savageoneit's at home00:00
savageonei got no internet there00:00
savageoneI'm in my office about to go there haha00:00
savageoneI'm a mile from my house00:00
savageonelemme ask you this, what will i get inr escue mode?00:00
savageoneinternet support?00:00
savageoneapt-get support?00:00
savageonecan Ir emove packages in there00:00
NeoFaxsavageone: You will need a internet connection or your apt setup with CD capability00:00
drbobbgreg: type : printenv http_proxy00:00
drbobbat the command line00:00
drbobbwhat do you get?00:00
savageoneneo: will I have network access while in rescue mode, chosen from grub00:01
savageonealso, what is the linux restricted module thing there, I apt-get'd that and immediately after this happened00:01
gregdrbobb: http://username:password@franc.cc.strath.ac.uk:808000:02
NeoFaxOnce you are in and apt is setup as CD, do sudo apt-cache search nvidia.  Then do sudo apt-get install (now here you will type the nvidia-newest-driver).  This will install the drivers for the nvidia 100.14.19 set.  After that, do sudo init 3 and then sudo init 5.  You should have a perfect X setup00:02
gregdrbobb: That would be the problem, how do I go about resetting that ?00:02
NeoFaxsavageone: No.  rescuer mode is exactly that.  The bare minimum to rescue a system00:03
savageoneneo:  can I do apt-get remove xxx though that wouldn't require internet right?00:03
savageoneUI don't have a live cd00:04
savageonethis is sort of an appliance type distro, all on a dvd, no live boot00:04
drbobbgreg: yes that's it. You certainly don't want it anymore00:04
drbobblook in .bash_profile and .bashrc in your home dir00:05
gregdrbobb: Will do.00:05
drbobbthere has to be a line like http_proxy=...00:05
drbobbor export http_proxy=..00:05
drbobbcomment it out by putting a hash (#) in front00:06
NeoFaxsavageone: Yes, you can do that, but you will need to install the vanilla nv driver.  It should be like xorg-server-nv or something like that.  Then do sudo dpkg-reconfigure xorg and it should ask to setup your xorg.conf file which you should do.  Or you can manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change nvidia to nv00:06
savageonethe xorg says nv!00:07
gregdrbobb: Will do, just finding it.00:07
savageoneI was told to try changing it to:  nvidia00:07
A|i3Nquestion: Downloading kubuntu 7.10 - I have a vista system - is there a way to dual boot without having to erase my current o/s first?00:07
savageonek neofax00:07
savageoneI'm off to give it a go00:07
NeoFaxsavageone: And you get a split screen?00:08
drbobblog out and log back in before it takes effect00:08
soulrider!nvidia00:08
ubotuTo install the Ati/NVidia drivers for your video card, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto00:08
savageoneneo: I DID get split screen, not I just get a splash screen for kubuntu that has a progress bar that goes about 1 inch and stops00:08
savageoneI also think I shouldn't have installed the linux restricted modules thing, do you know what that is?00:08
NeoFaxsavageone: Did you check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see exactly what the problem is?00:09
savageonenope00:09
savageonebut I'm taking notes on what to try since I don't have internet there atm because it's my router, and I'm going to check that00:09
savageoneanything specific I should look for?00:09
savageonemaybe it's related to this restricted modules thing00:09
NeoFaxsavageone: It is ubuntu's way of allowing restricted drivers to be installed, but not be held legally responsible.00:09
savageoneanyone know what the hellt hat is?00:09
savageonefuck00:10
savageonethat's proably what happened00:10
savageonerestricted drivers as in nvidia drivers?00:10
savageoneor is that a pretty mundane thingand probably not my issue00:10
savageoneyou'd think linux would load at least but it doesn't00:10
savageonethen maybe give me a command prompt and an x error00:10
NeoFaxsavageone: It is the ubuntu way.  Thousands use it every day with no problem.  I am assuming it is not NVIDIA related and something else entirely.  In the Xorg.0.log look for lines that begin with EE.00:11
savageonewhere is that Xorg.0.log file?00:11
NeoFaxsavageone: restricted drivers as in proprietary and not open sourced.00:11
NeoFaxIt is in /var/log00:11
NeoFaxYou new to linux?00:11

savageoneI've been using it for 10 years00:12

peterbecker_how do I stop knetworkmanager from connecting to networks I don't want it to connect to?00:12
savageonebecause 99.9 percent of what I do doesn't require it00:12
savageoneand I use a lot of pussy-linux stuff like ipcop, etc00:12
savageoneso I don'thave to think much00:12
savageone;)00:12
peterbecker_it is currently annoying the h^&$* out of me by reconnecting to some "default" WLAN all the time00:13
savageonebut I learn by making mistakes like everyone else00:13
peterbecker_which means all my connections break00:13

