insanity99Hey guys00:04
Bashing-ominsanity99: :) .. What new adventure have you found ?00:08
Budgiiwassup insanity9900:08
insanity99Bashing-om,  Oh well I installed arch linux successfully haha00:10
insanity99But no drama thankfully :D00:10
insanity99hey Budgii00:11
Budgiiwhats good insanity99?00:13
ShellcatZerodumb question: when I see warnings about init scripts, where should I find these files?  For example: insserv: warning: script 'K01xfce4-power-manager' missing LSB tags and overrides.  I've checked in /etc/init and /etc/init.d and I cannot find a script with this name00:13
Sven_vBmy new USB device doesn't work, syslog says "device descriptor read/64, error -32" and "device not accepting address 81, error -32" (more messages: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Q6XhMfV5rn/ ) so I tried the workaround "modprobe -r ehci_hcd" from forum thread https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=782007 but "modprobe: FATAL: Module ehci_hcd is builtin." :< any other ideas?00:14
tomreynShellcatZero: /etc/rc?.d/00:18
phoenix_firebrdSven_vB: what is the device?, some of the drivers of older devices got archived00:18
=== Sven_vB_ is now known as Sven_vB
Sven_vBphoenix_firebrd, it'S a USB to RS-232 adapter. actually I've two of them, the other is detected as "ch341 1-1.1:1.0: ch341-uart converter detected" "usb 1-1.1: ch341-uart converter now attached to ttyUSB0"00:20
ShellcatZeroawesome, thank you tomreyn00:20
tomreyn:)00:20
TJ-Sven_vB: sounds like a bad device or connection00:22
Sven_vBTJ-, I suspected that, so I tried with my netbook, and there the problematic adapter is detected immediately00:23
tomreynSven_vB: which OS does your netbook run?00:24
Sven_vBUbuntu trusty00:24
TJ-Sven_vB: is this a direct connect into a PC port, or via a hub?00:24
Sven_vBsame as here on my IRC notebook00:24
tomreynand th eone which exhibits the error?00:25
tomreynok00:25
Sven_vBTJ-, it's connected directly, vs. via extension cable on my notebook. I'll compare that, too.00:25
tomreynso it needs to be hardware / environment specific00:25
Sven_vBI didn't suspect the extension cable because the other RS-232 adapter had no problem with it00:25
TabMasherCan anyone recommend a good cloud backup service that supports Ubuntu?  I need to backup my /home and a few external hard-drives.00:28
Sven_vBwith direct connection, it works on my notebook, too. that's good enough for me for now. :)00:28
Sven_vBthanks!00:28
Sven_vBmight the problem be about total cable length? does the error seem like the picky adapter cable might have worse electrical quality?00:31
TJ-Sven_vB: yes, exactly that00:31
Sven_vBwhat are my chances of solving the problem by having the cable shortened? I could ask a friend to cut out most of the middle and solder it back together00:33
TabMasherI can find several good cloud backup services, but they basically only support Windows and OSX... :(00:34
TabMasherAnd the idea of using NTFS for my /home and dual booting windows isn't a plesant one.00:36
Sven_vBTabMasher, what features are you looking for?00:36

TabMasherSven_vB: Right on the mark.00:39
Sven_vBTabMasher, how many weeks prior notice of price changes? (aka how long will it take you to escape)00:40
TabMasherBandwidth is also a factor.  some are ultra slow, and some are limited but much faster.00:40
tehbigappleI am going to call the embassys; sorry prof00:41
TabMasherSven_vB: I've never considered the price change.  Most of them allow a user to make an annual payment.00:41
TabMasherBackblaze is $50 a year, unlimited, supports external drives, but that doesn't do me much good on ubuntu so far as I can tell.00:42
TabMasherDoes anyone here use a "cloud based" backup service at all?00:44
tomreynhttps://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/articles/217664628-Is-Backblaze-going-to-offer-Linux-support-00:45

ShellcatZerowhat would you recommend to do to investigate this error? https://pastebin.com/ZhwNAxVA00:47
tehbigappleget a real job00:47
Sven_vBTabMasher, I'm planning on implementing off-site backups in the future, but I'll probably have enough disk on my webservers and if that runs out, I'll probably just combine lots of free storage accounts on serveral services.00:47
bugbunnyTabMasher: I pay 2.50 USD for 15TB00:47

TabMasherSven_vB: lol, I have a LOT of media content.  I make a ton of video, audio and photo data, and it keeps increasing every year.  I use onsite backup but the very real threat of theft, fire, flood, whatever really has me worried since there was a recent theft in the neighborhood.  I wish I had someplace to house my own offsite backup.00:56
ShellcatZeroit sounds like you're having issues with your graphics driver insanity99, have a look at https://askubuntu.com/questions/654566/steam-doesnt-start-libgl-error00:57

