fungosI used that new restricted modules manager to install the nvidia driver00:47

shadowhywindnosrednaekim i get that error when i run apt-get update00:47
nosrednaekimshadowhywind: bad mirror?00:48
shadowhywindno clue, in the middle of the update it said that it had to stop or it would do bad things00:48
ardchoilleWhy would nv be in restricted modules? Isn't it installed with the system?00:49
shadowhywindThere are two version of the nvidia drives the ones that comes preinstalled and one that you can download from the repo's/nvidia website.00:49
fungosand I need to uninstall and install again nvidia?00:50
shadowhywindthe one that comes preinstalled doesn't do opengl *to my knowledge*00:50

nosrednaekimardchoille: I think it is..00:50
shadowhywindthere is a difference between nv and nvidia, nv i believe is the preinstalled version00:50

nosrednaekimfungos: what worked with 7.04, and what hangs in 7.1000:52
ardchoilleI bet it's that restricted-manager00:52

TailsfanYeah, but I play WoW, not ET: QW02:07

* genii makes a new pot of coffee for all the caffeine addicts02:19
Kr4t05Okay... I'm having trouble getting a Windows-shared printer to show up in the Printer Wizard.02:21
Kr4t05The printer is shared from a Windows XP system, which should be configured properly, (as I configured it myself).02:21
Kr4t05But, It doesn't show up, (the computer itself doesn't even show up).02:21
Kr4t05I've tried the Guest account, Anonymous, and the root account for the remote system.02:22
BluesKajKr4t05, the guest acct is usually the one that works , however go to the windows pc and check on the printer driver in printer properties and use that name for the printer02:26
Kr4t05BluesKaj: Yeah, I did that.02:26
BluesKajin the linux printer wizard ...setup samba too02:27
Kr4t05BluesKaj: I've never had to "set up" samba before. The defaults usually worked fine.02:27
Kr4t05So, I set up the printer using the information from the Windows machine.02:34
Kr4t05I sent it a job, and in the System Setttings window, it says "Processing"02:34
michael_shalom folks02:34
Kr4t05Oh, now it says "Held"02:34
rudd-ohello gents, quick question: how do I get a device which normally does NOT SHOW up on the media:/ kioslave, to show up there so the user can mount unmount and the dialog box of device insertion appears?02:37
BluesKajKr4t05, samba will open the line to the pc and see it , then cups will see it as well when you run the printer wizard02:37
Kr4t05BluesKaj: Well, obviously.02:38
Kr4t05It's worked before, in Fiesty, Edgy and Dapper.02:38
BluesKajKr4t05, does the pc workgroup show up if you type smb:/ in the konq addressbar ?02:39
Kr4t05Yes.02:39
=== genii_ is now known as genii
Kr4t05MSHOME shows up.02:40
Kr4t05Should I click it?02:40
Kr4t05I click it: Timeout on server MSHOME02:41

Radio01Ok, who's taking me to dinner?02:43
BluesKajand make sure the windows pc is booted up02:43
Kr4t05BluesKaj: Yep.02:43
Kr4t05Yes.02:43
BluesKajbut you don't see a workgroup?02:44
BluesKajwith the linux pc02:44
Kr4t05I see a workgroup, but if I click it, it errors out.02:44
Kr4t05And says something about timing out.02:44
BluesKajmy setup shows a workgroup and mshome in konq02:45
Kr4t05my setup show mshome, and nothing else.02:45
Kr4t05"MSHOME" is the workgroup.02:45
LimCorehow to set which user can use su or sudo with OWN password to become root02:45
BluesKajtiming out , that's cuz it's looking but can't find the windows pc02:46
Kr4t05LimCore: Add the user to the sudo/sudoers group. (Not sure which.)02:46
Kr4t05BluesKaj: Yeah.02:46
Kr4t05Which doesn't make sense.02:46
Kr4t05Because the Windows PC is on a configured to share the printer.02:47

dmcgloneI never had luck with lexmark printers02:50
BluesKajhmm lexmarks are notoriously undersupported on linux02:50
Kr4t05Well, there are drivers, they were RPMs, which had to be converted to debs in the goofiest way possible.02:51
Kr4t05But, it worked in Fiesty.02:51
adamonline45Does anyone here have Avant working under KDE?  I just want to know if it's possible/not too painstaking...02:51
Kr4t05Perhaps this is just another one of those notorious "upgrade hazards?"02:51

