OerHeksjust walked drabber08:18
OerHekshe wants to go out all day :-D08:19
OerHeksspring-fever08:19
ducasseluna was actually outside for more than 30 seconds at a time yesterday, so it's obvious that winter is fading :)08:20
OerHekssome dude is forced to catch 280 goldfish from the canal, EriC^^ .. he thought it was a nice idea, free goldfish ( dutch news http://nos.nl/artikel/2162917-veenendaler-moet-280-uitgezette-goudvissen-weer-uit-gracht-halen.html08:30
EriC^^i read something pretty disturbing today while reading about dolphins08:32
EriC^^i'm still shivering08:32
daftykinsoh?08:32
EriC^^i was watching this, about dolphins intelligence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnVAv77gEqo08:33
EriC^^"Is this dolphin speaking?" then later from the comments i found out another page08:33
EriC^^"I had a sexual relationship with a dolphin" http://nypost.com/2014/06/10/the-dolphin-that-fell-in-love-with-a-human/08:34
EriC^^the dolphin committed suicide after the "experiment" was over and she left08:34
EriC^^OerHeks: wow08:34
OerHeksisn't there a soutpark episode, about mr march, getting surgery to become a dolphin :-D08:34
OerHekshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwg2f4oKOQs08:36
EriC^^lol08:36
daftykinspoor Peter the dolphin :(08:41
EriC^^yeah :(08:45
EriC^^"Peter you can do better than that!" lol08:45
EriC^^reminds me of the teachers from The Wall08:45
Wirehunterdaftykins, I gave your tip about the HWE kernel to two other men. One had thunderbolt issues on his dell xps using a dock and the other had 14.04 LTS but needed a newer kernel and asked for help in #ubuntu. :P08:49
daftykins^_^08:50
daftykinssounds good08:50
daftykinsglad to hear it solved your issues08:50
ducasseEriC^^: is this guy trolling? look at the logs from when he has been here earlier.08:56
EriC^^he is kind of on "another level"08:57
ducassei tried to get him to answer questions yesterday, it was just no go.08:57
EriC^^i dont have any logs though :/08:57
daftykinsthere are the public ones08:58
ducasse!logs08:58
ubot5Official channel logs can be found at https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/ . LoCo channels are now logged there too. Meetingology logs at https://ubottu.com/meetingology/logs/08:58
ducasseeveryone who has tried to help him had to throw in the towel.08:59
EriC^^he's either an idiot or a genius08:59
WirehunterAbout the guy in #ubuntu just now?09:03
daftykinssounds like it09:05
ducassedaftykins: EriC^^ spent several minutes explaining how to use a pastebin, so he could provide info from parted. he finally posted this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/2416977109:07
daftykins:D09:08
ducassethis has been going on for days now...09:08
daftykinswere any of you present the day a guy did a pastebin of his pastebinit'd URL?09:08
ducassethe sad thing is that i fully believe that happened :(09:09
WirehunterWell, the termbin.com thing is definitely more fool-proof. :P09:10
EriC^^now the difficult part is getting him to remove the last 2 partitions09:11
OerHeksit all started @ 3-11 https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2017/03/11/%23ubuntu.html ..09:11
EriC^^gparted to the rescue :>09:12
daftykinsi think Unbutn is the best typo i've seen to date09:13
daftykins"unbutton"09:13
WirehunterI don't believe this guy is native english :') "I got Ubuntu worked"09:14
ducassehe claims english is his first language, i'm not sure either.09:14
WirehunterOr maybe he's just a kid that doesn't know what he's doing09:19
WirehunterThere's a Dutch computer-support forum that used to have an IRC-like chat, these kind of things happened all the time over there :P09:21
ducassethey do here as well, but usually not this extreme.09:22
ducasseoften when they are, they're just trolls.09:22
WirehunterOh well, my train just arrived, got to pack.09:26

EriC^^daftykins: how do you get to the disk management in windows 10?10:07
EriC^^super + r then diskmgmt.msc ?10:07
BluesKajHi folks10:09
daftykinsEriC^^: even easier, super + X or right click start, then disk management is on the menu that appears - but your way works too10:15
daftykinsBluesKaj: morning \o10:15
EriC^^thanks daftykins10:15
BluesKaj:'Morning daftykins10:16
BluesKajHi EriC^^10:16
EriC^^hi BluesKaj10:16
daftykinswell guys, my plan is complete - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v1bo3geizvh1xj5/AAD5V02yvK54H-JwLAUpjyg3a?dl=010:27
daftykinsbit disappointed the phone didn't come with a stand, but i fixed that ;)10:27
ducassesweet :)10:30
BluesKajdaftykins, skype in a phone ? :-)10:33
BluesKajwith voip10:33
daftykinsi've got a small voice gateway box connecting my real PSTN landline phone to the IP network, then a VM runs FreePBX - a Linux distro built on top of CentOS (i think), then i have an analog phone plugged in and now this Cisco handset10:34
daftykinsso yep i can call between handsets in my house, like an office - also got free local voicemail which will email me audio clips of the messages when left10:34
BluesKajneat10:35
daftykinsright now i can dial 9 then the number to dial out over my landline...10:35