TabMasheragio: I have to keep the original source data, and the files are absolutely huge, indeed.01:00
insanity99Thank you guys, removing the libstdc++.so.6 file fixed it for some reason01:00
Sven_vBTabMasher, maybe you can find people in your area who have the same problem and would pair with you for storing the other's backup. for some of the data, pooling it might yield good deduplication.01:02
TabMasherI can even encrypt them and break them down into smaller file segments for network/cloud storage if I need to if the cloud service only handled files of limited size...01:02
agioTabMasher: one option I guess would be to have 2 backup copies. One offsite which is safe, but say a week or so old, and another with the machine which you rsync (or some other backup program) out to everyday - or twice a day etc...01:03
TabMasheragio: That might work too, if I could find someone I'd trust to keep it safe.  heh.  HD space is relatively cheap and there's equity in the purchase too.01:05

ddhkWhat's the difference between Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS and Ubuntu 17.10.1 if I just want to experiment with Ubuntu for the the first time on a virtual machine.04:04
agio17.10 will almost be at "end of life" - next month04:05
guivercddhk, LTS is a long term support release (from 2016-April hence 16.04, two major updates) - LTS are generally more stable. 17.10 is from 2017-October so will contain later software; but may not be as stable as ~LTS)04:05
ddhkOk so I should go with LTS version then04:06
SheilongBashing-om:  thanks for your help.04:06
SheilongI am using gnome instead.04:06
SheilongUntill figure out how to fix it04:06
guiverc2017-oct release comes with 9 months life; so a few months support remains04:07
Bashing-omSheilong: That is a solution - sorry we could not resolve to unity .04:07
guivercddhk, your usage will determine best for you.  if you're learning Ubuntu, using a shorter-life will also let you experience the release-upgrading (upgrading to 18.04 will need to occur faster) faster than 16.04LTS which won't occur till 18.04.1 gets released much later this year (unless forced)04:09
ddhkguiverc I just want to install it on a virtual machine as I'm still very dependant on windows right now. And I want to play around with it and learn it before installing in directly onto my laptop04:11
donofrioddhk, "Why not both" perhaps use WSL (http://www.tinyurl.com/donofrio1804 - mysetup is when you have no "Store access"))04:12
guivercddhk,  both will do that role - its up to you. 17.10 has later software, a much shorter life (9mnths over half over, 16.04 hasn't reached half yet!).. both will teach you stuff..04:13
ddhkWhy are there 2 versions? Did I miss something?04:13
donofrioddhk, (skip unneeded onedrive login)04:14
ddhkUbuntu has a onedrive login?04:15
tomreynit does not04:17
donofriono onedrive has a onedrive login04:17
ddhkOk you got me confused because I was talking about Ubuntu not Microsoft Onedrive.04:18
donofrioI'll goto mute don't mind me04:18
donofrioI seen windows and ubuntu and figured04:18
ddhkAh04:19
guivercddhk, two versions?  not sure what you meant.   non-LTS versions are for those that want the latest & don't mind release-upgrading regularly.  LTS releases are for those that want stability & want their installs to last years04:19
ddhkguiverc: ah ok04:19
agiohi, I see in the apt repo (universe) a package "xul-ext-ublock-origin" - is this a firefox addon/extension? I didn't know you could add a firefox addon through apt-get? is adding a firefox extension via apt-get the same as adding it through firefox UI?04:23
ShellcatZerovexorr: I haven't done this in a long time, but you will want to select the "something else" option, and then from there you may be able to see your microsd disk as place to install to.  See https://askubuntu.com/questions/343268/how-to-use-manual-partitioning-during-installation.04:26
ShellcatZerovexorr: if you are doing the install from a livecd, you should be able to first verify that your microsd is recognized as a disk from the command line.04:27

ddhkI'm mostly worried about all my Microsoft Office docs04:39
tomreynddhk: libreoffice will open them fine, although there can be differences in presentation (and those will get saved if you do it). other than that the correct answerr to this is probably: you chose to have vendor lock in there long ago, and accepted the results. there are comptatible (but also more simple) formats such as RTF, Markdown, HTML. And Latex, of course. :)04:42
agiotomreyn: when you say installing a package like "xul-ext-ublock-origin" - it becomes available system wide? do you mean other program can use it? or other users on the system? I don't get how programs other than firefox could use a firefox addon/extension?04:45

guivercneed more space?  do you mean you want to create a swap partition?  you can use `gparted` to shrink a partition then create a swap partition without re-installing.    pythonick09:06
guivercgparted can't shrink a partition in use; so you can reboot your system & use your ubuntu install media (using try-ubuntu), not load your partitions, then you can shrink them.  if you move your / or /boot partition (and use grub), you may need to repair your mbr (as it may point to old position), but this may not be required; and can be fixed too (without re-install)09:08

agioneildugan: usually that would come the recipient MTA - because firstly root@anywhere is generally recognised to be a  bad email address and also generally name@domain is not a fully qualified name - it can never pass email authentication10:58
agioneildugan: usually you would make an entry in either `/etc/aliases' like11:04
agiopostmaster:    root11:04
agioroot: name.last@domain.com11:04
agiowhich tells postfix to re-address any mail addressed to root within the local system to `name.last@domain.com'11:05
agioI think you may need to run command like `sudo newaliases' afterwards too.11:05
agioanother way is to put the target email address into /root/.forward  and postfix might look there for the re-address. problem is the different MTA's postfix, exim etc have different config behaviours - Im not specifically familiar with exim11:08

JimBunturealies, I know there is a distro that boots up and puts itself into RAM, then you can pull the boot media/etc, I can't remember it's name at the moment.11:52
realiesJimBuntu, let me know if you do, ill have a look too11:52
JimBunturealies, "Puppy Linux" is one of them. You can use Woof to build a "Puppy" variant of other distros. I think you will still need to manually configure the persistent portion... which could be a little tricky if you intend to remove the boot media.11:54