Kr4t05BluesKaj: No, It's a longer process.02:52
Kr4t05Oh, wait. No...02:52
Kr4t05It's a tar.gz that has RPMs inside, that are converted with alien.02:52

jmichaelxbazhang: i compiled and the legacy rt2500 driver (from serialmonkey) last night, and it is way better than the driver that ships with *buntu, but so far it still royally sucks03:31
bazhangjmichaelx: this is way offtopic, but have you tried a live cd of another distro to see if the problem with the bcm card persists?03:31
bazhangjmichaelx: I have had nothing but awful experiences with ralink cards (plural)03:32
* genii sips his grapefruit juice and waits for the post03:33
jmichaelxbazhang: as far as i know, the speed issue with bcm43xx-based cards is universal in linux when using th eOS driver... the only way around it is to use ndiswrapper... which is actually the route i should be taking with the rt2500 , too03:33
crackhead_25genii: blk... -- http://pastebin.ca/80701003:33

bazhangjmichaelx: well, that is a last resort ndiswarper that is, but if it works...03:34
geniiOr is it possible it has no uuid?03:34

jmichaelxbazhang: are you able to get on public access points using ndiswrapper?03:37

geniicrackhead_25: Not really. I suppose I could google them for a full explanation. They are the defaults already in there for your other drives at the moment.03:41
geniicrackhead_25: The others read/write etc, yes?03:41
jmichaelxmaduser: i love gutsy except for two things.... the buntu devs seem to be (who am i to say) kind of wreckless when it comes to wireless (like packaging the VERY unstable beta rt2500 driver in gutsy, instead of the stable legacy driver) , and i still have an issue with USB drives not mounting upon booting up.. i have to unplug them, then plug them back in for them to mount03:41
* genii sips a coffee and ponders why no UUIDs on those ntfs drives03:42

geniicrackhead_25: Do you have Vista on that external?03:43

jmichaelxmaduser: apparently03:59

crackhead_25yeah, probably04:00
geniicrackhead_25: If the drive can use both firewire and usb go srounge up a usb cord and use that then04:01
genii*scrounge04:01
crackhead_25genii:  oh, no the firewire drive itself doesnt have a dual usb firewire..04:02
crackhead_25the port on the laptop is a dual usb/firewire socket..04:03
crackhead_25gateway convertible laptop04:03
geniicrackhead_25: Ah Ok. Well, I guess it will need to wait then for the time being.04:03
BluesKajI'm not much help here , so i'll hit the sack.. nite gents04:03
crackhead_25its says there is some fix program for linux that could work? or will that reformat it? i can't reformat it. have to keep the data on it.04:03
geniicrackhead_25: But after you chkdsk it in Windows, should mount in linux anyhow04:03
geniicrackhead_25: I would NOT suggest messing with unclean ntfs from linux04:04
crackhead_25ok04:04
crackhead_25is there a similar "remove device safely" function in linux? could my having merely plugged and unplugged it from the linux a few times have caused the same uncleanliness?04:05
geniicrackhead_25: Please do command: locate ntfsfix        and tell me if it finds it04:07
crackhead_25didnt seem to find it04:07
crackhead_25should i install it?04:08
geniicrackhead_25: OK. For external drives or drives which get removed sometimes a good option to make sure they sync before removing them04:08
crackhead_25what is it?04:08
crackhead_25how do i do that?04:08
geniicrackhead_25: ntfsfix is a part of linux-ntfs toolkit, just reading about it now04:08
geniicrackhead_25: to sync drives, just the command: sync  by itself. Then you can umount /media/sdb1 with no half-copied files in buffer but not on drive, etc04:10
refreshratedamn kubuntu monitor settings is crazy and interfers with nvidia drivers-it says 53hz when its actually  60, i changed it to 50 hz and my refresh rate became 75hz as i wanted04:11
crackhead_25genii: do you mean you have to do a commandline everytime you want to plug /unplug? isnt there a better way/a little applet to run in the toolbar or something?04:12
geniicrackhead_25: You can also alternately add option of nosync to the /etc/fstab line for sdb104:12
crackhead_25ill have to look.. maybe..04:12
crackhead_25no sync? what would that do? maybe ill do that..04:12
geniicrackhead_25:  nosync means not to store/buffer data bound for drives which can be disconnected like usb/nfs etc04:13
crackhead_25do i add that after gid=46?04:13
geniicrackhead_25: It writes anything immediately to drive so always marked clean if you umount it04:14
geniicrackhead_25: add it just after defaults04:14
crackhead_25k, i did04:15
geniisince defaults includes sync the nosync overrides it if placed after04:15
geniicrackhead_25: Since you can't chkdsk it yet, there's not much more to be done for it tonight04:18
* genii puts the coffeemug away and starts drinking milk out of the container04:20
crackhead_25genii: ok, thanks.. ill be back to it soon.. see if i can get a little converter plug for the 1394 socket tomorrow maybe..04:21
geniicrackhead_25: here time is nearing midnight. I'm normqally online daytimes here from about 9am til 4:45pm-ish Toronto EST04:22
crackhead_25EST as well04:22
geniiWell 11:22 actually pm04:22
geniicrackhead_25: You can catch me almost any weekday then in those times, sometimes later from home like now as well04:23