daftykinsand yep if i signed up with a VoIP provider i could do calls out over the internet too by say, dialling another digit first instead10:35
ducassemuch hassle to set up?10:36
daftykinssmall learning curve, but tonnes of info online10:36
ducasseso, much like anything else :)10:37
daftykinsyeah10:37
daftykinsobtaining the phone (had to be sure you got an unlocked one) and the voice gateway were the main tough bits i have to say10:37
BluesKaji have a call manager app for my voip phone , but it only registers receieved calls, the phone itself saves the messages just like any other phone message service.10:37
BluesKajsaves missed call numbers that didn't go to message10:39
WirehunterThat guy does have a lot of time :')10:40
ducassedaftykins: i'm really tempted to try setting this up, but can't think of a single reason why i would need it :-/ maybe when voip gets more widely used.10:40
ducasseWirehunter: i'm starting to feel very sorry for EriC^^, but he has the patience of a saint ;)10:41
EriC^^we're almost there (i hope)10:41
ducasseEriC^^: unless he expects handholding through installation...10:42
BluesKajsavng about 65bucks /mos by going with voip service10:43
daftykinshehe yeah, in fairness until such time as i gave out my landline number for work purposes mine wouldn't get much use either ;D *BUT* it was good practice as i could almost offer to set this up for client offices now10:44
BluesKajmost of my friends here use voip now due to the Bell Canada monopoly gouging that's still in effect on regular landline phones and long distance ripoff rates10:49
BluesKaja lot of Bell consumers are afraid to switch, especially seniors who continue to be fleeced, but fear the consequences of changing their phione services10:52
daftykinshrmm10:54
ducassei have the impression most people here just use mobiles for everything, but i think voip is popular with businesses.10:55
BluesKajall kinds of rumours about voip being unreliable and losing your phome number etc, being spread by the "phone company"10:55
WirehunterBluesKaj, Voip using sip trunk? Or using cloud based pbx+10:55
BluesKajsip10:55
BluesKajbell lines10:55
BluesKajdry loop10:55
daftykinsi'm a bit new to it but i think even a cloud PBX uses a SIP trunk to call out :D10:57
ducassedaftykins: tell me this guy is not trolling - http://termbin.com/cooj10:59
daftykinsdefinitely, too suspect being called eric too11:01
Wirehunterdaftykins, I think so, but you don't connect to the sip trunk using your own pbx if you have cloud pbx, right?11:01
daftykinsthere's only one EriC^^!11:01
daftykinsWirehunter: i think it'd be preconfigured by your provider11:01
daftykinsi had to configure my voice gateway device as a 'trunk' and then set up incoming + outgoing routes for dialling in and out with my landline :D11:02
daftykinsi have incoming ring a 'ring group' of 3 extensions :D11:02
daftykinsooh i just set the date and time on the phone! how exciting ;D11:02
BluesKaji was informed that both received outbound calls were all sip trunk/ landline afaik11:02
EriC^^if that guys trolling.. my god11:03
ducasseEriC^^: but yesterday he managed to resize windows on his own _and_ install ubuntu (although in the wrong mode), and now he doesn't know which button to click to drag? i don't buy it.11:04
WirehunterMaybe he should just try using ubuntu in a vm first11:04
BluesKajodd that he doesn't seem to how to rezise a partition11:04
daftykinsEriC^^: i'd definitely hang up my mouse on that caller :)11:05
EriC^^i'm so and so right now11:05
BluesKajseems a vm would be more difficult for him thsm srtting partitions , hand holding wouid be even more intense11:05
EriC^^ugh i'm about to explode11:06
BluesKajthan setting partitions11:06
EriC^^lol i can't describe11:06
EriC^^not sure if he's trolling or not11:08
BluesKajafraid to make a mistake11:08
EriC^^i dont think i can go on right now11:08
EriC^^i'm kind of thinking about what's next and damn..11:09
OerHeksEriC^^, leave it ..  he does not respond as a helpseeker would do11:09
WirehunterIs Wubi still around?11:09
ducasseEriC^^: be *very* clear that he managed to install ubuntu himself before, so he can do it now as well.11:10
OerHekswubi is still around, but not supported with win10 ...11:10
EriC^^reminds me of that movie where the guy had "inferior genes" and he swam with his brother and he asked him how did you do that and he said he just didnt keep enough strength for the way back, i feel like what's to come i won't be able to endure :D11:10
ducasseWirehunter: OerHeks not 8 either, i think?11:10
EriC^^anybody know the name of that movie btw? it was kind of nice11:10
daftykinsnah you can't ever mention wubi, slippery slope!11:10
EriC^^i think ema thurton starred in it too11:10
OerHeksi don't see my monitors anymore .. just got a fresh one, 27" ... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6885560/philips273El.JPG11:11

daftykinscor an upgrade! whos palms did you grease to get that one, OerHeks ?11:11
OerHeksthank you neighbour ..11:11
Wirehunterhaha, I kind of liked wubi. I think Ubuntu is the first Linux distro I tried and I used wubi for that. Years ago, 2009 maybe.11:11