Jakethepythonok12:12
TJ-Jakethepython: you mean just connecting the Ethernet cable causes the problem? That suggests there's a fault in the cable or in the PC's NIC letting stray voltages in12:12
JimBuntuJakethepython, I doubt I will be the one to help with this, but if you could better describe how it "crashed" your network, and perhaps include a few pastebins such as /etc/network/interfaces, that might help12:12
Jakethepython(it could be cable or NIC card) but basically if i plug in the server all other nodes on the network can't ping internal or external to the nextwork or the ping time is like 4000 mS for internal 10000 external12:14
TJ-Jakethepython: if it's a case of the LAN losing Internnet connectivity *and* it uses IPv6, there's a possibility your PC is doing IPv6 NDP (Neighbour Discovery Protocol). That's known to cause problems when other routers are on the network and responsible for routing.12:15

JimBuntuR13ose, clean your keyboard?13:10
JimBuntuYou will probably need to add some context to your question... as in, is this happening in the browser... does it happen in a terminal... does it happen with any other keyboard plugged in (without this one plugged in)... have you installed anything additional related to the keyboard... et cetera13:11
R13oseJimBuntu: happens in everywhere I can type text.  I don't have another keyboard to try.  Nothing I installed that I know of related to keyboard13:16
JimBuntuR13ose, Then I would start by cleaning the keyboard, under the "+/=" key. If this is an external keyboard, you could also try it on another computer... if you have one.13:18
JimBuntuDoes that key feel any different when you press down on it?13:18
EriC^^R13ose: it sounds like the keyboard has a shortcircuit somewhere13:19

TheWilddoes the GUI package manager (Ubuntu Software) ever work? For me it's always stuck at this rotating something.14:24
BillD73TheWild: i get the same thing  some times it takes a couple minutes before it loads completely14:24
tomreynR13ose: linux-generic is a meta package whiuch depends on the latest available (official) ubuntu kernel. you should probably purge the more specifically named kernel package instead. i don't think "autoremove" takes a package argument (try: sudo apt-get purge PACKAGENAME)14:25
tomreynR13ose: use this to find out installed ubuntu kernel packages: dpkg -l linux-image\*14:25
kostkonTheWild, same here. haven't bothered to look for a solution other than rebooting14:26
tomreynR13ose: for example, you mway want to remove/purge "linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic"14:26

merpnderpI'm running into a weird issue with ubuntu 16.04 and nginx. nginx -t says my conf files are correct, but it isn't listening in on 443. 80 responds normally, but 443 is instantly refused. I ran a process listening on 443 and it works, so it isn't a network issue. I'm copying a conf file from a 17.04 install, but I can't imagine what would be set up differently.14:32
tomreynskinux: those seem to be part of "ubuntu-touch-sounds", maybe this package is not installed by default.14:33
tomreynmerpnderp: does netstat or ss show it as listening?14:35
merpnderptomreyn: no, netstat says nginx is not listening to 443, only 8014:35
tomreynmerpnderp: what about "sudo lsof -i :443"14:35
merpnderptomreyn: it's almost like the include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; is being ignored.14:36
merpnderptomreyn: lsof -f :443 returned nothing14:36
merpnderpsuod14:36
merpnderpsudo :D14:36
merpnderptomreyn: nothing in the error logs. If there was a conf error nginx wouldn't even be running.14:37
tomreynmerpnderp: so nginx does indeed not bind to this port. next step: find out why.14:37
merpnderptomreyn: for some reason the default nginx logs in 16.04 aren't very verbose.14:37
tomreynyou could strace the nginx process to see which files it accesses (and which it does not).14:37
merpnderptomreyn: good point14:37

neilduganyeats, but when I set the fqdn to the same as the <from> i.e. "aurous.net" the emails never get sent out.15:36

yeatsneildugan: sounds like multiple issues - the MX issue needs to be fixed, which may resolve the others15:37
R13oseBillD73: I think so but not 100% yet15:37
memo1ppf: thanks bro!.15:37
yeatsneildugan: do you have access to DNS setup for that domain?15:37

BillD73R13ose: ok just close everything and use Juice from your phone  we still want to run      sudo apt-get autreomve15:39
neilduganyeats, not to my knowledge ... I just want the damned server to send emails ... postfix just seems to be far to complex...15:39

neilduganyeats, I can't get it to just send an email out.15:41
yeatsneildugan: you need to talk to whoever manages the domain to get the MX record fixed (it's actually not that hard once you/they have researched what to change)15:42
yutatomreyn that error was outputed by sudo apt-get install update-manager-core update-manager15:42
tomreynmemo1: you could setup a cron job to check the file system allocation and notify you when it reached / surpasses 80%15:42
yeatsneildugan: in other words, it doesn't make sense (imho) to spin your wheels on something that's out of your ability to fix :-)15:42

R13oseBillD73: I already removed one kernel15:44
memo1ppf: hi, it fails, it said Network Unreacheable15:44
yutatomreyn: i dont know, i changed the apt-sources list from my country repositories to principal repositories and ran apt-get update15:45
BillD73R13ose: that alone should have been enough to clear up space for apt to work15:45
yutatomreyn: i tried to install them following this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades15:45

tomreynmemo1: so you know which failes you can safely delete?15:48
BillD73tomreyn: alot of full /boot lately15:49