maybeway36i'll say that01:23
NeoFaxflaccid: Checkout appupdater it is apt for windows01:23

tehm0nkhow do i get the mouse to do Back Forward?01:47
tehm0nkwithout Binding it to ALT+left/Alt-right?01:48
flaccidkonversation does fine at least for most users01:48
tehm0nki was going to install a game on here and i was Hoping it would see the buttons as normal...01:48
nosrednaekimetfb: konversating?01:49
etfbflaccid: How do you set it to wordwrap?  If I type a really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really long line, it doesn't wrap (or at least it didn't when I tried before - I'll be embarrassed if it does now).01:49
etfbflaccid: Hmmm... never mind, it's working now.  Weird.01:50
tehm0nkis there a gui type mouse button binder?01:50
etfbflaccid: OK, I just need to figure out how to get it to stop with all the "[nick] has joined this channel" messages, and I'll be happy.01:50
nosrednaekimetfb: wraps for me01:51
nosrednaekimetfb: thats a setting in settings->configure konversation->chat window->hid part/join events01:51
etfbnosrednaekim: Yep, me too, now.  I was SURE it didn't before.01:51
nosrednaekimetfb: it doesn't if it doesn't have a space in between, or is a link01:52
etfbnosrednaekim: I don't have that option, and I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest version.01:52
* etfb checks his version number01:53
* etfb is using Konversation v1.0.101:53
adz21ceftb: settings->configure konversation->behaviour->chat window->hide part/join/nick events01:53
NeoFaxetfb: Why not create an ignore pattern if you don't have that setting?01:53
adz21ctheres 2 chat windows in the config dialog01:54
adz21ccaught me out01:54
etfbadz21c: Me too - what a stupid error for the designers to make.  Ah well; fixed now.  Thanks, all!01:54
etfbHey, can someone /part and re/join the channel, just so I can be sure it's working?  Paranoid, I know...01:55
adz21cetfb: just did01:56
etfbExcellent.  Thank you!01:56
adz21cnp01:56
flaccidetfb: sorry mate was afk. um check options. how did you go01:57
flaccidah you already helped sweet as01:57
etfbI guess I can shoot Chatzilla through the head and dump its body in a shallow grave then.  Konversation will do nicely.  Thanks to you too, flaccid.01:57
etfbNow for something completely different...01:58
flaccidcool01:58
etfbHas anyone tried installing PHP4 (not 5) in Gutsy?  I'd like to do it via apt, but it's not in the repositories.  Any hints?01:58

flacciduse .flaccid instead they are cooler01:59
DragnslcrHehe01:59
etfbflaccid: Trouble is that it's not covered by the auto-update then.  Also, I'm confused about the non-standard way Ubuntu installs Apache.01:59
etfbIs there a web page with Ubuntu-specific Apache info, stuff about how to configure it from source to match the standard install?02:00
etfbHmmm... maybe our robotic friend knows...02:00
etfb!apache02:00
flaccidetfb: well if its not in a repos, then yeah it will be manual update. the implementation of apache in debian/ubuntu sux. i hate it and agree.02:00
ubotuLAMP is an acronym for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process (different in Edgy+)02:00
tehm0nk!compiz02:01
ubotuKubuntu is not shipping with compiz installed or enabled by default. You can still install it and have your eyecandy goodness. The instructions are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion - further help in #compiz-fusion02:01
etfbflaccid: I was hoping it was in a Feisty or Edgy repos, and I could get at it from there.  Might be too much trouble though.02:01
flaccidthere kind of is no standard apache install. if you want normal httpd.conf and none of the rest, re-do it or don't use the apache in repos - install manual/compile02:01
flaccidetfb: then it would have different deps which probably would not work02:02
etfbflaccid: You're probably right02:02
* etfb sighs resignedly02:02
flaccidyeah unfortunately i do this for a living lol. i use freebsd for web servers :)02:02
etfbflaccid: Ah yes, BSD... for people who hate that Gentoo is too mainstream now...02:03
etfbflaccid: I bet you won't listen to any band that's popular enough to be played on JJJ, right?02:03
* etfb ducks and runs02:04
flaccidlol, nah us bsd people don't get caught up in the bs. and yeah bsd kernel not linux kernel02:04
flaccidwell my nickname is actually from a band frequently played on jjj - grinspoon.02:04
tehm0nkdoes Compiz Get along with Xinerama?02:05
etfbflaccid: Ah well, I might to a complete Apache install via apt, figure out where it puts things, then remove and redo it from sources to steal all the good ideas and dump the rest.02:05
flaccidtehm0nk: usually if you have enough vram.02:05
etfbflaccid: Hours of time-wasting ahoy!02:05
tehm0nkflaccid: i just tryied to enable it and my windows got all jacked up02:05
etfbLunchtime and battery nearly depleted. Must go.  Bye all.02:05