daftykinsoh good god no, it caused more problems than it avoided11:12
daftykinsimagine someone coming on support chat with bricked boot, getting them to boot a live session, mount the NTFS volume then mount the image file before you can even diagnose? oy!11:12
Wirehunterhappened to me :p11:13
daftykinsXD11:14
* daftykins fires wubi out of a cannon11:14
BluesKajWubi is almoist dead. it should be put out of it's misery11:21
daftykinsi was convinced it had been called unsupported since 2012 releases11:23
OerHeksWubi, Flash, Silverlight, space in filenames ..11:23
daftykins:D11:24
OerHeksand wine, ofcourse!11:25
lordievaderWindows...11:26
lordievader:P11:26
ducassei feel guilty for sometimes using capitals first in folder names :)11:26
OerHekswobbly windows are nice11:26
lordievaderIndeed11:26
* lordievader still has them enabled11:26
* daftykins grumbles at lordievader 11:26
BluesKajshow off to your windows friends11:26
lordievaderMeh, I gave that up long ago.11:27
BluesKajthat's about all wobbly is good for , same with the desktop cube on kde11:28
daftykinsi remember playing with wobbly from compiz many many moons ago, but the aliasing (jagged lines of the edges) are soooo offputting :)11:31
lordievaderHavent seen aliasing in the Plasma/Kwin approach ;)11:46
lordievaderdaftykins: Time to install Plasma?11:46
lordievader;)11:47
daftykinsi don't run desktop Linux because i don't believe in it11:47
daftykins:)11:47

ducassedaftykins: 2017 will definitely be the year of haiku (beos) on the desktop, i just know it!11:49
daftykins\o/11:50
lordievaderdaftykins: Understandable.11:52
ducasseEriC^^: he's either very slow or being intentionally difficult, you've been helping him for four hours and he's yet to boot the installer :)12:20
EriC^^ducasse: yeah there is definitely something going on12:21
daftykinsdamn man, leave him to it - that's not healthy12:21
EriC^^i keep thinking maybe he is actually very slow12:21
EriC^^basically we're at the very final step right now, booting into legacy mode12:22
WirehunterWhy legacy mode though? What was the problem with uefi?12:23
EriC^^his windows install is in legacy mode and so is the disk setup that way12:24
EriC^^for some reason his pc keeps booting the usb in uefi mode even though its set to legacy in the bios12:24
daftykinspauljw: good morn \o12:24
daftykinsWirehunter: can't mix the two :>12:25
EriC^^he has to force it to boot in legacy mode somehow12:25
pauljwhi daftykins :)12:25
pauljwEriC^^,12:25
ducasseEriC^^: remove esp from usb stick?12:25
Wirehunterah, mbr disk12:25
ducasseEriC^^: also, how did he write it?12:25
EriC^^hey pauljw :)12:26
pauljw:)12:26
daftykinsis this the part where it boots at last then you get told it's an EOL release? ;D12:26
* daftykins plays the sad trombone12:26
EriC^^ducasse: no idea12:26
EriC^^lol daftykins12:27
EriC^^google said acer gets a boot menu with Esc or f12 maybe12:28
daftykinshmm, could be any of F8 through F12 i think, can't remember many acers off hand12:29
daftykinssometimes the devices might be listed inside the BIOS on the exit page too, oddly enough12:29
pauljwthey're a pain12:29
EriC^^i wonder if there's a way to force it to boot in legacy mode12:35
daftykinsmmm i think all routes would require manual intervention at that point12:36
EriC^^if did sudo modprobe -r efivars what would happen i wonde12:36
ducasseEriC^^: either that, or delete the esp on the usb i'm thinking12:37
EriC^^anyways i think he's just screwing with us12:37
daftykins*nod*12:37
daftykinssmells like a timewaster12:37
EriC^^yup12:39
ducassedaftykins: you think? - http://termbin.com/ek7k12:42
daftykinsi'd have long ago called him a troll/idiot and been banned ;)12:43
EriC^^now he's youtube's problem12:47
EriC^^*laughs maniacally*12:47
daftykins* EriC^^ quickly posts lots of circular youtube vids12:48
EriC^^youtube saved the day!12:49
EriC^^makes you think maybe there should be a kind of video/voice technical support kind of thing12:49
ducassenow just /ignore him :)12:49
EriC^^if everybody who came was like that it would make sense i guess, i still can't tell for sure if he's trolling or not12:50
EriC^^it will stay a mystery i guess :D12:51
EriC^^he does go through a lot of trouble to upload the pics, even though they are almost always irrelevant12:51
EriC^^.. i feel like shooting myself in the face at this point12:53
BluesKajwell, he thinks he's found a helping hand holder and he's afraid to let go12:53
WirehunterI think that it's a kid installing ubuntu for the first time. Just as stupid as I was when I first did, I probably was 12y/o when I first heard about Ubuntu and tried it. However, I knew how to reinstall Windows, so I didn't need the help he does.12:53
ducasseEriC^^: isn't the f12 thing the uefi boot manager? looked like it in the video.12:54
EriC^^hmm i thought it would give a boot options12:55
EriC^^didn't really continue the video, yeah it does look like the uefi menu12:56
EriC^^in his case it gave some boot options menu but nothing with usb uefi and just usb :/12:56
EriC^^oh boy this one keeps getting longer12:57
WirehunterMaybe he didn't set legacy/bios mode?12:57