BillD73R13ose: something else has /boot full15:50
zanshinexit15:50
tomreynBillD73: it is not unusual, the installers used a (too) conservative approach for examining the size the /boot file system (or partition) should have, for a long time.15:50
R13oseBillD73: I also removed another kernel before I used your command15:51
tomreynyuta: which kernel is now running? cat /proc/version15:51
yutatomreyn: which kernels are safe to delete and how to do that?15:52
yutatomreyn: Linux version 4.10.0-37-generic (buildd@lgw01-amd64-021) (gcc version 6.3.0 20170406 (Ubuntu 6.3.0-12ubuntu2) ) #41-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 6 20:20:37 UTC 201715:52
BillD73tomreyn: not surprising15:52
BillD73R13ose: can you now via phone/Juice run sudo apt-get autoremove15:53
neilduganyeats, I found one mistake, now when I send an email to directly to the alias it works :-) but when I send to 'root' it still isn't using the alias15:53
R13oseBillD73: now boot is not full but still same error.15:54
memo1tomreyn: old data, sr15:54
tomreynmemo1: you can use the "find" command to identify and even delete files which have not been modified for a given duration. read the man page and look at the -mtime and -delete options. try it without -delete first to make sure the correct files are listed.15:55
BillD73R13ose: ok lets try this   sudo update-grub215:55

neilduganyuta, have you tried "apt autoremove"15:59
tomreynyuta: sorry for making you wait. please run: sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-4.10.0-19-generic linux-image-4.10.0-26-generic linux-image-4.10.0-28-generic linux-image-4.10.0-30-generic linux-image-4.10.0-32-generic linux-image-4.10.0-33-generic linux-image-4.10.0-35-generic15:59

yutaneildugan: yes, i tried before but no luck16:01
tomreynyuta: yes this would be helpful16:01
yutatomreyn: it is in spanish, how can output in english only for this time?16:01
tomreynyuta: export LANG=C16:01

BillD73R13ose: its always possible to loose stuff thats what backups are for16:42
Kingsy[m]Does anyone know if there is an ISO available for Ubuntu minimal 18.04? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD only seems to have 17.10..16:43
pragmaticenigmaKingsy[m], 18.04 hasn't been released yet. See /join #ubuntu+1 for more information16:43
Kingsy[m]Ok16:44
tomreynR13ose / BillD73: which size is /boot there currently=16:44
tomreyn?16:44
BillD73tomreyn: 236M iirc16:44
tomreynhmm okay yes that's not too much. on the other hand current releases do proper house keeping and then it *may* actually suffice16:45
BillD73tomreyn: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/bgbfwfyfH6/    their df output16:45
tomreynThanks BillD73.16:45
tomreynR13ose: i could try to guide you through resizing /boot, but this would only make sense if you have current, complete and restorable backups and a usb stick / pen drive with your current ubuntu release installer prepared.16:47
tomreynit would also take an hour or two16:47
R13osetomreyn: I don't have either16:47
tomreynR13ose: you should always have both, so that's something to work on next16:48
yutaare ubuntu encrypted partitions vulnerable to be decrypted?16:48
R13osetomreyn: no usb stick large enough16:48
tomreynR13ose: how large is yours?16:48
BillD73R13ose: to make a "live" you only need about 2GB stick16:49
tomreynyuta: there are not "encrypted partitions", are you referring to dmcrypt-LUKS?16:49
R13osetomreyn: small16:50
yutatomreyn: i refer to the ubuntu function to encrypt the home folder, that prompts you for the password when boot to decrypt the data16:50
tomreynR13ose: okay if it's smaller than 2 GB you should probably buy a new one indeed, since the existing one will be old and becoming unreliable.16:50
R13oseCan I not resize within Ubuntu?16:50
BillD73R13ose: no   you would need to unmount the disk while running the live cd16:51
tomreynR13ose: no, this needs to be done from a separate system since you will need to shrink the existing ubuntu system, and you can't shrink the system that is currently active.16:51
R13oseGparted will not help?16:52
tomreynR13ose: also without backups you should not even think about such changes which can easily mean complete data loss16:52
BillD73^^16:52
R13oseWell, how do I get rid of some of the /boot then?16:53
tomreynR13ose: please show: dpkg -l linux-image\*16:53
R13osetomreyn: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/cwWRW2NQv8/16:55