bazhangawag: you want to transfer music to your ipod from amarok?02:51
awagbazhang: yeah, and amarok was autodetecting my ipod, and letting me do whatever until today02:51
bazhangawag: you need to first open amarok, then connect your ipod--it will autodetect it once that happens02:52
awagbazhang: today I had a problem after i used a program (windows program mediamonkey i thin) on my friend's computer to try and upload some songs02:52
tehm0nk!xrandr02:52

tehm0nkBut MOST of what i have been reading on it.... is for 1 videocard which... if i set mine up that way02:54
tehm0nki'll have 1 screen.02:54
bazhangawag: so you want to transfer newer music to it? be sure amarok is open then connect it--if it is already connected it will likely not work02:54
jamster545hello02:54
bazhangdo you have a question jamster545?02:55
jamster545yeah. how do i install a program from a .deb package?\02:55
bazhangjamster545: which program?02:55
ardchoillejamster545: Which app?02:55
jamster545AVG free edition02:56
jamster545hello?02:57
tehm0nkXlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".02:57

flaccidmaybe you are right tehm0nk02:57
jamster545no i am not02:57
awagbazhang: not working :( when i did it exactly like this yesterday, it came right up02:57
ardchoillejamster545: You don't really need anti vuris for Linux02:57
ardchoille*virus02:58
jamster545i need AVG installed because my school IT person said that in order for me to be allowed to connect to my home machine as a proxy i would need antivirus02:58
tehm0nkwith Xrandr does it have a menu across both screens or just 1?02:58
flaccidtehm0nk: does only 1 card come up in xrandr -q or both?02:58
tehm0nkXlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".02:58
tehm0nkthat comes up...02:58
flaccidjamster545: is this on windows or linux?02:58
ardchoillejamster545: Does this IT person know you run Linux?02:58
bazhangawag: I have had that issue; quit amarok be sure your ipod is disconnected, restart amarok, then reconnect the ipod--closing the amarok window does not quit it by the way--be sure it is truly closed02:59
flaccidtehm0nk: i would google that. which version of ubuntu is this02:59
jamster545yeah, but i stil want it because it is shared linux/windows machine so if something gets on the windows part it could migrate and transmit itsself02:59
tehm0nkkubuntu, 10.something02:59
sat_i moved from xp to kubuntu. no issues of virus/adware. performance is much better.02:59
gregJamster545: You've got AVG installed *wink* *wink*..02:59
bazhangjamster545: thinkof kubuntu as AVG on steroids03:00

sat_ardchoille: thanks for the link. useful info.03:03
Downix_SPARCjamster545: you do dpkg -i *deb)03:03
ardchoillesat_: yw03:03
jamster545i did and it opened Ark03:03
flaccidjamster545: probably for commercial purposes03:03

Downix_SPARCjamster545: Incidentally, Sun doessn't have a micro.  I think you're considering the SPARC, which is an open standard CPU produced by Fujitsu, Texas Instruments, and Geisler03:05
awagbazhang: ok i did that a few times, still not working, can you tell me what you have as your pre-connect command and post-disconnect command in amarok?03:06
Downix_SPARCI love my new TI SPARC03:06
flaccidfeel free to send me a sparc03:06
awagbazhang: i tried doing various mount and umount things that i found online for that.. not sure if this is the problem or not03:07
awaglast time it just autodetected03:07
bazhangawag: you need to be sure that amarok is really and truly quit--it will leave an applet in the menu panel when you close the window--you need to right click--quit on that; then restart amarok--go to devices (left side panel of interface window, connect ipod via usb--the autodetect mechanism should then pick it up--not the kubuntu usb detection (another separate window), but the one within that devices panel03:10
flaccidcan also do a killall amarokapp03:10
flaccidthen check ps aux | grep amarok to see any childs/scripts left over03:10
tehm0nkok03:11
tehm0nkxinerama is off now03:11
awagbazhang: ok i've been truly quiting amarok, but i've only been just unplugging my ipod from the cable, not the cable from the usb port, i'll try that03:11
Downix_SPARCflaccid: You can pick up an Ultra 10 for cheap.03:11