daftykinshow do you mean set? really the plan should just be to reach a one-time boot menu with both boot type entries listed12:58
EriC^^he did12:58
BluesKajI got lucky when i discovered linux, a freind rescued a pc from a dumpster at work that the security guys figured they didn't need anymore and it ended up on my desk here at home. It became my linux test machine and i was away to the linux races so to speak :-), So there was no need to worry about mucking about on our windows pc12:58
ducasseworst thing is he did, i still think the mbr was not written correctly to the usb, so it will only boot in uefi mode.12:58
EriC^^daftykins: yeah that's what i'm trying to do, i thought f12 would do the job12:58
daftykinsdrat12:59
daftykinsyeah too tough to think of without knowing the exact model machine12:59
EriC^^he said it's Acer E1-532-265713:00
BluesKajsome users are better off not installing linux on uefi machines since it's such a chore if they need windows as well.13:06
pauljwmost users are better off not attempting to install any form of OS.  it's not a trivial matter, even though it seems simple to some of us.13:08
pauljwuefi really does complicate matters13:08
BluesKajhi pauljw , yeah uefi is a pita,  and having a pc to experiment on is a definite advantage13:10
WirehunterOn some systems, uefi is actualy really nice to use. On my Asus uefi, I can select what bootloader to use. I think it scans the drives for efi files.13:11
BluesKajheh, I just wiped the hdd and went with a dos table, i had no intention of keeping W8.1 on the new laptop back in 201313:13
pauljwhey BluesKaj :)13:14
EriC^^i think the support channel helps a lot, when i first tried to install red hat when i was 14-15 i couldn't get it to boot no matter what, i kept getting the dreadful choose Monitor type in the installer and after that button it would always give me a garbled screen13:14
BluesKaja Lenovo G500 , suppose it was bit hasty on my part , but at the time i thought uefi was another attempt by MS to block Linux OSs13:15
EriC^^i ended up using it later when i was like 16 after i had gotten a different monitor and it "just worked" for me, unfortunately it looked very difficult to use and i didnt know much but to search for some commands here and there13:15
WirehunterI think I can't even use mbr/bios on my nvme drive :P13:16
EriC^^so i couldn't really use it for much at all, the channel and all the stuff out there from guides helps a lot13:16
WirehunterBluesKaj, No, maybe you're confused with secure boot13:16
WirehunterBut even Ubuntu has keys for that, right?13:17
ducassei learned using linux with a set of slackware floppies and a unix book from the mid-80's. not recommended as a user-friendly approach :(13:17
WirehunterOnly issue on secure-boot is that you can't install custom kernel modules as nvidia proprietary drivers.13:17
EriC^^that's pretty cool though13:17
ducasseWirehunter: you can if you sign them.13:17
Wirehunterducasse, Ah right13:18
WirehunterBut That's not as easy as apt install nvidia-37013:18
ducassehhonestly, i quite like uefi. had very few issues with it, and most of the ones i had was because of me doing something wrong.13:18
BluesKajWirehunter, no I heard stories about uefi beins a plot etc, guess I should have researched it , but it doesn't matter, kubuntu and debian run fine on it in legacy mode13:19
ducasseBluesKaj: i do have a sneaking suspicion microsoft is up to no good with secure boot, though, until a secondary ca is set up that is also adopted by manufacturers. right now they literally hold all the keys.13:24
ducassethey've already locked arm down.13:25
daftykinsARM?13:25
BluesKajit's too bad I didn't find out about EriC^^ 's experise with UEFI before I wiped the laptop13:25
ducassedaftykins: if you want to make phones or tablets that run ms' stuff, you need to lock down secure boot on those devices. users are not allowed to turn it off or add keys - to their own devices.13:26
WirehunterYes, that's terrible13:28
ducasseone day the manufacturer no longer updates that device, and instead of installing something like linux on it it is now a paperweight.13:29
daftykinshmm i'm only aware of some weird spin of Windows 10 that's meant for ARM hardware now13:30
daftykinslike a 10 IoT on the Pi13:30
daftykinsany thoughts on confirming whether 4K output is 30Hz or 60Hz on a mates ubuntu laptop? i was thinking Xorg log and xrandr, but i'm not 100%13:32
ducassebut at some point i'm sure they will extend that to other devices, slowly, so not too many people notice/get upset at a time.13:32
ducassedaftykins: xrandr should tell you13:32
daftykinsah good good, thanks :>13:32
Wirehunterdaftykins, maybe info on osd of monitor?13:33
daftykinsnot on a laptop, sir13:33
WirehunterAh right13:33
daftykinstried to tell him just to reboot to Windows to check a bit easier, but nope ;)13:36
ducassei like him, then ;)13:37
daftykinsoh no he just gave up entirely and called it a night13:38
daftykinsrunning a command this late!? ;)13:38
pauljwheheh13:42
ducassei can understand that, it would probably involve reading and stuff.13:43