tomreynR13ose: and finally: cat /proc/version16:58
pragmaticenigmayuta, there are two types of encrytion supported. Full system, which requires a password to boot the machine. User encryption, which encrypts the home folder of the user only (decrypted on login).16:59
R13osetomreyn: first one http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/M2xHVB63YF/17:00
R13osetomreyn: Linux version 4.15.15-gnu (root@pc) (gcc version 4.7.2 (Debian 4.7.2-5)) #1 SMP Sat Mar 31 18:03:56 UTC 201817:01
tomreynyuta: sorry, i missed your reply. the home directory encryption you are referring to is called ecryptfs. they can be decrypted by anyone who has the decryption passphrase (or can reproduce it, such as due to a weak passphrase), by default, this passphrase is the same as your users login password..17:01
pragmaticenigmayuta, with a sufficiently difficult password, it will help protect your data. I'd recommend reading up on system encryption. A good place to start is here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/909432/how-secure-is-an-encrypted-partition17:01
tomreynyuta: this encryption mechanism is not known to be broken, if that's what you meant.17:01
tomreynR13ose: so, why do you use non ubuntu kernels on your ubuntu system?17:02
tomreynR13ose: that's fine if you know what you're doing and why.17:03
tomreynR13ose: (it is, however, not supported here)17:03
R13osetomreyn: I know but this is why I use that: "... removing any software that does not include its source code, has its source code obfuscated, or is released under proprietary licenses."17:04
tomreynR13ose: i do not understand what this quote refers to17:05
yutathanks to both, that was i want to know.17:06
R13osetomreyn: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux-libre17:06
tomreynR13ose: well it's unrelated to the issue at hand, but i recommend you use ubuntu kernels on ubuntu unless you know why exactly you deviate and whether that's safe to do, and what the implications are.17:06
yutai cant cat /etc/passwd from non-root user. that is bad?17:07
R13osetomreyn: I know all of that17:07
yutacan*17:07
tomreynR13ose: good, let's carry on. can you show ls -lh /boot/17:08
FreeStaffhello guys;17:08
FreeStaffhow can i share my internet connection on eth0 to eth1 on dhcp?17:08
JimBuntuyuta, what about /etc/passwd~ ?17:08
tomreynyuta: a non-root user should normally be able to access /etc/passwd since by default it is world readable: -rw-r--r--17:09
R13osetomreyn: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/3b4rkVvchR/17:09
yutabut that file contains password hashes?17:10
bjonnhI'm getting a black screen after installing Ubuntu server 16.04 on a machine. I tried to replace "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" and to "acpi_osi=Linux" but still have black screen17:10
JimBuntuyuta, look for yourself... do you see hashes?17:10
bjonnhit seems to boot properly in the back though17:10
yutaJimBuntu: no xd17:10
JimBuntuyuta, now check out the /etc/passwd~ for hashes17:10
yutabut can, for example, you have a vulnerable site running on a webserver, the attacker could see that file and try to guess passwords17:11
bjonnh(no GUI installed)17:11
JimBuntusorry, I meant /etc/passwd-17:11
yutaJimBuntu: no hashes there too17:11
JimBuntuyuta, YAY17:11
JimBuntuyuta, on to the other question though... so an actor somehow gets shell access on your web server... sees the passwd file and now knows possibly valid usernames, is that the concern?17:12
yutaJimBuntu: then, where do the system saves the hashes?17:12
JimBuntuyuta, try sudo cat /etc/shadow17:12
yutaJimBuntu: nah, with shell access you are already fucked. i mean, with some web vulnerabilitie like file uploads17:12
tomreynR13ose: okay so you still have intrd images in place which apt and dpkg are not aware of. since you have no matching kernels available for these you can probably just delete them: sudo rm /boot/initrd.img-4.10.0-??-generic /boot/initrd.img-4.13.0-{25,36}-generic17:13
yutaJimBuntu:  i see now, haha17:13
JimBuntuWell, if they can maneuver their way back to /etc/passwd... then I suppose they will get a user list. Next topic though is how they get in... you shouldn't have password auth enabled for SSH. and if this is a production environment that you want to keep clean, then it shouldn't have a telnet server running17:13
tomreynR13ose: do you want to remove the ubuntu kernels completely and just use the trisquel ones then, or do you prefer to have both installed side by side?17:14
bjonnhvga=788 nosplash  doesn't do it either17:14
bjonnhweird the install worked properly and debian worked properly…17:15
R13osetomreyn: I did the command.  I feel having the newest Ubuntu kernel along side is good if anything goes wrong with the other kernel.  If you feel I should only keep one, I can do that too.17:16
tomreynR13ose: you said you know what you're doing and what the implication sare, so i don't think you need any further recommendations on this from me. ;-)17:19
TJ-bjonnh: is GRUB set to use a GFX mode rather than text? check /etc/default/grub17:21
tomreynR13ose: you could also remove the 4.15.13 kernel images, headers and initrd since you have a newer triquel kernel installed, too.17:21
R13osetomreyn: should I try to upgrade again?17:21
tomreynR13ose: it will probably remove the trisquel kernel, and since you'Re not running an ubuntu kernel, the upgrade may fail. but that's one of the implications you're already aware of, so YMMV17:22
R13oseYMMV?17:22
palmtreehi, I need some help with the Ubuntu Live on a Macbook Pro... I've installed it correctly on a USB and it's currently running... what I want to do is to access the Macintosh HD partition of the HDD inside the Mac from the Live Ubuntu... how can I do it? IsFunnyI think at least :/19:22
IsFunnyWait let's start over please19:22
TJ-IsFunny: and you think the problem is between BIOS > disk 019:22

IsFunny3 for pure storage, one for the system19:22
IsFunnyThe system is just a ubuntu installation without gui19:22

TJ-IsFunny: right (lets assume those 3 storage disks are all allocated to "LVM" then19:23