nickv111Hello, all. I just installed Gutsy on my computer. One of my goals was to get Compiz working. Anyway, after a lot of trouble, I got Xgl and Compiz working. However, the "cube" effect doesn't quite work the way I want it to. Instead of a cube, I have a piece of paper, with two desktops. Increasing the number of desktops I have doesn't help; if I have four desktops, 1 and 3 are just one side of the sheet of paper, and 2 and 4 are the05:43

xt828when i give the location of the share, i'm specifying it as it is shared in windows, right?06:49

flaccidyou use //server06:49

flaccidi mean //server/share06:49
flaccidif you can't ping server it probably won't work because you would need to set up NetBT06:50
xt828but so if on the windows pc i have d:\videos shared as videos, i'd mount //winmachine/vidoes06:50
flaccidyes as long as winmachine is resolvable by dns eg. try ping winmachine on the ubuntu machine if it doesn't work you need to use IPs or setup DNS or NetBT06:51

intelikeyhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=350813 <<< talks about the ctrl+alt+bs   but also says that it's not for ctrl+shift+bs10:46
intelikeyand i just tested xorg,   ctrl+shift+bs   is not recognized by x   so it has to be a kde hotkey10:47
intelikeys/recognized/captured/10:47
intelikeyromunov what i'm saying is that you need to look closely at those instructions   they are not for    ctrl+shift+bs   but rather for  ctrl+alt+bs   which is an xorg hotkey   and not controled by kde10:49