WirehunterSo back at creating an installation medium then? :/13:45
ducassemy lord. five and a half hours, and _nothing_ to show for it.13:45
daftykinsquit while you're behind13:45
daftykins:D13:45
pauljwdaftykins, would sudo lshw work?  shows display info.13:46
daftykinshrmm not sure13:48
ducassepauljw: looks like it only lists the gpu, afaict13:49
pauljwah, okay13:49
BluesKajsudo lshw -C video13:54
WirehunterDoesn't show refreshrate for me13:55
daftykinsah i can't stand it when you give someone a command to run and minutes go by without a response13:56
pauljwi think ducasse is right about that just being gpu info13:56
ducasseme neither, it doesn't show the screens at all13:56
BluesKajwonder what the correct command would be since video obviously means the gpu and not the monitor13:59
daftykinsthink i might've been on the money with xrandr first time13:59
daftykinsif not, the full Xorg log certainly should show13:59
WirehunterWell xrandr output includes this for me "1920x1080     59.93*+"14:00
daftykinsyeah that should be sufficient14:01
nicomachusWirehunter: 59.93*+ is your refresh rate14:01
WirehunterI think the asterisk points out the mode that's in use.14:01
WirehunterI think so14:01
ducassedaftykins: the xorg logs also lists it, but it's a bit messier to read14:02
BluesKajyeah xrandr seems to give the correct resolution etc14:02
daftykinsah i'm quite used to Xorg logs :>14:03
BluesKajforgot about xrandr ...gonna try to commit that to my poor mrmory14:03
BluesKajmemory even :-)14:03
WirehunterSo many outputs http://termbin.com/9aue14:04
ducassedaftykins: yes, but i was thinking about an idiot user over phone for example :)14:04
WirehunterI wonder if I can connect two external displays on my laptop14:04
daftykinsducasse: :>14:04
daftykinsoh i'd demand logs then14:04
daftykinsi won't read logs through others :D14:04
daftykinsWirehunter: depends on the chip :>14:05
ducasse"ex dot oh ar gee vee one point..." :)14:06
Wirehunterintel 6200u and nvidia gtx 940mx connected through optimus14:06
daftykinshmm 940m surely14:07
daftykinsprobably could have internal + 2 external then mmm14:07
daftykins*finally* he responds and only has 30Hz to his 4K TV14:08
daftykins'only' :>14:08
ducassedaftykins: over what kind of connection?14:08
WirehunterHmm, maybe he can add a mode. Don't know if that would work.14:09
daftykinsDell XPS13 9360 kaby lake (7th gen) USB C to HDMI adapter cable by startech14:09
daftykinssame one as i own, except i have the skylake 935014:09
ducasseso probably hdmi 1.4, i'd guess. that would limit 4k to 30hz.14:10
daftykinsnope14:10
daftykins2.014:10
ducassereally? then 60 is possible afaik?14:10
daftykinsyep, just Linux sucking as usual *cough*14:11
* daftykins runs14:11
* ducasse throws a shoe after daftykins14:11
daftykinsnah could be his cable too, tough call14:11
Wirehunterxrandr --newmode?14:11
daftykinsnah if it doesn't get auto negotiated manual is more than likely to fail hard14:12
WirehunterI had to do that to add resolution for my 21:9 screen :P14:12
daftykinsugh those :P14:13
daftykinsYOLD!14:13
ducassedaftykins: oooo-k. he was told to write the image with something else, as we suspected it was done incorrectly. he tyhen spends a lot of time downloading rufus and receiving instructions, then when this also fails he explains he silently gave up on rufus and wrote it like last time.14:18
daftykinslmao14:18
* ducasse is close to tears14:18
daftykinswhat's the definition of insanity, again?14:19
BluesKajheh14:19
BluesKajmore like hope and desparation14:20
nicomachusfud?14:20
BluesKajillogical , but not insane14:20
daftykinswell, it's the doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result ;D14:20
BluesKajerspecially for ppl who don't know that he's actualy doing the same thing in a loop, obviously thinks something in the "works" may have changed14:22
ducassenow he's insisting on doing things his way and refusing to listen. well, i'm sure he knows best :)14:25
BluesKajthink partitoning and trying install linux in a dual boot setup is too daunting for newbs, They should start with a a simple linux install without all complications of dual booting windows. The leaning curve is much too steep for them14:25
daftykinsyep either an old machine or a VM14:26
pauljwi think they should install virtualbox14:26
BluesKajlearning curev14:26
EriC^^efivars can't be removed from the live session14:26
* BluesKaj learns to spel14:26
ducasseEriC^^: why not? what happens?14:27
daftykinsa hole in spacetime occurs14:27
daftykins;D14:27
EriC^^i'm thinking maybe just install in efi mode and then convert it to legacy and join the efi partition with swap14:27
EriC^^:D14:27
ducasseEriC^^: did you unmount them first?14:27
EriC^^ducasse: it says efivars builtin module *shrug*14:27
daftykinsah you guys are saints compared to me, i'd have long ago flipped off the screen and set ignore14:27
EriC^^i tried sudo umount efivars , it removed it from "mount" but the stuff is still in /sys/firmware/efi and the installer still thinks it's installing in uefi mode14:28
EriC^^now i got grub-efi failed to install14:28
EriC^^i didnt set an esp in the manual installer14:29