TJ-IsFunny: so maybe we have (for booting) PC > BIOS > disk 0 > GRUB > vmlinux + initrd.img > rootfs19:23
IsFunnyWhem booting livecd i can by the way browse systme disk and the lvm disk19:24
TJ-IsFunny: and you cannot get to the GRUB boot menu by pressing Shift or Escape at boot-time... suggests GRUB never gets loaded19:24
IsFunnyYes, sounds about right.19:24
IsFunnyYes. And i also tried reinstalling grub from livecd with chroot and all that fun19:24
TJ-IsFunny: so that means it is likely stuck doing only PC > BIOS > disk X !!!! can't find GRUB !!!!19:24
merpnderpAnyone looking at OVH with their unlimited bandwidth?19:25
IsFunnyNow i tried super grub disk and it said the error above19:25
IsFunnyTJ- could be but why would it19:25
ioriaIsFunny, chroot and paste   df -h and sudo parted -l19:26
TJ-IsFunny: the most obvious issue is the BIOS has 'forgotten' the correct boot order and is trying to boot from one of those storage disks. Are all 4 disks in the system the same make/model. If not, do you know for sure which make/model is the boot disk ?19:26
TJ-IsFunny: it won't matter how much you do with a chroot if BIOS is trying to boot from the wrong disk19:27
IsFunnyThey are literally jbod :D so not the same make/model19:27
IsFunnyMostly laptop disks which i replaced by ssds19:27
ioriai'am out19:27
TJ-IsFunny: OK, you need absolute facts in these situations. Boot a LiveISO, find the boot disk and get it's make/model/serial number... then reboot into BIOS and ensure that disk is set as first in the boot order.19:28
IsFunnyAlright19:28
TJ-IsFunny: once you've got the LiveISO Try Ubuntu session running, and have found the device with the OS on, you can get the disk identity usually by doing "ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/" and matching the /dev/sdX to the ID19:29
IsFunnyThe ubuntu explorer already shows the disk19:33
IsFunnyCan i get mkre info than just the id of the disk?19:33

linuxr_hello everyone - I just installed latest ubuntu 16.04 on an acer aspire v3 laptop. Before installing, I made sure that the bios runs in "Legacy Mode". Installation went fine, but when booting, I get an error message "No bootable device found". In the bios however I can see the hard drive, and when manually opening the boot menu, I can also select it and boot from it. Any ideas?19:40
yutalinuxr_: maybe you have to configure the boot secuence to boot from hard drive?19:41
TJ-linuxr_: maybe the CSM/BIOS mode doesn't have a boot-order and you have to use manual selection19:42
linuxr_yuta, also thought that, made sure that the disk is first priority - same result19:42
=== fabricius1 is now known as fabricius

linuxr_it's really strange - never seen that before19:42
yutalinuxr_: are you sure that hard drive is first priority?19:43
yutalinuxr_: yeah it is strange... if hard drive is FIRST priority, has to boot19:43
linuxr_TJ-, can I also boot ubuntu in UEFI mmode? does this require a re-installation with bios in UEFI mode?19:43
linuxr_yuta, yes it has19:43

TJ-IsFunny: whilst you've got it on the LiveISO do you want to go through the steps to ensure GRUB is correctly installed, before rebooting and checking the BIOS boot order points to that WDC WD64.... first?19:52
IsFunnyTJ- I've added one last image to the link above, it shows the boot options/disks19:52
IsFunnyTJ- i already reinstalled grub if you are thinking about that19:52
TJ-IsFunny: right, that looks like they're wrong. The first should be SATA:4S-WDC WD64...19:53
IsFunnyI've got a grub loading message19:53
TJ-IsFunny: OK, but I wasn't sure if GRUB was installed correctly. However, your BIOS boot order is obviously wrong, so correct it as I just said and I think it'll be ok19:53

R13oseSven_vB: I checked but unsure20:30
Sven_vBR13ose, for a real solution you'll have to test with another keyboard to check whether it's a hardware or software problem. as a temporary fix you could try remapping your keyboard layout so the old + key(s) have no effect.20:39
R13oseSven_vB: how do I do that?20:40