Downixtrying to find out which nvidia one covers what14:50
DownixI have nvidia-glx for mine, but it's a 610014:50
GSF1200S_yeah, glx-new here and im on a 760014:51
gpi am on Nvidia gforce 8400M14:51
gpi think before update i was running nvidia-glx but now on nvidia-glx-new14:52
Downixok, glx will work14:53
Downixglx-new has some issues I'm reading14:53
gpso i will revert back to glx14:53
Downixok!14:54
Downix*grumbles* We need another GPU vendor!14:54
Downixtwo is not enough!14:54
gpi will be back after the reboot;-)14:55
GSF1200S_itd be awesome if we could get some OSH14:55
GSF1200S_open source hardware14:55
LynoureGSF1200S_: there is, already...14:55
GSF1200S_really14:55
DownixLynoure: Nothing complete at this time.  OpenGraphics is nowhere near being even a 1988 VGA controller yet.14:56
LynoureDownix: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_hardware#Computers_and_Computer_Components14:56
DownixGSF1200S_: I'm pondering opening up my own design ideas, but trying to sort out patent issues.14:56
GSF1200S_cool... itd be awesome to open the ideas and have everyone have access to develop it14:57
DownixLynoure: plenty of CPU's, no GPU's in that list tho.  I have most of the tools.14:57
GSF1200S_then, simply sell them at a cost that covers cost, you know?14:57
DownixGSF1200S_: the issue I have is in patents, I based my design on an older one, and need to be sure everything is on the up and up14:57
LynoureDownix: No, did not claim there was, just that there is open source hardware already14:57
DownixLynoure: Plenty of it, I work with the Leon SPARC for my own projects, beautiful chip14:58
Downixwas one of the core members of F-CPU for a few years14:58
DownixLynoure: but no GPU at this time, sad to say15:00
LynoureDownix: unfortunately I don't have the skills to fix that.15:01
tzdActionParsnip: my FF theme syndrome was due to the KDE desktop setting... you were right ofc ;) Thanks mate!15:02
romunovis the httpd.conf (apache2) file suppose to have only one line "ServerName localhost"?15:02
DownixLynoure: Most of what's needed is input, honestly.  People say "oh, I want a GPU" then can't actually express what they need it to do.15:03
DownixLynoure: Example, my own (now 10 years under development) design.  It's technically complete, but design wise uninspiring.15:03
Lynoureromunov: pastebin your config, if you have trouble with it, makes it easier to troubleshoot15:04
romunovwell that's it15:05
romunovthere's nothing to pastebin15:05
romunovServerName localhost is everything there is in that file15:05
romunovi've searched my /etc/apache2 directory for my IP and changed all 3 files that i found to "localhost"15:08
romunovip -> localhost15:08
romunovwhen i go to localhost and click on a directory, it still wants to go to my ip15:09
romunovi've restarted the server inbetween15:09
romunovperhaps my router is causing trouble15:09
Dr_williswell if its going to localhost, 127.0.0.1 - Then it shouldent even be going out to the router.15:10
Dr_willisbut im not an apache expert.15:10
benjaminhi, what I have to to if kde is not starting automaticly. I have to start it manualy with "startx"15:10
Dr_willisbenjamin,  sounds like kdm or gdm is not starting. you could try a 'dpkg-reconfigure kdm' for a start.15:10
Dr_willisthen try a 'sudo kdm'15:10
Lynoureromunov: sounds more like your hosts file having something wronig with it.15:10
Lynoures/wronig/wrong15:11
benjaminDr_willis: oky thanks I try15:11
Dr_willisif kdm works that way. well it would seem that the kdm service is not getting loaded at boot.15:11
romunovLynoure: what do you suggest i do?15:11
BluesKajHowdy all  : )15:11
Lynoureromunov: I would not suggest anything without seeing the  /etc/hosts  or/and apache configs...15:12
LynoureI don't like working blind when there is no reason for it :)15:12
romunovlemme see if there's anything in the /etc/hosts15:13
romunovhum, i don't have "/etc/hosts"15:14
romunovoops, i do15:14
romunovit's not a directory but a file15:14
romunov<- newb15:14
Lynoureromunov: it's normally a file.  Try  less /etc/hosts15:15
romunovi find kate or nano quite handy15:15
romunovthis is the /etc/hosts15:15
romunovhttp://pastebin.com/d5fa92aff15:15
Lynoureromunov: whichever you prefer. :)15:15
romunovi use nano for "simple" edits and kate for root changes15:16
Lynoureromunov: no edit needed, looked fine15:17
erickhi15:18
romunovlemme see if there's anything in the apache2.conf15:18
romunovhum, nothing special15:19
NetSKaVeNhell-o!15:25
Dr_willisso when you go to http://localhost/  - it changes to http://Your.ip.address  ?15:26
Dr_willisIm not sure that having 127.0.0.1 for both Localhost and your machinename is proper. but im, behind a router here.. so my machine ip is a local lan ip.15:27
NetSKaVeNanyone with Kubuntu Gutsy 64 bits?15:27
NetSKaVeNI can't locate java plugin15:27
GSF1200S_blackdown java15:27
NetSKaVeNI need java 615:28
shadowhywinddoes anyone know of a way to Nuke/wipe a usb harddrive?15:29
llutzshadowhywind: shred15:29
romunovDr_willis: when i go to localhost i can see the directory structure, but when i click on the directory (my page), it wants to go to my IP15:29
shadowhywindllutz will that work on the entire harddrive or just on files?15:30
llutzshadowhywind: on entire disks too15:30
Dr_willisromunov,  Hmm.. well its working here if i go to http://localhost/mythweb/   it seems to be using 127.0.0.115:30
BluesKajshadowhywind, delete the files then reformat , some drives will reformat to nyfs then back to fat32 or 1615:30
llutzshadowhywind: i just did it a few days ago :)15:30
BluesKajntfs15:30
shadowhywindok thanks i will try that out. I wanted to use the Boot and Nuke CD but it don't work with usb harddrives15:32
laurentiuI' need help with this   "The APT Database could not be opened! This may be caused by incorrect APT configuration or some similar problem. Try running apt-setup and apt-get update in terminal and see if it helps to resolve the problem."   I'm beginer15:32
llutzshadowhywind: that's what i did (with a bit of paranoia):  shred -n6 -z -v /dev/sdb15:32
Dr_willislaurentiu,  did you try '15:32
llutzshadowhywind: that gives you time for a lot of coffee, gardening, etc15:32
Dr_willis'sudo apt-get update' like it suggested?15:32
laurentiutry15:33

romunovhot dang15:35
romunovctrl+shift+bs again15:35
llutz!pastebin | laurentiu15:35
ubotulaurentiu: pastebin is a service to post large texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (be sure to give the URL of your paste - see also the #kubuntu channel topic)15:35
shadowhywindllutz do you know what pattern it is using to wipe?15:36
llutzshadowhywind:  -n6 means 6 times with random-numbers, -z once with zero15:37
llutzshadowhywind: man shred for further info15:37
shadowhywindthanks15:37
Dr_willislaurentiu,  looke like  line 80 in /etc/apt/sources.list is incorrect15:39
=== jpatrick_ is now known as jpatrick
romunovok, under route i get 192.168.2.0, link-local and default destinations15:41
romunovgateway *, * and routerIP, respectively15:41
Lynourelooks normal.15:41
Lynoureromunov: The symptom was that when you type http://localhost you get to http://yourpublicip instead of localhost? It does sound like apache binds to the public ip...15:42
romunovsolved!15:44
Lynoureromunov: do tell? :)