EriC^^the installer crashed though :D14:29

ducasseEriC^^: run ubiquity with -b14:29
EriC^^ok let me try that14:30
WirehunterWhy is his windows install not in uefi mode?14:30
nicomachusPentium III and 64mb RAM....? that's gonna be a tough one14:30
WirehunterI find that weird.14:30
daftykinshmm,14:30
EriC^^ducasse: you mean -d right?14:30
WirehunterI can't think of a reason for Acer to install Windows in legacymode on uefi hardware14:30
ducasseEriC^^: thought it was -b to not install bootloader14:30
EriC^^i wonder isn't there a way to hide /sys/firmware/efi from the rest of the system somehow?14:31
daftykinspretty much always seen Windows installed on a factory machine as EFI if it's EFI capable hardware - so must either be too old, or not be the original install14:31
EriC^^ducasse: oh, the man page doesn't mention it, let me try it anwyays14:31
daftykinsuser could've reinstalled via optical and so not gone EFI14:31
ducasseEriC^^: now he's installing again...in uefi mode :-P14:32
EriC^^whatt14:32
Wirehunter:')14:32
EriC^^ducasse: i think it worked, in the Something else screen there's no Bootloader location at the bottom!14:33

BluesKajtoo many cooks14:41
pauljwbecoming a wildfire out there now, isn't it BluesKaj14:46
BluesKajwell, no point confusing the situation , even if you don't agree with some of the suggestions14:46
pauljwtrue14:47
daftykinscor that was quick, measured the room a bit with a fancy laser job and off they go again14:48
daftykinsreckons he'll price it up tomorrow!14:48
BluesKajprobly just a matter of sudo dhclient14:48
pauljwwow, that was quick daftykins14:48
BluesKajremodelling eh?14:49
BluesKajrenovating rather14:49
daftykinsmy dad's keeping his distance from the quote due to it being my insurance job, so he's got a colleague to price up the total repair and rework ja14:49
pauljw:)14:50
daftykinsnow i'm messaging a mate of my dad's who works for a competing firm XD14:51
daftykinsaaaaah now i'm really tired :> been up since last night14:59
pauljwouch14:59
nicomachusgo to bed15:02
daftykinsthinking about it, but then i'd be up at midnight probably15:02
daftykinsi've only got one meal in the house XD15:03
pauljwoh no, the dreaded last meal...15:06
daftykinsmmhmm15:06
daftykins"dafty's last supper" we'll call it15:06
pauljw:)15:07
daftykinswow i am really not a fan of that word, even hearing it inside my head...15:07
nicomachusyou know, imagemagick is a GREAT tool, but sometimes I just have no idea what it's doing or why15:13
daftykinswould it not just do what you tell it?15:13
nicomachusyou would think15:14
daftykins:D15:14
nicomachusmostly I just don't know why it keeps doing weird background transparencies when I convert a gif into a montage of jpegs15:14
nicomachusso this: https://i.imgur.com/KOqRmuA.gif15:17
nicomachusends up looking like this: https://i.imgur.com/JMI1WVT.jpg15:17
daftykinshrmm15:18
nicomachusand then when I put it together with webkit as a sprite... https://www.reddit.com/r/nicomachus/15:18
nicomachusyou get that static-y monstrosity on the sidebar15:19
daftykinshrmm15:20
nicomachussee? stupid imagemagick is too smart for me.15:22
daftykinsthe funny part is i can almost see the person that made that gif putting it together from the stills to begin, then you're reversing the process15:24
nicomachusI made the gif15:26
daftykinsdamn15:26
nicomachusfrom a video15:26
nicomachusthe biggest obstacle here is reddit's limitations when it comes to uploading sprites. jpg or png only, and a max size of 500kb15:28
WirehunterAnything interesting happened during the 25 minutes I was on my way to the train?15:29
daftykinsoh it all happened!15:29
nicomachusmostly just me complaining about imagemagick and their montage feature15:29
daftykinsa feat unlikely to ever be repeated ;)15:29
daftykinsnicomachus: no shh15:30
daftykins:D15:30
nicomachusoh15:30
nicomachuswhoops15:30
nicomachusmy bad15:30
daftykinsWirehunter: nah you're all safe, zero excitement15:30
WirehunterHas our friend installed ubuntu already? :P15:30
daftykinsthat depends, have we reached the heat death of the universe?15:31
daftykinsnacc: \o15:31
naccdaftykins: mornning!15:31
nacc(at least for me :)15:31
daftykins:D15:32
nicomachusit would probably be helpful if I knew enough about the options on this man page to make use of them... but they aren't explained very well15:32
Wirehunternicomachus, I only installed ImageMagick because a gem from my ruby on rails application wants to use it for making thumbnails.15:34
nicomachusit's a handy program, that's for damn sure. but it seems to almost have TOO much functionality. haha15:48
BluesKajman pages mostly suck for non-coders like me16:00
pauljwagree BluesKaj, only seem to help me if i've already used command and forgotten what i did with it. :(16:01
pauljwdon't get old!!16:02
BluesKajmanuals are supposed to use examples if man is short for manual16:03
lordievaderMany manpages do include examples, unfortunately many also don't.16:06
lordievaderThe quality differs a lot from man page to man page.16:06
pauljwheheh... i guess we could write the man pages, but i don't see me doing that, so i try not to complain too much about them.16:06