crimson_kinglinuxr_, or maybe you're installing the bootloader to the wrong device?20:54
linuxr_crimson_king, I think the bootloader is allright, when I manually select the drive in bios boot menu I can boot from it20:56
TJ-linuxr_: we see that with some Acer PCs with locked down firmware that is either specifically set to boot Windows, or needs to have boot loader files specifically trusted via it's Setup > Security > Trust options20:56
linuxr_TJ-, yes it's actually an Acer device. What file would I need to specifically trust?20:57
TJ-linuxr_: Usually they're using the Insyde H2O UEFI firmware, but there seem to be some others too. Enter firmware setup, there should be a "Security" page. If not enabled, enable Secure Boot. There should be a section there for "Trust" where it provides a file-browser, Use that to locate the Ubuntu/GRUB /EFI/ubuntu/shimx64.efi and /EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi and mark them both trusted. Once that is done you can,21:01
TJ-if you prefer, disable Secure Boot again. After doing that Ubuntu should show up as a boot option (if it was installed in UEFI mode).21:01
R13oseAny other thoughts on my question?21:07
TJ-R13ose: how is the keyboard connected?21:09
R13oseLaptop21:09
linuxr_TJ-, I found that menu and "trusted" these two files, but this doesnt seem to have any effect?21:09
linuxr_there's also two other files: fwupx64.efi and mmx64.efi...what's the point of these?21:10
TJ-linuxr_: if there is not an Ubuntu menu entry in the firmware's boot menu you'll need to a do a LiveISO UEFI boot, chroot-mount the install, and run grub-install/efibootmgr to add an entry21:11
TJ-linuxr_: ahhh, the fwupx64.efi is the firmware updater (it can update system firmware if the correct files are provided by Acer)21:11
R13oseTJ-: ^21:12
TJ-linuxr_: I think mmx is the memtest for UEFI systems21:12
TJ-R13ose: I asked how the keyboard is connected... PS/2, USB, SDIO, Bluetooth ?21:13
Sven_vBR13ose, maybe one part of the solution: the "xev" program can tell you the keycode of keys pressed. xinput --list can show you device IDs of your connected keyboards. xinput --float can exclude input device's signals from normal processing. (make sure to establish remote shell first.)21:13
* Sven_vB guesses R13ose means "my laptop's built in keyboard and I didn't look beneath"21:14
R13oseTJ-: this is connected to the laptop.  Not external keyboard21:14
linuxr_I TJ- thanks, I', going crazy about that stuff...why doesn't ubuntu installer add this entry into boot menu?21:14
Sven_vBlinuxr_, have you checked the BIOS whether there's some setting that toggles between UEFI and legacy boot?21:17
TJ-R13ose: use this command to find out where the keyboard is and pastebin the results: "for n in /sys/class/input/*; do [ -f $n/name ] && echo $n=$(cat $n/name); done "21:17
TJ-linuxr_: it tries to but the firmware blocks it if the files aren't manually trusted by the user21:18
TJ-linuxr_: These are devices designed for and only targeted at Windows; the makers deliberately make non standard extensions to the firmware to make it difficult21:18
akem_Hey, i would like to reduce the default desktop gnome font size on Ubuntu 17.10, is there a simple way to configure this? (i found this method https://nixaid.com/hidpi-display-on-ubuntu-17-10-and-font-size/ but didn't test yet)21:19

R13oseTJ-: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/b5hDZg8qsb/21:24
R13oseTJ-: anything else?21:29
TJ-R13ose: good news, there may be a known fix. That serio device tells us the keyboard is connected using the orginal IBM PS/2 style interface, using an i8042 chip. Those chips can support more than 1 device (like a Mouse and another called Aux). Sometimes the i8042 can generate spurious signals. There is a kernel commmand-line option we can try that after a reboot might solve it.21:35
R13oseTJ-: nice, let's try21:35
linuxr_TJ-, do you happen to know how to use efibootmgr to add these entries?21:35
=== murphysl_ is now known as murphyslawbbs
TJ-R13ose: can you show me "pastebinit <( dmesg )" so I can figure which option is most likely to help21:39
TJ-linuxr_: hang on, let me just check, I used it a few days ago but can't remember the exact syntax21:39
R13oseTJ-: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/2gPPdtJc7B/21:42
TJ-linuxr_: right, if you're inside the chroot of the broken system, just running "grub-install --verbose /dev/sdX" (where X is the device) will automatically call efibootmgr. With --verbose you'll see at the end efibootmgr doing it's job21:42
TJ-R13ose: line 566 onwards shows the i8042. It is finding an AUX device and a Mouse device; We need to check if that port is actually used by the laptop's trackpad, give me a  couple of minutes to read further21:43
linuxr_TJ-, can't I do this on the actual system?21:44
R13oseTJ-: sure21:44
linuxr_TJ-, I can boot from it (just not automatically when turning on the computer)21:44
TJ-linuxr_: yes you can, if it booted in UEFI mode21:46
TJ-linuxr_: if it's not automatic that's because it's not set as the default in the firmware's boot menu - the installer does try to set that so it may be the firmware is refusing to accept as the default21:46
TJ-R13ose: OK, so the laptop PC has an i8042 with has a PS/2 AT keyboard on serio0 (port 0) and a Synaptics touchpad on serio1 (port 1).21:47
R13oseTJ-: okay21:49
linuxr_TJ-, its booted in uefi mode. I wonder how I can set it as default, or at least see an output whether about the success of that operation21:50
R13oseTJ-: any clues on next steps?  I have to leave in 25 mins21:51
TJ-R13ose: I'm working on it21:52
R13oseTJ-: thanks21:52
akemIn Ubuntu 17.10 how can i scale Windows' title bars (I think it was System Settings > Displays > Scale in Ubuntu 16)21:55
TJ-R13ose: here's a command to add "i8042.nomux" to the kernel's boot-time commandline: " sudo sed -i -r 's/(GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=")/\1i8042.nomux /' /etc/default/grub "   -- after that do "sudo update-grub" and the reboot and test if it has improved, or made things worse.21:55
R13oseTJ-: does it happen if I use GNU or Ubuntu kernel for that command to work?21:56
TJ-R13ose: update-grub will add it to all standard menuentrys but not the Recovery options21:57
R13oseTJ-: trying21:57
TJ-R13ose: there are several posssible i8042.XXXX options; I think this is the most likely to help if any will, but can't be sure, so many need to test several21:58

