.15:45
zetheroojhutchins: I would agree with that theory. Only question then is, why the drastic performance change with the upgrade to 22.04?15:45
arraybolt3(That should hopefully use the iGPU.)15:45
arraybolt3zetheroo: Perhaps a config setting got lost somewhere when you upgraded?15:45
zetherooarraybolt3: it's already enabled15:45
arraybolt3Tar.15:46
arraybolt3Then really the only other significant thing I can think that changed was Wayland.15:46
arraybolt3When you're first logging into your user account, there's a gear in the lower-right corner you can click that will offer you an option called "Ubuntu on Xorg" or something similar. Use that when you log in and see if Chrome starts working good again.15:46
zetherooarraybolt3: true - will try that on next boot15:47
jhutchinszeroes_: I didn't see you mention a change in performance before, just that you were dissatisfied with it.16:08
jhutchinszeroes_: Change in performance could easily be caused by a change in the default chipset, which could happen with an upgrade.16:09
zetherooOk, I'm back with some observations.16:17
zetheroo1. Logging into Xorg instead of Wayland didn't bring any noticeable improvement. Actually the login took longer.16:17
zetheroo2. Changing the Nvidia PRIME profile from 'Intel (Power Saving Mode)' to 'NVIDIA O-Demand' made a noticeable difference to Chrome/System performance - though now I notice the temps being a bit warmer, as would be expected.16:17
zetheroo3. Changing the Nvidia PRIME profile from 'Intel (Power Saving Mode)' to 'NVIDIA O-Demand' seems to have changed the login settings to 'Ubuntu' and 'Ubuntu on Wayland', wheres before it was 'Ubuntu' and 'Ubuntu on Xorg' - or?16:17
arraybolt3That would make sense - NVIDIA uses X by default I believe.16:23
arraybolt3zetheroo: ^16:23

The L2TP connection establishes (and remains), but I cannot access anything on the VPN, even via IP. Pinging the VPN DNS servers (by IP) also doesn't work "Destination Host Unreachable". It works in Windows 10 so my account should be okay. Any ideas?17:25

tomreyncalamari: do a traceroute against the VPNs DNS servers, see where it goes. If there is an IP address / network conflict between your LAN and the VPN, why would this not also affect windows?17:43

tomreyncroraf: you can retry this with a different proprietary driver series. not every driver series will work well with every graphics card, as you have seen. more info coming up...18:55

granrojotomreyn: thanks! I saw that explanation but i dont understand it18:55
granrojotomreyn: I plugged a usb key before taht now I can't do anything with it, it shows on the dekstop but I cant mount it18:56
tomreyngranrojo: the simple answer: in your case, all of these "loop" devices are there because of snaps you have installed. does this answer your question, sufficiently?18:57
granrojotomreyn: snap packages??18:57
tomreyngranrojo: the usb key will be unrelated to these loop devices18:57
tomreyn!snap | granrojo18:57
ubottugranrojo: Snaps are containerised software packages similar to Flatpaks and AppImages. For more info, see https://snapcraft.io18:57
granrojotomreyn: ubottu: Well I deisable snaps packages with systmctl I dont have any anp pacakges installed18:58
tomreynubuntu supports two types of software packages out of the box now. apt + dpkg for .deb packages, and snap for .snap packages.18:58
tomreyngranrojo: your screenshot states otherwise18:59
granrojotomreyn: mmhhh ok, let me check the current status18:59
tomreynthe    snap list    command lists installed snaps19:00
granrojotomreyn: and why snap creates more devices when I ru the df command?19:03
tomreyngranrojo: snap does not create devices as a result of you running 'df'. they were probably already present before you did.19:07
granrojotomreyn: yes i know the devices are not creted when i run df, but why snap created devices?19:08
tomreynbecause snaps are managed using loop devices.19:09
tomreynif you will read up more on snaps you will get a better understanding on it19:09
tomreynif you have a question about how to get a certain task done or about something not working as expected, please provide more details.19:10
croraf58tomreyn great news nvidia-driver-515 seems to work good19:11
croraf58nvidia-driver-520-open was crashing19:12
croraf58I just need to update to latest kernel now to see if it is still working19:12
tomreyni'm not surprised, nvidia is still elarning about this thing called "open source"19:12
croraf58I now got 520 propriatery in the list,   520-open propriater was crashing, but now i have this one without -open19:12
tomreynglad you found a solution that works for you.19:13
croraf58You think if I now install 520 after 515 I'll be able to switch to 515 in the recovery mode?19:13
tomreynswitching between different nvidia-* drivers will require either locally cached packages or internet access for downloading them.19:14
croraf58ok, I'll take a risk with 520 (no -open)19:15
tomreynyou can always purge again as we did19:15
tomreynwhich should bring you back to nouveau19:15
croraf58yes, thanks a lot. You are a saviour!19:15
tomreynyou're welcome19:16