WirehunterAh, working on partition table, almost finished installing :P16:28
Bashing-omRain and rather cool out .. thankfully, IRC here I am !16:32
ducassehi Bashing-om, you're here early?16:37
pauljwhi Bashing-om16:41
Bashing-omducasse: Outside chores rained out - Things needing doing but will all await dryer conditions.16:41
pauljwgotta go for a bit... :)16:41
ducasseBashing-om: clearing the garden for spring?16:48
nicomachusugh. since when does archive.is not allow traffic from VPNs?16:56
Bashing-omducasse: Well, garden prep is on the to-do list :) . Presently got a chore to attend .. away for a bit . be back soonest.17:21
EriC^Bashing-om: do you know a very neat way to fix clogged drains?17:22
EriC^i tried to google-help-myself i got salt+baking soda+boiling water, it seems almost worse now the lower pipe suddenly started leaking :D17:22
EriC^i dunno if it matters i poured a bunch of vinegar cause it was recommended with just baking soda in the end, that's when it went bad and started leaking from below17:23
naccEriC^: do you know what it's clogged with?17:23
OerHeksBaking Soda and Vinegar, use it directly as it starts to gas immediatly, don't inhale! ...17:23
EriC^nacc: i think it's just hair and stuff like that17:24
naccEriC^: do you have a drain snake? i think like 10-15 at the hardware store17:24
EriC^nope i tried to get the drain thing off but it didn't have a screw at all and screw driver wouldn't buldge it17:25
EriC^i was thinking to get a water hose and push it as far as i could back and forth17:25
naccEriC^: the drain cap is usually reverse threaded17:25
EriC^aha17:25
EriC^let me try to turn it17:26
naccdepending on the type, i suppose17:26
naccin our showers, there's a threaded screw cover17:26
naccbut the underlying shaft (which is screwed into drain) is reverse threaded so you can't accidentally pull it out17:26
Bashing-omEriC^: Best solution long term that I know of - depending  on where the stoppage is - is to take the P-trap apart and run a wire down the drain . Most pfyem if in the bath room is haid clogging @ the pop-up plug mechanisum . Here one can just pull that plug and a coard hanker with a small hook will pull that hair out the top :)17:26
naccyeah, a coat hanger is a good idea, if it's clumped already17:27
naccthe snake just makes it easier to catch it, as you spin a whisk-like end through17:27
naccEriC^: i will say, if the screw hasn't been budged in a while, they are likely very tight :/17:27
EriC^yeah, i couldn't loosen it up17:28
EriC^i'll try the coat hanger17:28
ducasseafter nine hours and twelve minutes: <Eric> eric^ its working now its installing17:34
EriC^coat hanger did the job, i poked around in the middle a bit and it started flowing again17:35
EriC^thanks guys17:35
DJonesToo many eric*'s inm #u to follow :)17:44
nicomachusEriC^ and Eric.... yea. And wasn't there a Eric____ or something, too?17:47
ducassethat's the same one as Eric, and Eric^ is Eric^^ ;)17:48
EriC^this is like solving a puzzle, how to get info from him in a way that's easy17:51
EriC^dpkg -l | nah, there's a pipe it might complicate stuff, dpkg -l grub* nah it would be difficult to explain the ii at the start, hmm17:52
ducassei gave up on him yesterday, when he refused to answer questions. you're doing great :)17:52
EriC^it's like when you play video games, this is one of the hard levels you choose when you start it17:52
EriC^xD17:52
ducassedear $deity, now crazytux is here as well :-(17:56
BluesKajpanic city18:00
Bashing-omEriC^: Put a small hook on the coat hanger - see what you can pull back out .18:08
BluesKajhe's become totally intimidated by the process...can't think for himself at all18:11
Bashing-omBluesKaj: EriC^ A 12 year old ? Seems likely .18:13
BluesKajmaybe18:13
ducassewhat's he going to _do_ with ubuntu when it's finally installed? we're all going to need professional help if he keeps coming back for every little thing.18:13
EriC^he could be 1218:13
EriC^i think he's older but not so good with computers18:14
ducasseif he's a kid, then why not just say so?18:14
EriC^he has a cellphone18:16
EriC^i guess he's like 3018:16
EriC^he reminds me a tad when i helped my dad to try to install lubuntu18:17
Bashing-om30 then is no excuse for a failure to think :)18:17
EriC^he was asking every single step of the way, probably cause he knows i'm alright with computers or something18:17
ducasseright now i think he's asking proactively, if you know what i mean? so that if he hits a problem, he's already got your attention.18:18
EriC^then i told him to kind of get adventurous and stuff and he kind of went for it18:18
EriC^i think i was like what have you done the next time we talked18:19
EriC^yeah he's a tough one to crack18:19
EriC^the guy from the channel18:20
EriC^well he's done finally (almost)18:23
EriC^hopefully ubuntu benefits him18:24
ducasselet's hope so. you deserve a beer or something for this one :)18:26
EriC^ducasse: that -b flag for ubiquity was awesome, it can save a lot of time in cases like this for converting from uefi to legacy and such18:26