adamonline45I'm trying to change my default sound-mixer slider to change the 'PCM' volume instead of the 'master' volume.  Does anyone know how to do this in KDE?04:51
adamonline45oops, here's a how-to for gnome, but it uses gconftool-2, and I don't seem to have the target directories it specifies: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook#head-d374bb9e1b7183c133759a8c6877a34c50c4ba7d04:52
Neoxeekhrobeadam: use kmixer04:53
Jucatoadamonline45: right-click on the kmix (speaker) icon in your system tray and click on Select Master Channel...04:56
adamonline45Neoxeekhrobe: Alright, I'll check it out.  Do you mean KMix, or is that a separate application? oh okay04:56
Neoxeekhrobeyah kmix04:57
adamonline45Jucato: I did that.  I think I see what the problem is, it works if I change the volume from there now, thank you, but using my IR remote it still changes the Master volume instead of PCM.  Do either of you know where I might find some conf file or something that'll let me change that?04:58
Dr_willisthe remote stuff has its own config files. :)04:58
Jucatoadamonline45: did you select PCM to be the Master Channel?04:59
adamonline45Dr_willis: Do you happen to know where I'd find that or what it's called? Even a guess?04:59

Jucatoyep, Media Control can control Amarok07:41
adamonline45nice! Just yionked that info 8)07:43

adamonline45My reall question, though, is if anyone has any information on installing the Domino style engine?07:47

adamonline45Well, I'm installing it from source... is there a package? Anyway, I'm getting an error at the ./configure stage saying it can't find my X config...07:55
adamonline45Jucato: the error: checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X libraries. Please check your installation and add the correct paths!07:56

ubotuadamonline45: When a program or configure script asks for "X includes", you should probably install the following packages: xlibs-dev   xlibs-static-dev   xorg-dev07:56
JucatoLynoure: afaik, no... (or at least maybe not yet)07:56
Jucatoadamonline45: and there's a package for Kubuntu floating around somewhere in http://kde-look.org07:57
sigmais it true that feisty packages will not install in gutsy?07:57
Lynouresigma: some do.07:57
Lynouresigma: but it's recommended against.07:57
LynoureThat is: feel free to try, but don't expect people to be eager to help if it breaks something07:58
adamonline45Jucato: It says there's no package xlibs-dev... Or, that it's been obsoleted. :/07:58
sigmai see, is it dangerous to install them? i know the graphics drivers don't work but thats understandable as they are rather crucial to the system07:59
Jucatoadamonline45: try xorg-dev. but I really do suggest you try to look for the .deb package first07:59
Lynouresigma: What packege are you eyeing, specifically?08:00
Jucatosigma: more "unrecommended" than dangerous. Some packages *might* cause severe problems, some might not. The question is, are you willing to risk it? :D08:00
Lynouresigma: and are you talking about official feisty packages or stuff packaged by a 3rd party?08:00
sigmai have a whole lot from feisty - my i-net connection is rather slow and expensive so i dont want to re-download them - its mainly the audio and video codecs08:01