R13oseTJ-: still happening22:06
TJ-R13ose: is the + being generated constantly or only in certain circumstances?22:06
R13oseTJ-: constantly whenever someone can type something but is stopping on and off22:07
TJ-R13ose: does it happen if you go into BIOS setup and find a text-entry that accepts + ?  Secondly, does it happen if you stop at the grub boot menu (tapping Esc or Shift to get the menu) and then press 'c' to go to the GRUB shell... this would indicate if the issue is caused by hardware or kernel22:08
R13oseTJ-: trying now22:09
TJ-R13ose: I'm assuming you've given the keyboard a very thorough clean? blown compressed air around the + key for example... the keys have little rubber dimples to create the springy feel and it's not unknown for those to get stuck in the 'pressed' position due to becoming sticky, or crumbs getting stuck around the key mechanism. On those keyboards you should be able to 'pop' the key-cap off and inspect the22:11
TJ-mechanism and clean it22:11
R13oseTJ-: I took the keys off and cleaned them22:11
TJ-R13ose: Was that because of this problem?22:12
R13oseTJ-: yes.  I didn't see any +'s in bios or grub22:12
R13oseTJ-: could this be the kernel I am using?22:13
TJ-R13ose: OK, that highly suggests the problem is the i8042 then22:13
TJ-R13ose: yes, of course it 'could' - should always try alternatives in these kind of situations to try to narrow down the scope of the problem.22:14
R13oseTJ-: I am having to go in 9 mins max22:14
TJ-R13ose: OK, well looks like there's plenty of alternative testing you can do to try to isolate it22:15
R13oseTJ-: let's do it22:15
R13oseTJ-: should I switch back to Ubuntu kernel and test that?22:16
TJ-R13ose: Yes, certainly22:18
R13oseTJ-: tell me how and I will do that.  I have 5 mins22:18

R13oseTJ-: yes and trying now22:20
TJ-R13ose: it does feel like many i8042 chip issues I've seen, albeit they were mostly 10 or more years ago!22:21
TJ-R13ose: now you know where to focus though, so you can pick up on trying alternative i8042.XXXX options another time, and other people who know the kernel command-line options can help you too22:22
R13oseTJ-: thanks.  Can you email what to ask people if I pm you my email address?22:23
TJ-R13ose: all you need is the i8042.XXXX options described here: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.html22:24
R13oseTJ-: thanks.22:24
TJ-R13ose: some are obviously not going to help - .nokbd for example disables the keyboard! .noaux would disable the mouse!22:24
R13oseTJ-: still having issues22:25
R13oseTJ-: can I ask you later when both of us are online again?22:25
TJ-R13ose: so you can either add the option manually once at the grub boot menu, or edit the /etc/default/grub file's GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= text each time and then do "sudo update-grub" to set that option before rebooting to test it22:25

clincksHi, I fixed my IP address. Now I'm not able to do apt-get command. Not find server. Any idea ? Thanks23:39
clincksErr:1 http://lu.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64 dpkg amd64 1.18.4ubuntu1.423:42
clincksTemporary failure resolving 'lu.archive.ubuntu.com'23:42
MrKeunerhi, is there a way to keep only the latest and previous kernels and no more?23:43
MrKeunerI mean automating that23:44
MrKeunerwhen I do not manually remove them my /boot partition gets filled every now and then23:44
clincksI think it is a DNS is issue... tried without success: echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null23:46
TJ-MrKeuner: that should already happen via /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal23:47
rdhclincks, what do you mean you fixed your IP?23:47
clincksI assign static IP23:48
Bashing-omMrKeuner: Use the unattended-upgrades package to regularly run autoremove for you. Edit the autoremove setting in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades from 'false' to 'true'23:48
rdhclincks, http://www.sudo-juice.com/how-to-set-a-static-ip-in-ubuntu-network-confirguration/23:48
rdhclincks, you'll have to make sure you set whatever DNS you want... etc.23:49
rdhclincks, what was the reason for static ip?23:50
Bashing-omMrKeuner: Unattended-updates is triggered by a daily cronjob: /etc/cron.daily/apt-compat .23:50
clincksIt is a server, I want to have fix address23:51
MrKeunerBashing-om, TJ- thanks23:51
rdhI'd use my router settings to assign an IP address to the servers MAC, so you can just leave it default.23:52
Bashing-omMrKeuner: But, as TJ- advises. later releases autoremove is the default .23:52
clincksThat link is more for a ubuntu client... lot of things related to graphical UI. I don't have that...23:54
rdhGUI? it's settings in interface file23:55
clincksServer is running in a virtual machine on my laptop...23:55
clincksand I forced setting of the VM that guest OS has is own IP on the network (need it for different reasons).23:56
TJ- MrKeuner actually, you need to edit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades and  remove the // comment prefix from '//Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Kernel-Packages "false"  ' and change false to true23:56
rdhclincks, so it will have its own virtual network card seen as another computer23:57
clincksrdh, yes I think so. But when assign static address within ubuntu... something goes wrong23:58
MrKeunerTJ-, appears like // has to stay23:58
GeoHi - In my GUI, I seem to recall there being someway I can have up to 4 different 'desktop' screens by using some hot keys to switch between them... does what I'm trying to say sound familiar to anyone and, if so, how?23:58
akikclincks: you can set the nameservers in the interfaces file with "dns-nameservers"23:59
rdhclincks, the link i sent you shows you how to set up a static ip, your netmask, gateway, iface, and broadcast will probably different. but you will need to know them23:59