EriC^i learned parted -sl for ignoring those pesky ignore/continue questions that wont let it work with termbin18:31
EriC^i think he's just screwing with us i swear18:32
EriC^lol i say choose /dev/sda the first one (it's already highlighted) he pastes [] - /dev/sdb ....i dunno who knows18:33
EriC^i hope he says something in the end like, ha ha i was just screwing with you guys, i'm actually <some famous dev here or something> and i was just really bored today and a little drunk18:34
Bashing-omEriC^: ^ in that case . I would not know to be very angry .. and very relieved :) I lost patience with him several days ago .18:36
EriC^yeah i'd be pretty pissed if he said that18:36
EriC^it would make a lot more sense though18:37
EriC^mystery solved and all18:37
EriC^we're practically dos'ing imgur today :D18:38
ducasseEriC^: if that does turn out to be the case, i'm going to swear at him for wasting so much volunteer time...18:48
BluesKajsomehow I don't think he's a dev just playing around for his own amusement ...this has gone on too long for that18:52
EriC^i wonder how they used to manually boot grub in the older days19:21
ducassethey didn't, they used lilo :-P19:22
EriC^with uefi ls -l shows the uuid of the partitions, so it's easy to write it in the linux command to use root=UUID= but what about in legacy ls just shows the hdd names19:22
EriC^lol19:22
EriC^if you had a kazillion hdd's and partitions then giving it root=/dev/<your best guess here> would suck19:22
EriC^unless there's a better way, involving making a pitstop at the initram shell or something?19:23
EriC^i'm off for a drive19:49
ducasseEriC^: enjoy :)19:50
pauljwlater..19:50
EriC^screw it, little lazy now, i'll just drink some beer or something in bed19:50
EriC^lol19:50
pauljwheheh19:50
ducasseyou deserve it :)19:50
Bashing-omBe careful . IRC does not have all the idiots .19:51
ducasse"beer in bed - you're worth it!"19:51
WirehunterI'm working on a report on my internship using word 2016 in a vm running windows 10. It's truly an awful experience with freezes and crashes. Would not recommend.20:35
WirehunterI should have used LaTex :(20:36
ducasseit's not too late - repent! ;)20:36
WirehunterYes it is, It has to be handed in within 2 hours20:37
WirehunterThe worst thing is that I started out with LaTex and switched to Word from laziness.20:39
ducasseah. then i guess you just have to hope the next two hours are relatively troublefree :(20:39
WirehunterAnd It's so weird that Sharepoint integration is horrible on Word 2016. I never had any issues with word on OS X, but well, my MacBook is ancient. :P20:43
ducasseBashing-om: finished outside for the day?21:29
Bashing-omducasse: Oh, not uet . still with water delivery issues :( In and out of the house looking the sloppyation over . Beginning to think the pressure switch is the problem on the well head .21:32
Bashing-omyet*21:32
ducasseis it going to be a lot of work and/or expensive to fix?21:35
Bashing-omducasse: Worst case if it is the pressure switch - bout 40 USD and an hour of time . Been there before :)21:37
Bashing-om( I got a plan to check and see !)21:38
ducasseBashing-om: oh, that's not too bad i guess. best of luck anyway, may your property not turn into a swamp :)21:40
Bashing-omducasse: Too late for the swamp - hard rains last night ! That the reason why I have not gone under the house(s) looking for water leaks .21:43
ducasseoof :( i'm lucky enough not to have such problems :)21:47
Bashing-omPros and cons of living on a farm ( retired ) and in an old old farm house :)21:54
ducassethis is a modern terrace (i think is the right term) halfway up a hill, so water has somewhere it would rather be :)21:59
Bashing-omducasse: "modern terrace" built on a concrete slab ? Worst case situation then is a water leak in the pipes embeded in that slab !22:01
ducassei honestly do not know exactly how it's buildt, i've never tried ripping it all up :) they tore down the porch last summer, and beneath that was a layer of some sort of polystyrene or something and a thick layer of gravel - for drainage, they said.22:05
Bashing-omducasse: Uh Huh .. let us not fret over what ain't . No leak no worry !22:11
ducasseBashing-om: was kind of sad when the underfloor heating in the bathroom broke, though. "yeah, we'll have to rip up the floor for a week or so to fix this", so they just installed this heater thingy over the door.22:13
Bashing-omducasse: Sure soinds like " concrete slab " .. pros and cons ...  pros and cons ! .. Fine 'til there is a "problem" .22:15
ducasseBashing-om: yep, glad it's not something i need to deal much with if something happens.22:19
ducassebetter get ready for bed, nearly midnight and been here for 14 hours :-/22:20
Bashing-omducasse: Rest and recouperation - At that time of 14 hours my eyes do not funtion too well and difficult to engage brain .22:21
ducasseBashing-om: me neither, getting old i guess ;) ttyl!22:23
Bashing-omNighy note ducasse :)22:29
WirehunterIs anyone running nvidia optimus using bumblebee? I tried that when I first installed this laptop, but gave up because I didn't get it to work.23:26