BluesKajyeah, tried twice to get those kde4 instructions to work , but no dice .. obviously doing something wrong , but I can't be bothered to find out : )15:42
nosrednaekimBluesKaj: heh...15:42
nosrednaekimBluesKaj: its really not worth the work15:43
BluesKajyeah. 3.5.8 works fine15:43
BluesKajlike you said , when it's deb'd then I'll do it15:44
lorddarkpathello15:46
BluesKaj!hello | lorddarkpat15:46
nosrednaekimhello lorddarkpat15:46
ubotulorddarkpat: Hi! Welcome to #kubuntu!15:46
alesanre15:47
alesanI have no idea how to configure a pppoe connection with kppp15:47
nosrednaekim!pppoe15:48
ubotuSetting up an ADSL/PPPoE connection? Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE15:48
JucatoI don't thnk kppp handles pppoe adsl15:48
alesanit seems it's dial up only15:48
Jucatoyep15:48
nosrednaekimoh.. sorry :(15:48
alesanJucato: ah ok :)15:48
alesanno problem15:48
Jucatonosrednaekim: no, that's the right link15:48
nosrednaekimthatlink should help though.15:48
Jucatokppp's the wrong app15:48
nosrednaekimJucato: yeah, but I told him earilier that KPP coulddo it15:48
Jucatoah15:49
sigmawhy does the search feature in konqueror not work?15:49
Jucatoaaaah15:49
Jucatowhat search feature?15:49
alesanok so it is command line only15:49
alesangood15:49
Jucatoalesan: yep15:49
Jucatopppoeconf15:49
Jucatoer...sudo pppoeconf15:49
alesanI have to tell my girlfriend in europe how to setup the connection15:50
BluesKajsigma, do you mean strigi or locate ?15:50
alesanshe's now gone to buy a ethernet cable15:50
Jucatooh..15:50
sigmapress ctrl+f in a konqueror window, that feature - whatever i type in it never finds anything15:50
alesanabout me... you know, I feel like knetworkmanager sucks regarding wireless connections15:50
alesannow I cannot connect with any WPA network, only "free" ones15:51
dazHigh everyone. I'm seriously struggling to find a way to increase the amount of RAM Java allocates to my browser.15:51
nosrednaekimyeah, knetworkmangler has problems15:51
alesanany idea how to reset knetworkmanager or some other component?15:51
dazCan anyone help?15:51
Jucatosigma: while browsing web pages? yes sometimes it doesn't work. I don't know why. I think perhaps it has to do something with the web page itself15:51
nosrednaekimalesan: the cuases vary wildly.15:51
alesanany better wifi manager I can install? now I am connected with a ethernet cable15:51
nosrednaekimalesan: for wpa? yeah, there are a couple15:52
* Jucato is lucky to be using only WEP at home... no problems there15:52
dennhi everyone15:53
* nosrednaekim lives so far out in the middle of nowhere that he leaves it open15:53
nosrednaekimhi denn:15:53
nosrednaekimalesan: the names are escaping me ATM15:53
sigmaJucato: no while searching my hdd, im at a folder with files which start with the word alien, but if i open the find bar and type in alien then click find nothing happens - it don't find anything even though there are files with that word in the name there15:53
Jucatosigma: aaah that15:53
Jucatoit uses regular expressions (I know, annoying...)15:54
Jucatotry alien*15:54
sigmaoh my gosh, lol. they go all the way to make a gui to search and it still needs regular expressions to work:)15:55
Jucatofind is a pretty GUI frontend to "find" and "grep"15:56
=== thiago is now known as chandeller
sigmathanks, its working well now, it should tell people that in the find bar or add the star in at the end automatically15:57
nosrednaekimsigma: but what if people want an exact match?15:57
Jucato(reg exp are actually very powerful... once you know even just the basics....)15:57
Jucatonosrednaekim: the actual problem is that kfind doesn't really tell the user in an obvious manner that it requires regexp15:58
sigmanosrednaekim: good point!15:58
nosrednaekimhmmm yeah,it really should.15:58
sigmaya thats it Jucato15:58
Jucatoor it should "scale" to both...accepting reg exp and non-reg exp...15:58
Jucatodunno if that's even possible though :)15:59
* Jucato goes back to studying15:59
sigmathere should be a one line hint above the search bar giving an example of how to enter the variable15:59
sigmamaybe its fixed in kde415:59
Jucato(or gone... dunno :P)15:59
Riddellanyone with xinerama?  testers needed for qt 415:59
barThe petition!!!!! http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/mainactor/index.html16:00
Jucatosigma: oh Dolphin works on filters, but only for the current directory (same as filters in Konqueror)16:00
sigmalol, i test drove konqueror on a kde4 live cd, its great, looks so much better. i still don't like dolphin, seems to be lacking functionality. i still say kde should use konq for file browsing and firefox for web browsing16:01
Jucatosigma: that last part is impossible :)16:02
sigmaJucato: why you say that - how come its possible for gnome to do it but not kde?16:03
JucatoGNOME's default web browser isn't Firefox16:03
nosrednaekimJucato: what are you studying?16:03
JucatoC++16:03
SSJ_GZsigma: Use of a non-KDE component is up to the distros; it's out of KDE's hands.16:03
JucatoSSJ_GZ: although what he's saying is that KDE itself should use Firefox as KDE's browser16:04
nosrednaekimJucato: i'm trying to learn SIP so I can make a python linking to the qt pictureflow widget16:04
Jucatosigma: one good reason is that a KDE browser would need to use KDE :)16:04
sigmaJucato: good point! but why is firefox the norm in ubuntu and not kubuntu?16:05
xRaich[o]2xsigma: firefox is gtk based and loads a shitload of libs. and that comsumes memory16:06
nosrednaekimsigma: because firefox is written in gtk, which is what gnome uses16:06
Jucatosigma: that's for distros to decide. nothing to do with GNOME or KDE actually16:06
SSJ_GZnosrednaekim: It's a bit of a stretch to say Firefox is "written in GTK" but yes, it currently uses GTK as its toolkit on Linux.16:07
nosrednaekimyeah..16:08
sigmawell i use firefox, the only extra lib i had to install was libstdcc++5 to install it, can't say its consuming that much more memory16:08
sigmais there any way just to remove the web browsing part of konqueror?16:09
nosrednaekimsigma: you probably had already installed other gtk apps.16:09
Jucatojust don't use it16:09
Jucatothe web browsing part of Konqueror (KHTML) is used in other KDE apps to. it's a core library16:09
sigmanope firefox was the first one16:10
sigmaoh ok i see, better not fiddle with that one!16:10
sigmaall the other dep's except that one lib were pre-installed on my system16:11
sigmadoes anyone know if theres a .deb package for the vdrift racing game?16:11
nosrednaekim!info vdrift16:12
mot_what package enables slideshow in konqueror?16:12
ubotuPackage vdrift does not exist in gutsy16:12
InsurgentHEy.16:12
nosrednaekimhey Insurgent16:12
InsurgentCan someone help me out?16:12
sigmai checked packages.ubuntu.com - it wasn't there16:12
InsurgentI'm trying to update and it isn't working16:12
nosrednaekimInsurgent: whats the problem16:12
sigmawhats the problem?16:12
nosrednaekimsigma: try www.getdeb.net16:12
sigmawill do, thanks16:13
Jucatomot_: what slideshow do you mean?16:13
Insurgentnosrednaekim, during update i get a 404 on "http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-latest/dists/edgy/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz"16:13
sigmai hate building from source16:13
mot_Jucato, slideshow view16:13
* Jucato loves compiling...16:13
InsurgentIt's in trying to compile to kubuntu 7.416:13
InsurgentIt's in trying to compile to kubuntu 7.0416:13
* Jucato has never seen a slideshow view16:13
nosrednaekimInsurgent: compile?16:13
InsurgentErr16:14
Insurgentupgrade*16:14
InsurgentI'm not at all with it today.16:14
llutzmot_: kipi-plugins16:14
nosrednaekimInsurgent: you're trying to upgrade to 7.04? then remove that line.16:14
Jucatollutz: in Konqueror?16:14
InsurgentRemove what line?16:14
llutzJucato: iirc uses konqi some kio-slave to use those plugins too16:14
nosrednaekimfrom your /etc/apt/sources.list.... the line that has the kubuntu URL in ir.16:14
nosrednaekim*it16:14
Insurgentnosrednaekim, okay.16:15
InsurgentThanks16:15
Jucatollutz: I don't think Konqueror uses any kipi stuff at all16:15
sigmahey i didnt know that getdeb.net was owned by canonical16:15
mot_llutz, nogo, i already have that installed and it's not doing the trick.16:15
Jucatoperhaps Gwenview, Digikam or Krita16:15
sigmawhy is it then not in packages.ubuntu.com?16:15
InsurgentArg.16:15
nosrednaekimsigma: unsuppoerted games mostly.
